A Dealer’s View: Then vs. Now 30 years of change.

1995:

Horse riders actually rode horses. You fell off? Get back up, dust off the turf, and keep going.
No court cases in sight. If you bought a horse and couldn’t ride it, you either took some proper lessons or admitted you’d been “done” and moved on.

Cheap horses were "projects" — and everyone knew it. No one was trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

A good, schooled horse was a serious investment. If it was show-ready and jumping around 1.10m classes? You were looking at €5,000 or more—no question.

If someone took a horse to shows, they were putting serious effort into that animal. Respect was earned, not expected.

2025:

Horse riders? More like "passengers." Riding schools are closing down across the country because they’re terrified of getting sued.

Bought a horse you can’t ride? Just pop onto Facebook, slate the dealer, and boom, your reputation’s wrecked. Never mind you've had the horse for months and haven’t bothered to learn a thing.

Expecting €1,500-€2,000 should buy you a well-schooled, bombproof horse that can jump 1m+ and never have an ounce of cheekiness.

A project? Should be free—and even then, it better be “safe enough to take to the Dublin Horse Show without a problem.”

Dealers now have to turn horses into emotionless, mindless machines to get them accepted into the market. A horse with any personality? Nope, not in today’s world.

Sleepless nights are a given, knowing that even after all the work you’ve put into a horse, the slightest issue could lead to your business getting ripped apart.

The blood, sweat, and tears spent making these horses “perfect” often results in barely breaking even. Heartbreaking doesn’t even cover it.
How did we get here?

It's like the horse world has gone from “wild and free” to “sterile and soulless.”

You can’t even breathe in a horse’s direction without someone throwing a tantrum about safety or “issues.”

Dealers are stuck in a never-ending cycle of trying to make horses perfect—only for it to blow up in their faces when reality doesn’t match Facebook expectations.

The truth: The horse scene has shifted from being a tough, no-nonsense community to a place where everything’s about perfect appearances, and God forbid your horse has any personality or moments of “fun.”

Yes, there are dodgy dealers out there.

But let’s be real, there’s always a few bad apples in any barrel. The key is doing your research. Ask around, get recommendations, and don’t just take the first horse that comes along.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. But don’t blame the good dealers when the rogue ones give the whole industry a bad name.

A bit of effort on your part can save you a lot of headaches—and you won’t be one of those people whinging online about how “someone sold you a horse that’s a bit lively.”

It’s time for a change.

05/01/2025

Take a field full of young horses—doesn’t matter the breed or sport—and you’ll quickly see the harsh reality. Some will get hurt or die before they even have a chance to prove themselves. Some will be bought and rushed by people who don’t know what they’re doing, or worse, who “do”know but can’t resist cutting corners. Some will be started by hot-headed, short-fused riders who can’t handle the pressure. And only a small handful will ever get the chance to become well-trained by calm, patient, and skilled hands.

In short: there are far more potentially great young horses out there than there are people who actually know how to bring them along with the skill, the patience, and—let’s be real—“the temperament”to make it happen.

And the worst part? It’s usually the horse that gets blamed for the mistakes humans make.

And let’s not forget: the people who don’t know what they don’t know are the hardest to reach. And that? That’s a real problem.
