Some really good advice from mobivet and the reason we have moved all of our walks earlier and adjusted to make sure we are not out in the hottest parts of the days 😀. Also if it does get to hot then we will cancel for the safety of our furry friends 😊

🌞 **HEATWAVE WARNING!** 🌞

A heatwave is on the way, and while we humans may enjoy the sunshine, our furry companions can quickly become overwhelmed. Dogs, cats, and rabbits are especially vulnerable to heatstroke (hyperthermia) and other heat-related issues.

🚨 Please stay alert to the signs of overheating in each species and know what to do in an emergency.

🐶 DOGS – Signs of Overheating:

* Heavy panting or drooling
* Restlessness or lethargy
* Bright red gums or tongue
* Vomiting or diarrhoea
* Collapsing or unsteady movements

❗️Flat-faced breeds (like Pugs, Bulldogs), older dogs, and overweight pets are especially at risk.

🐈‍⬛ CATS – Signs of Overheating:

* Rapid or open-mouth breathing (panting is NOT normal in cats!)
* Drooling
* Agitation or pacing
* Red or pale gums
* Weakness or collapse

❗️Cats often hide when unwell – check quiet spots during hot weather.

🐰 RABBITS – Signs of Overheating:

* Fast, shallow breathing
* Lethargy, lying stretched out
* Hot ears
* Wetness around the nose or mouth
* Weakness or confusion

💥 PLUS: Flystrike Warning for Rabbits!
In warm weather, flies are attracted to soiled fur and bedding. They can lay eggs that hatch into maggots, causing flystrike, a painful and often fatal condition.

✅ Check your rabbit’s bottom twice daily
✅ Keep beds clean and dry
✅ Use fly screens or repellents
✅ Contact your vet immediately if you see maggots or wounds

🆘 What to Do in a Heat Emergency (UK Guidelines):

1. Move your pet to a cool, shaded space
2. Apply cool (not cold) water to their body, especially ears, paws, and belly
3. Use a fan or gentle air movement to help lower body temperature
4. Offer small amounts of water
5. Call your nearest emergency vet immediately – DO NOT DELAY - This does not need to be your registered vet! The closest vet to your location!

🚫 Avoid:
✋Ice-cold water or ice packs
✋Wrapping them in wet towels (this can trap heat)
✋Waiting to “see if they improve”
