🐾This 4-week micro-course is perfect for older puppies and dogs aged 7 months and over who may haven't attended a training class before.

🐾In this course, we cover essential foundation behaviours like attention and focus, polite behaviour around visitors, walking nicely on the lead, and coming when called. This class will give you the tools and confidence to bring out the best in your canine companion.

🌟 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬: 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 🌟

Walking your dog should be a fun and relaxing experience, but it can sometimes be challenging if your dog pulls on the lead or gets easily distracted. Here are some updated tips to help make your walks more enjoyable for both you and your dog:

🐾𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 : Before heading out, ensure you've done some focus training with your dog. This helps set the tone for a more controlled walk.

🐾𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Well-fitting equipment and a lead that feels comfortable in your hands can make a big difference. Ensure your lead is the right length—too long, and your dog has more opportunity to go ‘free-lance’; too short, and you’re relying on lead management rather than teaching your dog.

🐾𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞: During your walk, select short training sessions (and ignore the rest!). For example, after your dog has toileted or run off some energy, spend a few minutes working on your loose lead training. This avoids frustration for both you and your dog.

🐾𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐟𝐟: Make sure you have treats with you and be ready to reinforce when your dog walks with a loose lead or checks in with you. Positive reinforcement is key!

🐾 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐓𝐢𝐩:

Don't forget, this is your dog's walk too! If you’re able, allow time for them to sniff, explore, and enjoy the environment. It’s a great way for them to engage their senses and decompress.

🌟 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 🌟

One of the key building blocks of effective dog training is focus. Whether you're working on walking nicely on a lead, improving recall, or encouraging polite behaviour around people and dogs, it all starts with getting your dog to focus on you.

Here are my top tips for improving your dog’s focus:

1. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚: Begin your training in a quiet environment where your dog can concentrate.
2. 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Slowly increase the level of distractions as your dog gets better at focusing.
3. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝s: Make sure you’re using treats or rewards that your dog finds irresistible. Don’t skimp on the good stuff!
4. Reinforce often: Be generous with your rewards to keep your dog motivated and engaged.

As we celebrate the first anniversary of our training centre, I’m reflecting on the many wonderful dogs and owners I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Each journey is unique, but the common thread is the positive transformation and stronger bonds that result from dedicated training.

This is socialisation 👇

What is puppy socialisation?

It is a stage of development in your puppy. It starts at 4 weeks and ends around 16 weeks. However actual socialisation should continue well after 16 weeks as your puppy will go through other development stages having different experiences.

The first thing to consider is your puppy will go through their first fear stage 7/9 weeks old. It's important not to overwhelm them. It's also important if they're struggling to be left alone not to leave them.

During the socialisation stage of development, it's not about socialisation in the context that we understand it. It's about exposure to the world. It's so important that the exposure the puppy gets is positive emotional experiences. So a nervous or sensitive puppy needs less. They can see the world but they don't need to interact with everything in it. They need exposure that they as an individual can cope with. Doing more will not turn them into a confident social butterfly it will probably make them more fearful, even reactive.

It's needs to be a slow steady pressure free pace. Slow down your walks, stop and give them time to take in the environment, there's new sounds, sights and smells. This can be a sensory overload for some. Let them sit and watch, take your time so they can take it all in and then process it.

We used to call it a critical stage of development but it's now a sensitive, because it's flexible. Your puppy is sensitive to experiences so make sure they are positive.

If your puppy is scared support them and help them. This won't reinforce or reward negative behaviours that are driven out of fear, apprehension or caution, it will cause them to relax and feel safe and then those behaviours will stop.
Yes the puppy will become a little dependent on your support but once they feel safe you can teach independence and reward brave choices. Feeling safe will activate exploratory control processes in the brain and your puppy will choose to explore and approach. This is much more powerful than being lured to something they're scared of. Luring with treats to scary things causes pressure and conflict which are negative emotional and stressful states. Timing is key and reinforcement should happen in safe places for it to be emotionally reinforcing.

Forget behaviour and think emotions and experiences at this time.

Work at the puppy's pace, don't rush 🐾❤️

🌟 Celebrating the First Anniversary of Outward-Hound's Training Centre 🌟

Fourteen years ago, I embarked on a journey to help dogs and their owners overcome challenges and build stronger bonds. While Outward-Hound has been a part of my life since 2010, this year marks a special milestone—the first anniversary of our dedicated training centre.

As we celebrate this first year, I want to share the story that inspired it all—Charlie’s story.

When I adopted Charlie from the RSPCA, he was a bundle of nerves. Separation anxiety had him barking constantly if he was left alone, even if I was just in a different room. He would pant, tremble, and pace, unable to settle. He even tried to claw his way through the kitchen door in his distress.

Charlie also struggled with a severe noise phobia. Bonfire Night was a nightmare for us—he would go into a flat panic at the sound of fireworks, and in the weeks leading up to November 5th, even the sound of a car door slamming would send him into a frenzy.

It took a lot of research, patience, and careful work to help Charlie with his anxiety and teach him how to cope with life. It took 12 weeks to address his separation-related issues and 18 months to help him with his noise phobia. But it was worth every moment. Seeing Charlie transform from a terrified dog into a happy, content companion was the most rewarding experience of my life.

Sadly, Charlie passed away at the beginning of this year at the age of 15, but his legacy lives on. Charlie is the reason I founded Outward-Hound in 2010, and he continues to inspire me every day. Thanks to him, I’ve been able to help countless dogs and their owners—not just in Barnsley and South Yorkshire, but across the country.

As we celebrate the first anniversary of our training centre, I want to thank everyone who has been part of this journey. Stay tuned this week for more stories, tips, and a special quiz on Wednesday!

In honour of welcoming our newest team member, I would like to take a moment to reintroduce our key team members who make Outward-Hound exceptional.

Katie joined our dog walking team in 2021 and quickly became an essential part of our Outward-Hound family. As our Team Leader, she plays a key role in ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently. Katie has a lively spaniel named Benji, whom she rescued 5 years ago. With her extensive experience and patient approach, she excels in working with dogs with special needs.

We also want to take a moment to remember Daxi, her beloved spaniel who brought joy to everyone and will always be in our hearts. Katie lost Daxi in June 2024, and we honour his memory.

Jules joined our Outward-Hound family in 2022. With over 3 years of experience as a professional dog walker, Jules has brought a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to our team. Jules has two Chihuahuas, Rascal and Amy, aged 10 and 12, as well as two guinea pigs and two tortoises.

While Jules is currently taking a break from dog walking, she remains a cherished member of our team. We deeply appreciate her contributions and the joy she brought to both our team and our furry clients.

We are thrilled to welcome Charlotte to the Outward-Hound dog walking team! 🌟 Charlotte is the proud owner of Hugo, a 2-year-old lazy French Bulldog who loves nothing more than relaxing in the paddling pool to stay cool this summer. 🐶💦
