**Contains footage of surgery**
At the beginning of the month, Penny, a six month old Kelpie was involved in an accident with a vehicle on the farm her owner was working on.
On arrival at the surgery, Penny was showing signs of shock with very pale gums and she was struggling to breathe.
She was placed on intravenous fluids immediately, oxygen to help with her breathing and some strong pain relief. Once Penny was more comfortable, the injuries to her chest were assessed with ultrasound and x-ray. This revealed that her stomach and other abdominal organs were inside her thoracic (chest) cavity rather than in her abdomen. This was making it harder for Penny to breathe as the organs were taking up vital space within the thorax and her lungs were not able to inflate as normal. The x-ray of Penny’s chest confirmed that she had a ruptured diaphragm and diaphragmatic hernia. The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle which separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities, and aids with breathing.
That afternoon, Penny was taken to surgery to repair her diaphragm and return her organs to correct place. This surgery took several hours and required a large team of vets and nurses to support Penny, and she had to be manually ventilated whilst she was anaesthetised.
On recovery, it was clear that Penny was not breathing as we would expect her to and she was still suffering from a pneumothorax (air in the thoracic cavity outside the lungs) despite a chest drain being fitted. It was concluded that Penny had a small tear in one of her lungs from the accident, meaning every breath she took, a small amount of air was leaking into the chest and not allowing her lungs to fill with air properly.
Penny needed round the clock care to have her chest drain checked and emptied of air for her to survive the night.
The following day, Penny was surprisingly bright – she was eating well and had a waggy tail! We were getting very little out of her chest drain so it was decided that she coul

When walking your dog in the dark, make sure that both you and your dog are visible to others.
For owners, this means avoiding dark clothing and wearing reflective safety gear such as a vest, strap or wristband.
There are several options for keeping your dog visible in the dark, such as a reflective dog jacket, collar, lead, harness or even an LED light-up safety necklace. Dogs with darker fur are more difficult to see in the dark. However, even if you have a lighter coloured dog, you should make sure your dog can be seen in the dark.

Here is Maggie having her Laser Therapy session with our nurses. 😍🐶
Laser therapy is a painless procedure performed in the consulting room.
You would be referred by our vets for an initial course of 6 treatments, given over the course of 3 weeks. We can then tailor the treatments after the initial course to suit your pet - some require sessions every week, some every fortnight and some even less.
Laser therapy works by delivering specific red and near-infrared wavelengths of light to induce a therapeutic effect within the body. These effects include increased circulation, decreased swelling, reduction in pain and enhanced tissue repair.
Studies show that Laser Therapy can help with:
- Osteoarthritis
- Muscle strains
- Ligament sprains
- Post-orthopaedic recovery
- Chronic wounds
- Surgical wounds
Please give us a call on 01769 572176 to book an appointment with a vet if you feel Laser Therapy may suit your pet. If they are referred for sessions, you can either choose to pay per treatment or make use of our 6 sessions for the price of 5.
