We have just received a hedgehog from Pilton Park who is a bit snotty and sneezing, but much more concerning it has a head full of burned/singed spines.

We know that gardening is needed more often at this time of year, and that bonfires are a perfect way to dispose of the waste, but please, please, please check under the pile before setting light to it to check for hedgehogs who have made their home in the warm nesting materials you have kindly provided.

Luckily this little girl got away with just burned spines, but it could have been much worse.

Tonight we had a call about a hedgehog in Lynton, when we arrived after driving through heavy rain and big puddles across the roads.
I collected this big man, found on a road in Lynton, Quick Look at him in the car and he has nasel damage, from either being hit by a car or strimmer damage, this man is struggling to breathe and is very snotty, he is old and has very few teeth and is festooned with ticks, and also flystike.
Rather than him struggling to breathe which sounded awful in the car. Both Nikki and myself have made the hard decision to have him put to sleep, to end his suffering.
Thank you to the finders for asking for help.
RIP big man 🦔

As we begin to move towards the autumn months and Halloween/bonfire night, it would seem that the artists of Barnstaple are already out with their paint and decorating our native WILD hedgehogs.

Please do not do this. Not only could the paint you are using be toxic to the hedgehogs, but you are disrupting their natural camouflage.

This photo was taken last night near the Co-Op in Barnstaple, this hedgehog is now unable to effectively hide from its predators - including us humans as evidenced in this photo.

Now, this hedgehog, who is doing its own hedgehog thing, out at night like it should be, when next seen will have to be caught and subjected to a bath and scrub to try and remove the paint from its back.

Rather than mark the wildlife coming into your garden, just sit back and watch it living naturally in your garden. Enjoy them being comfortable enough to come that close to where humans inhabit, bringing their babies to your domain. Don’t potentially poison them with paint, which could lead to them becoming prey for a natural predator or worse us humans!

Also to dispel a myth, hedgehogs diet is only made up of 5% slugs/snails (which give them lungworm, just like if your dog ate one) the rest is made up of beetles, larvae and caterpillars. So please don’t think you are providing a banquet for them with dozens of slugs, you aren’t. You could be contributing to their internal parasite burden.

Please make sure you leave water in the garden for wildlife, I have just collected a hoglet who was severely dehydrated & comatosed.
The only place for this little one was heading to the vets. Sadly it died just as I got to the vets.

Don’t try and look after them yourselves these need specialist care. If the finders had called yesterday it might have stood a better chance.

Remember water, then box the hedgehog or hoglet then call for help and advice

Earlier this evening was messages about a hedgehog out in day light, this one was covered from head to toe in fly strike and even had maggots crawling around. Plus it was on the brink of death. Another one sadly put to sleep. Please make sure you leave water out for wildlife.
Far too many severely dehydrated hedgehogs and hoglets this year.
Thank you to the person that picked this one up and rang to say it was in a box and being kept warm

Another trip to the vets for a PTS
This big man has a broken back leg and was dragging his leg, on examination of the leg the ankle is broken, plus tibia and fibula.
The kindest thing for him was to have him put to sleep. Thank you to the finders for asking for help.

Thank you!

Lidl remove 'death trap' hedgehog huts from stores

Lidl has removed hedgehog huts from its stores after a hedgehog conservation group raised safety concerns about the product.
The hedgehog huts are described as a "natural shelter for hedgehogs" and suitable for "feeding, shelter and nesting".
But a hedgehog rescue charity claims that hedgehogs can freeze and become trapped in the hideouts.
Lidl said it had been selling the product across Europe for a number of years "with no reported issues regarding safety".

The hedgehog hideout is a small igloo shaped hut with a wire frame, with a layer of canvas and a wicker style exterior.
A label on the product describes it as a "comfortable winter shelter" and "quiet housing protected from the wind".
Andrea Cowan, who runs Loughgall hedgehog rescue in County Armagh, has rescued more than 500 hedgehogs in the past six years.
After the huts appeared in the Lidl's popular "middle aisle" earlier this week, she raised her concerns with the store.

