Spring is finally here and with it plenty of moulting! Bunny owners - make sure you spend time grooming your rabbit during these times to prevent them ingesting excessive amounts of hair. Trichobezoars (hairballs) are one of the most common causes of intestinal obstruction, so combing can reduce the likelihood of gut stasis and obstruction.

Happy Easter! We couldn't resist sharing this picture. Spock and Egon were in for neutering and their owner had found these incredible buster collars! They didn't end up needing to wear them after their surgery but we couldn't resist taking a quick picture!

Wakey wakey! We are all thrilled with the arrival of spring and with it comes the end of hibernation. These three woke up this week and are busy munching away after their big sleep. When waking up your tortoise, give them a warm bath and then place them under their heat and UVB lights. We like to see them ideally eating within 24 hours and this should happen if they are warm enough and have not sustained any issues during hibernation. It is really important to contact us if your tortoise does not eat within the first 2-3 days of waking up to prevent conditions like hepatic lipidosis worsening. If you have any doubts please don't wait, just give us a call!

Beware of sticks! This is the third stick injury we have seen at the practice in the last month! Sticks can cause serious and life threatening injuries to dogs. Luckily in this case the stick was just lodged across the hard palate and easily removed but they can cause serious tears and puncture wounds to the head, neck and chest. We would always advise to be very cautious when letting your dog play with sticks and especially would not advise throwing them.

Meet Steve. He was found near some bins in Barnet suffering with severe cat flu, that had led to an eyelid deformity. He was grubby, unneutered, hungry and unhappy. Within 24 hours of being at the practice he started to realise that most humans are kind ( especially our wonderful nurses). He started to trust and lap up the cuddles. He wanted to explore and would even try and climb in the bin in the ward! Steve is now fully recovered, neutered and has had his eyelid repaired by vet Emete. He is loving life in his new home with his new humans.

"I can hear a heart murmur today" is something that no owner wants to hear when their pet is being examined. It immediately causes us to feel a bit of anxiety and worry for the future. The good news is that we understand far more about canine and feline heart disease than we did 10 years ago, enabling us to monitor and tailor treatments to help keep our pets fit and healthy for as long as possible. An echocardiogram (as seen performed here by Murry) provides us with vital information to understand the cause of a murmur and if and when it requires medical management. We strive to do everything we can to evolve with the times, so we can always provide the best level of care. #❤️dogs #❤️cats

CALLING ALL CLIENTS!
As of 12 January 2024 the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons new 'Under Care' guidance was implemented in order to comply with the Veterinary Medicines Regulations regarding the prescribing of antiparasitics. What this means is that as a practice, we now have to ensure that we have seen your pet every six months so that we can safely update and prescribe their antiparasitic medications. We have adjusted fees where possible to help keep preventative health care affordable. Please email or get in touch if you have any questions.

It was a big day yesterday for Charlie Koala, the Hermanns tortoise. She underwent surgery to remove her diseased ovaries, eggs and reproductive tract after suffering significant liver complications. Swipe to see her after recovering from her anaesthetic, with her feeding tube in place. Hopefully she will have a better road ahead thanks to a fantastic team at the practice.

It's the end of the hibernation period for lots of tortoises. We have unfortunately seen many tortoises with post hibernation anorexia, particularly those that were not fridge hibernated. Remember if your tortoise isn't eating within 48 hours of waking up please seek veterinary advice as they may be seriously ill.

HEAT WAVE ALERT. Many pets will struggle over the next few days. We advise against walking your dog in the extreme hot weather. Ensure animals at risk of heat stroke (dogs rabbits and small furries) have access to cool areas, cool mats, fans and if possible air conditioning. Do not travel with your pet unless necessary and where possible use an air conditioned car. Ensure access to water at all times. Please contact the practice if you have any concerns.
