This month will be our 7th webinar! We will be joined by several Equine Assisted Learning practitioners including Anne Brown (https://www.learninginharmonywithdonkeys.co.uk/), Dianne Jones and Amy Robinson (Clady Water Farm - Equine Learning Centre)

To show our appreciation and sympathy, we’ll start with a tribute to Simone McCambridge, who has recently passed, and her incredible work at Tullynewbank.

We’ll then hear from each of the practitioners about their backgrounds, particularly what drew them to the field of EAL, and the beneficial services they offer. While explaining some of the needs specific to NI that they come across in daily practice, we will explore the potential solutions and how we can address the growing needs moving forward.

What do we do at Clady Water Farm - Equine Learning Centre…….

We’ve been some super sunny sessions these last few weeks!!! ☀️🐴☀️🐴
Building obstacle courses and navigating our way through them to allow us to reflect on how we navigate the challenges that life brings our way!
This work never ceases to amaze me how the horses and ponies can help children and young people overcome some of the biggest trauma in their lives.

Equine-facilitated learning (EFL) is a hands-on learning approach that promotes the development of life skills through equine-assisted activities.

Horses don’t judge.

They can teach people so much about themselves

You don’t need any horsemanship skills to take part in equine therapy, just a willingness to engage.

For children and adults who like less talk, more action, equine therapy is a unique and powerful way to engage sensitively with another living creature that can offer insight into our own strengths, difficulties and negative survival patterns.

Equine therapy is growing in reputation and is successfully being used as an intervention to help children and adults to overcome the trauma of adverse childhood experiences.

While there are physical benefits to EFL, its focus is on the emotional and positive mental influence that spending time with horses has on your life. EFL is experiential, meaning you learn by “doing” and the horse is a facilitator, a living breathing being who helps to direct your session, making it a combination of education, therapy and fun.

You may wonder, why horses for mental health and not other animals?

Horses have been found to act similarly to humans in their social and responsive behavior. It’s easy for people to connect with the horse as they reflect many aspects of ourselves.

Just being near horses or stroking them can reduce stress and anxiety levels and increase a sense of wellbeing.

It doesn’t involve humans trying to imitate the way horses interact with one another. It’s a symbiotic and dynamic process that recognizes horses as sensitive, decision-making beings.

Finishing off a wonderful programme we’ve been running over the last number of weeks on friendship skills. 🐴🐴🐴This work has been amazing…. Grace, Dainty and Jamie have been superb in leading the way to teach the young people the friendship skills they need as they navigate their way through the world both at home, in the community and at school.

Today we were thinking about compliments, sharing compliments with the ponies and talking about how receiving compliments makes us feel. We concluded by thinking about all the skills we have learnt over the past number of weeks and what we can use going forward in the classroom, playground or at home!
I never cease to be amazed how powerful this work with the ponies can be.
The feedback from parents has been superb

The horses offer so much to each and every young person and adult that walks through our gates!

I often find those who have a lot of self-doubt often don't like themselves. It can help to gain a different perspective, help you to see your good qualities and feel better about who you are. Did you know that horses can reciprocate human emotions? Horses are sensitive non judgmental sentient beings.. They can help you discover your good qualities that perhaps you've forgotten.🐴❤️

The Register aims to bring together all people involved in the field of human equine interactions to ensure high quality service provision and create a greater awareness of their work.

The Register acts as a helpful resource for service users to make informed choices, service commissioners, funders, practitioners and anyone wishing to find out more about equine assisted or facilitated programmes in the UK.

Here you can search for individuals and organisations who provide equine assisted or facilitated therapies including: physical therapies; psychotherapy; education; learning; coaching and have demonstrated that they operate to high quality, safe and ethical practice standards.

Those on the Register have demonstrated that they have both human and equine welfare at the heart of what they do.

🐴 Pony time is the best part of the week!🐴

Working at liberty- without headcollars and lead ropes- gives the horses choice about how they engage and interact with EAL clients, while always having the freedom to move away as they wish.

Deano had no intention of going anywhere during this session, instead he stayed close offering connection and acceptance to his client 🥰 So wonderful to watch and facilitate!