Image caption, Andrea Cowan from Loughgall hedgehog rescue called for Lidl to remove the huts from sale
She described the huts as "shocking death traps" in a post on the rescue's page.
"They serve no purpose as far as hedgehogs are concerned, in fact they are dangerous and sadly many hogs have perished because of them," she alleges.
"They offer zero protection from the weather and in cases the hogs have frozen to death because damp inside has frozen their nesting material.
"The metal cage inside has repeatedly trapped hedgehogs because their spines get caught leaving them to starve to death."
Lidl said: "All products we sell comply with all EU and National Regulation."
Speaking to BBC News NI Ms Cowan said that wildlife rescues have been trying to get products like this banned from sale and has called for more regulation.
"There are no laws around products like this and people are free to make them," she said.
"We've seen them for sale in other stores before and usually once we explain our concerns to management they usually remove them from sale."

BBC News NI asked Lidl for a response to what was said in the Facebook post.
A spokesperson for Lidl in Northern Ireland said the store had recently introduced the product across 41 stores in Northern Ireland.
In a statement they said the product had "been sold in Lidl stores across Europe for several years and has proved exceptionally popular with customers, with no reported issues regarding safety.
"Lidl takes animal welfare extremely seriously and all products we sell comply with all EU and National Regulation. Prior to being stocked by Lidl in any of its stores, this specific product was subject to stringent SGS testing to ensure all quality and compliance standards were met.
"However, we take all feedback and concerns received regarding products on sale in our stores seriously, including feedback received about this product from a local hedgehog rescue organisation. As a precaution, we have removed the product from our stores in Northern Ireland this afternoon while we continue to seek expert advice on the matter."

Care and first aid advice for wildlife.

Mon -Fri 08:00 – 18:30
Weekends 09:00 – 15:00
Please be aware, we are not an Animal Hospital and are not able to offer a veterinarian service nor provide emergency treatment for badly injured animals.
If you have a wild animal that is obviously in pain, or injured, then your first point of contact is your nearest veterinary surgery.
All veterinary surgeons are obliged by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to provide 24-hour emergency cover, including the provision of emergency first aid and pain relief, to all animals regardless of species.
(You will not be expected to pay for their care, so please don’t hesitate.)
A veterinary surgeon will be able to provide advice and emergency care, including where necessary euthanasia. Ideally phone the veterinary surgery first, rather than just turning up, so they can give appropriate advice and/or be prepared for your arrival.

My family and I (I include Liz at Barny Hogs in my family, along with my Mum and daughter) are feeling particularly exhausted this year with the sheer amount of wildlife that is coming in and requiring care. We are hardly spending any time with each other and certainly have no lives outside of the rescue and rescuing wildlife.

As we intend to be long stayers in the rescue industry I think for all our sakes we are going to have to ensure that we stick rigidly to our opening hours, they can be found on our website

Usually the animals come first, but when you have to plan in advance a date night with your daughter and because you’ve sat down for the first time without actually doing something you end up sleeping through an entire film AND publicly snoring (apparently, although I’m sure she’s wrong, I don’t snore) in the cinema, and your child says that they never get to see you any more and they miss you then things have to change and become a bit more structured for everyone’s sake. We are also going to implement a day off within the week so that we don’t take in any new animals for just one day to allow us to have some semblance of time for families.

Until we get more voluntary drivers on board and can contact them to collect any animals in outlying areas we would very much appreciate it if you could bring the animals that you have found in to us. If you are unable to bring them to us then please take to your local veterinary practice and ask them to contact us if the animal is able to be rehabilitated.

If you would like to volunteer either as a voluntary driver, or to come in and help clean out the residents (inside and outside) and perhaps help feed the babies that come in please get in contact with us. There is a Google form here https://littlestwildlifehotel.org.uk/get-involved/ or email us at [email protected] we welcome volunteers who are committed people with a keen interest in wildlife and caring for it. We are actively seeking volunteer drivers in and around Barnstaple, Ilfracombe, Tiverton, Minehead, Cullompton, Instow and beyond!
