One of our puppy classes graduated yesterday! We went out on an adventure in Llanfairfechan to practice calmly watching the world, walking nicely on the lead and recalling around distractions. Everyone did such a great job! Congratulations to our puppy graduates and their humans who have made a fantastic start in their training journey 🤩🐕

A few weeks ago we introduced Urban herding to some great herders! Did you know each herding breed has their own herding style?

Here are some examples of different herding breeds and what purpose they were bred for:

🐶 Welsh sheepdogs were bred to work more independently and move livestock over long distances. They don't tend to stare like the border collies, and use their voice a lot more.

🐶 Border collies were bred to keep the livestock together and bring it to specific spots. They will use intense staring to move the sheep where they need it to be but don't tend to use their voice a lot.

🐶 Kelpies use several herding styles, they can move livestock by nipping at their ankles (like corgis or Australian cattle dogs), but also by staring at them. They are also known to run along the back of sheep to make them move which is very specific to them.

🐶 German Shepherds were originally bred for slightly different purposes, their job is to keep the sheep within set boundaries while they are grazing to prevent them from damaging crops, and they were also meant to protect the flock.

🐶 Huntaways were bred to move sheep or cattle at great distances, and typically will use their loud bark to move the livestock around.

Tell us about your herding breed you live with!

The past year I have been learning a very special game for very special dogs. It's called Urban Herding! I travelled all the way to Scotland to learn about it, and now it's time to bring it to North Walian dogs 🐶🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Urban herding was created with the sole purpose of giving dogs who were originally bred to herd sheep or cattle, an outlet for their natural instincts. A lot of us live with those dogs, with an incredible amount of energy and busy mind, but very few of us actually have sheep in the backyard, so we end up with border collies who chase cars and corgis who nip ankles. We cannot suppress our dog's natural herding instinct, but we can give them the opportunity to use it safely and harness it in a positive way! 🐾✅

If you would like to know more about Urban Herding, keep an eye on this page or send me a message! I will soon be running an introduction workshop for anyone interested in giving their busy herdy dog a job! 😁

🐾Our puppies had their graduation day 🐾

For the past 5 weeks, these guys have been learning about coming back when called, walking nicely in the lead and settling around distractions among many other things. On week 6 for their graduation, we took them to a popular walking spot to practice everything they have learnt and apply it around real life distractions. Everyone was incredible and did an amazing job! They were able to focus around off lead dogs enjoying their walk, recall around people doing smelly barbecues, and settle around children playing, cars passing by and other dogs. Pretty amazing for young puppies. A big congratulations to their guardians and happy training! 🐶🐾

17/02/2024

Raising an adolescent dog can be quite a challenge sometimes! Working on their obedience training is important, but allowing them to experience the world, and spending time building your relationship with them is just as crucial. It's not uncommon to see frustration or fear based behaviour appear around that time, or have a dog who seems to have forgotten all about what you have spent the last few months teaching them!

Although it is tempting to think "they know what it means they're just being stubborn!", actually the best thing you can do is go back to the basics. Instead of expecting what your dog was doing 2 months ago, work with the dog that you have in front of you each day, and adapt your training and expectations to that dog.

The hormonal changes your dog is going through during adolescence make them more easily distracted by their environment, and this can be extremely frustrating for us humans! Which is why spending quality time with your adolescent dog will help you understand them better and smooth over frustration and exhaustion.

This course is for you if you're looking to spend an hour every week enjoying your dog's growing skills and capacities, with the benefit of tailored guidance in a fun group setting, with a passionate instructor.

Here are a few pictures of our teenagers from our recent teenage course, having a great time looking for snacks, engaging with their owners and being absolute goofballs 🐶

Thank you to Shannon’s Photography for taking those amazing shots and being so discreet while everyone was training.
