Equine Road Safety is so important to me. I don’t live near any off road riding and so I have to hack out with my daughter on roads with vehicles that are much bigger and more powerful than ever. In my experience It’s so variable how people drive near horses, 90% are great and slow down but about 10% have no clue🙈 Please pass wide and slow (15 MPH) which basically means taking your foot off the accelerator for about 30 seconds so we can all get on with our day safe and sounds. If you agree please sign and share this petition to give more legal protection to horses on our roads. Thanks xx

Back from my trip to Chateaubourg, Brittany, visiting the headquarters of HDE (Horse Dentistry Equipment). It was great meeting the incredible team behind the scenes and I’m really excited to be continuing my role as Veterinary Ambassador in 2024.

After an incredible year spent in Connecticut with my family, I am now back on home soil! Thank you for all the messages, they were so appreciated and encouraging. I have really missed my work and my lovely clients, you are such a dedicated group of horse owners with incredible commitment to the wellbeing of your horses. Unfortunately, over the last number of years, my neck and shoulder have been causing me ever increasing amount of pain. Despite the best efforts of my talented physio Nathan Lemon at Loughbrickland Clinic, it was prolonged rest that made the biggest difference. It is for that reason that I have made the really hard decision to step back from my clinical work. I will instead focus on supporting the incredible equine vets in Northern Ireland to provide high quality equine dentistry and continue to raise awareness of the importance of dental care for horses. I am still available to advise on dentistry matters and can be reached via FB Messenger or by email [email protected] Thank you for all your support for the future x

This was where we were this time last year, another entertaining day at the Donkey Sanctuary 😄 Donkeys definitely aren’t horses and over twenty years the fab Donkey Sanctuary staff have taught me a lot. Winter can be hard for donkeys, their coats don’t have waterproofing so keep them rugged and provide shelter for them please 🥰

🐴 One Year to the day since I saw my first case at Tullyraine Equine Clinic 🎂🥳 Huge thanks to Hugh Suffren, Inge D'haese and all the team for making me so welcome. Thank you to Kerri Greer who came on board last year and has been assisting me with all aspects of running the clinic. I wanted to share the news, well in advance, that I will be temporarily moving, along with my family, to the States in November for my husband’s work 🇺🇸 If you want to discuss any aspects of your horses ongoing dental care please feel to contact me in the coming months. I will be working closely with the team at Tullyraine along with our referring vets and EDTs to manage your dental cases in my absence. Many thanks for your support, Carolyn

A vet, an equine dental technician and a saddler walk into a yard…..

Nope it’s not a joke it’s what was happening at my house this afternoon! The horses were long overdue some dental maintenance and I had the lovely Manor Equine Vets Ltd and Equine Dental Services up to give them some top quality care!

Today was a good reminder on “picking your team”. As horse owners you are the one to choose the farrier, the vet, the trainer- so many people to keep your equine athlete happy and healthy! But the dilemma arises- who do you pick!

My advice always starts with Qualified and Registered- never feel embarrassed to ask someone for their qualifications as lots of us love whipping out the old certificates!

Check out how those qualifications are awarded (not just a participation trophy) and by what governing bodies too (no self awarded prizes here)! Take a look at their registration body too- this is a great example of a professional who’s keeping up the their CPD- never use someone who isn’t striving to better understand their field and as a result, give the best care to your horse.

Ask other professionals who you trust! A good vet will encourage you to use a good dental technician for example! Birds of a feather flock together so when you start using someone of a high standard they will point you in the right direction!

As they say teamwork makes the dream work! Never feel afraid to question your pros on the how what where and why- most of us love sharing our passions- in fact getting us to stop talking might be the real trick!

So now I’m off to check the boys and get some more work done. If you’re off competing this weekend Good Luck and we’ll keep the fingers crossed the weather holds out for you. And because I always love to finish off with a nice quote here’s one for the weekend 😉

“If you want to go fast go alone- if you want to go go far, go together”.

A chance to see an unerupted or ‘blind’ wolf tooth revealed! The wolf teeth are situated in front of the first upper cheek teeth but if they remain under the gum ‘blind’ they cause pain when they are in contact with the bit. This is one I extracted this week. The incision to remove it is less than 1cm and heals within 3 days but must be done under sedation with infiltration of local anaesthetic (veterinary only procedure). This one conveniently had a little ligament which meant I could photograph it on the exterior to show why these don’t erupt due to insufficient downward pressure through the gum/gingiva.

🐴 Long but rewarding day 🦷 🐴 This was my third extraction case of the day. Referred in by Equine Dental Services this 406 from a 6 year old horse had a large medial cavity draining into the oral cavity. Could have done without the fractured rostral root 😅 but MTE approach got the job done for this lovely patient 😉👍 (permission granted to share)
