We have been very busy today! We had temporarily sold out of our Cotswold Sweet Hay. Fortunately we have had all hands on deck to get the orders packed and more hay freshly baled and back in stock! Donโt forget you can get 50% off our 4kg Hay bales until Friday 23:59 as a part of our Bale Friday deal ๐ฑ
On Friday, Leigh drilled 22 acres of Winter Wheat at the Little Hay Co. Why do we drill wheat when we donโt make hay from it?
If we want to change grass species in a field, we need to ensure the previous species does not grow in amongst the new species. In this case, we are swapping a Cotswold Sweet Hay species for a pure Timothy hay. But we need to stop the Cotswold Sweet Hay from re-growing in amongst the Timothy. And we do that by interrupting the grass growing cycle for 10 months by growing a Winter Wheat crop. Then we have a clean start for the new species, in this case Timothy. We drill the Winter Wheat as late as possible to fool the Cotswold Sweet Hay soil-borne historic seeds into thinking winter really is here, preventing them from germinating.
The seed drill you see is a Sky 4m Direct Drill. We use this seed drill as it does not need us to pre-cultivate the soil, preserving worms, carbon and historic soil structure. You will hear of these direct drills being preferred by those wishing to capture carbon in the soil and those wishing to practice Regenerative Agriculture - both are sound practices for the environment.
Let's keep Rabbit Awareness week going! Read this caption all about Rabbit space! Whether your rabbits live indoors or outdoors, the fundamentals of great rabbit housing are the same. The Rabbit Welfare Association of Fund recommends a minimum enclosure size for two bonded rabbits is 3m x 2m x 1m high and that your rabbits have access to their sleeping area, toilet area, and exercise area at all times.
Fundamentally, a rabbit hutch is not enough. Whether you have an indoor rabbit hutch, or outdoor, your rabbits need more space. There are lots of rabbit hutches for sale, however, itโs vital to make sure that whichever housing you choose, it meets the size requirements your rabbits need.
Munch, Munch, Munch! Did you know rabbit's teeth never stop growing? That's why they need to eat so much hay!
