Let's talk about rabbit vaccines. Many rabbit owners are unaware of the importance of vaccination for ALL rabbits, including those living indoors.
We vaccinate against myxomatosis and two forms of viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD). These diseases are spread by direct contact with infected rabbits, fleas and midges, or even fomites (particles in the environment). This means that you can go for a walk in the park, come home, and transmit disease to your pet rabbit via shoes and clothing. At the practice we have sadly diagnosed many sudden rabbit deaths via post mortem virology sampling. Please get your rabbit vaccinated with both the combined and new VHD vaccine. Contact us if you have any questions. Keep your bunnies safe! 🐇

Say hello to our new vet! Dr Oliver Morris BVMedSci BVM BVS MRCVS

Ollie qualified from the University of Nottingham in December 2024, and joined the practice 4 days after graduating! Born and raised in Barnet, he attended the same school as Ralph, and did a work placement with us 7 years ago, followed by many more, throughout his veterinary degree. Ollie has a particular interest in soft tissue surgery and ultrasonography. He loves all animals but has a special spot in his heart for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and labrador retrievers. He plans on getting two puppies named Rick and Ronnie. Ollies' hobbies include meeting up with friends, supporting Tottenham Hotspur, playing for a local football team in Barnet and watching movies!

Diego 😻 This little guy was lucky to survive after presenting to the surgery with several days of vomiting. After investigating, vets Emete and Ralph discovered a linear foreign body - in this case some string that he had been playing with and ingested. It was caught in his mouth, was down through his oesophagus and stomach and was lodged in his small intestine causing it to "bunch up." His intestines were very inflammed and a number of incisions had to be made throughout the bowel to remove the string safely. Within 24 hours of his surgery, Diego was purring, eating and playful. What a little legend.

At East Barnet we love our bunnies! A special shout out to Mr Butlins who has been a trooper since his rhinotomy last week! It's Rabbit Awareness Week so an important time to remember all that we can do to ensure we keep our rabbits as happy and as healthy as possible. Preventative health care, a good diet, exercise and company are just some of the things we encourage all of our clients to think about. We are very proud to be a Gold standard practice and strive to do everything we can to support our furry friends.

Spring is finally here and with it plenty of moulting! Bunny owners - make sure you spend time grooming your rabbit during these times to prevent them ingesting excessive amounts of hair. Trichobezoars (hairballs) are one of the most common causes of intestinal obstruction, so combing can reduce the likelihood of gut stasis and obstruction.

Happy Easter! We couldn't resist sharing this picture. Spock and Egon were in for neutering and their owner had found these incredible buster collars! They didn't end up needing to wear them after their surgery but we couldn't resist taking a quick picture!

Wakey wakey! We are all thrilled with the arrival of spring and with it comes the end of hibernation. These three woke up this week and are busy munching away after their big sleep. When waking up your tortoise, give them a warm bath and then place them under their heat and UVB lights. We like to see them ideally eating within 24 hours and this should happen if they are warm enough and have not sustained any issues during hibernation. It is really important to contact us if your tortoise does not eat within the first 2-3 days of waking up to prevent conditions like hepatic lipidosis worsening. If you have any doubts please don't wait, just give us a call!

Beware of sticks! This is the third stick injury we have seen at the practice in the last month! Sticks can cause serious and life threatening injuries to dogs. Luckily in this case the stick was just lodged across the hard palate and easily removed but they can cause serious tears and puncture wounds to the head, neck and chest. We would always advise to be very cautious when letting your dog play with sticks and especially would not advise throwing them.

Little Rossi was such a hero after having his horrible radial and ulnar fractures repaired by our visiting specialist orthopedic vet. Check out the mastery radiographs of before and after! Rossi was very grateful with plenty of purrs post op and soon home. We can't wait to see him able to use his leg comfortably again soon.

Meet Steve. He was found near some bins in Barnet suffering with severe cat flu, that had led to an eyelid deformity. He was grubby, unneutered, hungry and unhappy. Within 24 hours of being at the practice he started to realise that most humans are kind ( especially our wonderful nurses). He started to trust and lap up the cuddles. He wanted to explore and would even try and climb in the bin in the ward! Steve is now fully recovered, neutered and has had his eyelid repaired by vet Emete. He is loving life in his new home with his new humans.
