Prestwick & District Dog Training Club

Prestwick & District Dog Training Club A Kennel Club registered dog training club who offer sessions in Agility, Obedience & Flyball. WHAT IS AGILITY? WHAT IS FLYBALL?

Dog agility is something akin to Badminton horse trials, without the hooves! Whilst a modest level of fitness is taken for granted one does not have to be a Linford Christie or Sally Gunnel to take part in this sport. The aim of the sport is to guide your dog through a series of obstacles within a course time. The skill levels involved range from good obedience control for Starter Agility through

to advanced commands at senior level. Opinion varies on the best way of training your dog for agility. Prestwick & District DTC uses motivational methods to encourage both handler and dog to achieve these aims. If the dog enjoys what it is doing it will want to learn more and the more a dog learns, the more it can learn. In general it is recognised that it takes about two years to train the dog and four or five years to train the handler! Flyball is a relay race with four dogs on a team. The course consists of a start/finish line, four hurdles spaced 10 feet apart, a box and a backboard. The first hurdle is 6 feet from the start/finish line and the box is 15 feet from the last hurdle. The backboard is placed 7 feet upwards behind the box. The dogs jump the hurdles and step on the spring loaded box that shoots out a tennis ball. The dog catches the ball and then returns over the 4 hurdles; when the dog crosses the start/finish line the next dog goes. The first team to have all 4 dogs run without errors wins the heat. Each heat consists of 2 teams in a knockout race.

Not long now... the closing date for Prestwick and District Dog Training Club's Agility Show is the 19th of May. We are delighted to be back at Rozelle Park, situated on the south side of Ayr. The Estate features the original 1760s Mansion House, The Maclaurin Art Gallery, Rozelle Tea Room, as well as Ponds, Woodland Walks, and on the 10th and 11th of June our Agility Show.
Thanks to South Ayrshire Council, we are able to host both our Agility and Obedience Shows in this beautiful venue in June. Not forgetting the local beaches, great for a cool down following a day of agility. 😍
The Rescue Agility Scotland Final will also take place on Saturday, 10th June, at the end of the show. Hope to see you there.

Prestwick and District DTC are holding a beginners agility class starting Tuesday 1st June 2021 at Auchincruive, hockey Pitches.

This will be a 12 week course and will cover all areas of agility. Dogs must be 10 months or older with a good level of fitness. Dogs must have good recall as will be working with other dogs. We have limited spaces for classes.

Additional to this we are also offering young dogs aged 5 months to 8 months, this will include prep for agility, puppy foundation, relationship building, core strengthening and lots more to prep for becoming a future agility dog. This will also be a 12 week course. This is limited to 6 dogs.

We are also hoping to have online support, so if anyone is having any issues or problems then we can work through them straight away.

Cost for each course will be £90 per handler and dog, which will be required to be paid prior to commencing course.

All enquiries or to book a space please TEXT... Carole Boyd on 07788951998.

Unfortunately we are unable to recommence our obedience training at the moment. We will contact the venue early August as requested to see if they are lifting their restrictions to allow us access. We have been considering outdoor training at Auchincruive, unfortunately the weather can be an issue, we would need to consider small groups (in line with government guidance) and potentially as a block booking for it to be viable. Sorry to disappoint, but if we are unable to introduce outdoor training we may have to wait until we are able to access the existing venue.

27/06/2020

Hi all, I think we (and our dogs) are all missing the various aspects of training, we are hoping to arrange a 'committee meeting' via digital technology, in the next week hopefully, to discuss how we can safely start back up the various disciplines. We are keen to get started, classes clearly will need to be looked at differently, so lots to discuss. As a Kennel Club registered club we also have to adhere to their guidance, alongside the Scottish Government's. Taking into account all the guidance and trainer/committee availability, as due to COVID-19, for some of us circumstances have changed, potentially affecting the contribution we can now make. We will post here once we have had discussions and look at ways to reintroduce our much missed training. Sorry no absolutes yet, but hopefully soon. Watch this space as they say. 🐾

⛔ Wednesday OBEDIENCE Cancelled ⛔
There will be NO OBEDIENCE classes, until further notice. This is in line with current government advice to slow the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).
The advice is that people should:
minimise social contact by avoiding crowded areas, large gatherings and smaller gatherings such as restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs, cinemas and gyms. Guidance attached.
https://www.gov.scot/news/people-advised-to-limit-social-contact/

Those most at risk strongly advised to reduce unnecessary contact.

⚠️Cancelled - Agility Show ⚠️
After careful consideration we regret to inform you that we have decided to cancel Prestwick and District's Agility show on the 6th and 7th of June. As a committee we feel it is the responsible thing to do for our members and public safety. It has not been a decision we have taken lightly, but considering the events that are currently unfolding around us, we feel it is the correct one. We hope you understand our decision, as disappointing as it is. We feel that keeping our community safe in these uncertain times is the right move. The next few months will be a massive learning curve for all of us, as we deal with whatever lies ahead. Agility people are very resilient. We need to look after each other and hopefully we can get back to doing what we love soon. Thank you for your continued support shown to the club over the years.
Kind regards
Prestwick and District Dog Training Club.

Hi Folks, you may or may not be aware, but our Large Agility Team (Prestwick Pawsabilities) won the SKC qualifier back in August, qualifying for Crufts in March 2020. This is a wonderful achievement for the team and the Club. We are now looking to raise funds to help the team. Our first venture is a raffle. We have '2 Festive Hampers' up for grabs, tickets are now available at £1.00 a strip; the raffle will be drawn on Monday the 16th of December. Not a lot of time for this so dont miss out. Tickets will be available at Agility, Flyball up until the draw and from Committee members, just post here/contact us if you would like to buy some and we will ensure you don't miss out, Thanks in advance for your support.
