We had a lovely evening yesterday welcoming colleagues from our veterinary community for the latest instalment of our nursing CPD series. πŸ™‚πŸ‘€πŸ‘©β€πŸ«

Katy, Charlie and Mala led a discussion on ophthalmic surgical nursing and anaesthetic considerations which was enjoyed by all! Thank you to them for their presentation and we will keep you up-to-date on upcoming free CPD evenings!

We have had an exciting week at Focus Referrals after Denzil, an African crested porcupine paid us a visit! πŸ‘

Denzil's owners, BCA Zoo, had noticed ongoing discomfort in his eyes. On careful examination under sedation, it was noted that Denzil could be suffering from an abnormal tear film which would be the cause of the corneal ulcers also found. Giving eye drops to a porcupine daily could pose some challenges despite the fact that Denzil is a friendly guy! BCA zoo are committed to doing their best and we will be hearing back on his progress.πŸ‘€

Fun facts; Denzil weighed an impressive 15kg (we were all quite shocked by his size!) and porcupines are part of the rodent family! 😊

Feel Good Friday πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Meet Agnes ❀🐱. This lovely girl came to Focus Referrals due to a persistent corneal ulcer (a crater in the outer clear surface of the eye) which was leading to the formation of a sequestrum (where pigment accumulates on the eye's surface). This is not only uncomfortable but could have led to loss of her eye.

Agnes received very careful microscopic surgery to remove the top layer of her cornea and remove the sequestrum in order to allow her eye to heal. Her owner reports that she has recovered really well, which we are thrilled to hear β˜ΊπŸ‘

Feel Good Friday πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

This week our vet James came to the end of his 3 year ophthalmology residency πŸ‘€. This is an intense training period that involves logging cases, analysing/writing papers, examining all sorts of animals' eyes (cows, horses, snakes to name a few), completing training placements and presenting cases. All alongside a full time job!

We are so proud of James and really pleased to have him staying on at Focus as a board eligible clinician. Here he is celebrating with Holly, a long term friend who returns every year for her check up ☺️ πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Meet Melting Heart, a majestic Maine C**n relaxing on his carrier at Focus Referrals! ❀🐱

Owing to lower lid entropion, where the hairs of the lower eyelids turn inwards and rub on the surface of the eyes, Melting Heart was in constant discomfort and had developed a corneal ulcer. Microscopic surgery to carefully adjust the eyelid positioning, successfully turned the hairs outwards relieving his suffering and enabling the cornea to heal (with the help of a protective contact lens)!

We are so pleased to hear that he is doing well and of course, remains as handsome as ever! πŸ‘β˜Ί

Meet Meggie 🐢❀️

Meggie came to Focus Referrals having developed cloudy eyes, having difficulty catching her ball and feeling like she needed to cling to her family's side. She had previously been diagnosed with diabetes which can lead to the rapid development of cataracts and loss of sight, with all the negative impacts on life that Meggie was experiencing.

We were so happy to be able to help Meggie with a cataract removal operation in both eyes that has restored her sight and with the ongoing dedicated care from her family at home, will hopefully allow many happy years of ball catching! πŸŽ‰πŸ‘β˜ΊοΈ

Feel Good Friday! πŸŽ‰

Meet Arlo. This lovely boy came to Focus Referrals due to sudden loss of sight having developed cataracts due to his diabetes. His diabetes was proving difficult to control but after working closely with his dedicated owner and referring vet, we were able to go ahead and operate to remove them!

The happy news is that Arlo is now a much happier boy! He has gained weight and is no longer having to follow walls to find his way. Such a lovely outcome. Well done Arlo! πŸ‘πŸΆπŸŽ‰
