Feel confident in our 21 Years of Experience

Care 4 Pets was launched in July 2000 to provide an alternative to boarding kennels or catteries for family pets that were used to being in family homes. Jon and Alison had a pair of cats, three dogs and various small animals, so they recognised the difficulties as well as the satisfaction of living with pets. Returning from family holidays had highl

ighted the need for an alternative for the pets' care, as a dog returning from kennels would often appear quiet and upset for some time afterwards, whilst the cats would be aloof and react as if they hadn't been fed at all, ever, (OK, so it's hard to tell with a cat.) Although it's nice to be able to call on the help of friends or neighbours no-one wants to impose or demand too much. Initially Care 4 Pets' services were limited to home boarding and house visits in Barry, Dinas Powis and Penarth, but soon they found that a lot of people were feeling the same way about their pet's care and readily welcomed the option of having a paid pet carer to ease their concerns and now offer services across South Wales. Be assured our staff is reliable, honest and responsible.

Our accomplished South Wales team of pet carers have all cared or currently care for animals of their own. Each carer is police checked, vetted by the Care 4 Pets staff and their current premises inspected to ensure that they are suitable for the pets that they will be looking after. All of our carers are covered by the company's public liability insurance in the event of any third party accident occurring whilst caring for your pet. ☀️ Dogs and Ice Cubes ☀️

The hot weather has returned and we find yet again the usual messages shared across social media.

DO NOT walk dogs in this heat - true ✔
DO NOT leave dogs in hot cars - true ✔
DO NOT give your dog ice cubes - false ❌

Will ice cubes, frozen treats or frozen KONGs cause your dog harm?

No. ❌

There are lots of posts in circulation that suggest from an unknown and unnamed vet's advice that giving ice or frozen treats will cause serious harm or even death. This is not true.

Please when you see anything shared on social media question the source. An unnamed vet and veterinarian practice, a post copied and pasted, or simply posted from a cropped screen shot is an instantly questionable source.

If your dog is fit and healthy with no signs of heat stroke they are more than safe to:
- eat and ice cube
- play with ice cubes
- have ice in their water bowl
- have frozen food/doggy ice cream
- have a frozen KONG
- enjoy frozen treats inside ice

These can only be dangerous when a dog is already suffering from heatstroke and have been given iced water in an attempt to cool them down. This cools them down too quickly and can potentially send their body in to shock.

If your dog is overheating or suffering from heatstroke, then please get your dog to a vet as possible!

To avoid heatstroke DO NOT walk your dog in hot weather.
You can very easily miss walking your dog for a number of days. Scent work, enrichment activities or mental stimulation are great ways to entertain your dog on hot days.

Missing a walk will not harm your dog.
Giving a frozen treat or KONG will not harm your dog.

Heatstroke will......

This is an X-ray of a 2 week old puppy.
Look at how far the bones have to grow before they become a proper bony joint! This is why you should never let puppies jump, walk up/down stairs, over exercise or over train. Doing too much impact activity at a young age will cause serious issues later in life, or even at a young age as hip dysplasia and other orthopaedic conditions are rising in puppies!
Remember the puppy rule for every month increase activity by 5 minutes! For example an 8 week old puppy only needs 10 minutes physical activity a day - a 6 month old only needs 30 minutes a day of physical activity!!
*physical activity includes - going for a walk, training, playing fetch, running, playing with other dogs etc.

Enjoy your new puppy but remember you wouldn't make a 6 month old baby run a mile a day so don't make your puppy either!

Hello everyone,

Janette and I would like to thank you for the wonderful support we have received following the sudden passing of David, Janette’s partner, and my son, on Saturday 4th July. Your cards, messages, and obvious caring have been so comforting to us. David’s funeral is to take place on Tuesday 28th July so we ask for your patience a little longer. We are supporting a wonderful charity in lieu of flowers in David’s name, the charity, Action for Children, helps fragile children who have a difficult start in life, a cause close to David’s heart. If anyone would like to donate this is the link https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/davidslegacy/ Thank you once again, Alison and Janette.

Drop in Nail Clipping Sleek & Chic Dog grooming

We have had a number of requests for appointments for dog nail clipping, we are unable to make individual appointments so we are setting aside time on Saturday between 12.30 and 2pm for drop-in nail clipping. If you arrive at the salon between these times you will be seen for your dog's nails to be cut. If there is a queue outside please observe the 2-metre social distancing policy. The door will be locked and only one dog at a time will be permitted, you will be asked to wait outside. Please remember that only people that can walk to the salon should make this trip.

Hello everyone, we are very aware of the need to put in place extreme practices at this time. We have decided to have just one groomer working at the salon, this will be Tracey. Kim, Kate and Alison will not be available with immediate effect so we will be in touch with people who have appointments to rearrange where we can, we ask for your patience and understanding. We believe that the practices we are putting in place will allow us to protect our staff and our clients. We will be locking the door and instructions for entering will be posted on the door, please adhere to these strictly. Please do not enter the second door with the staff only sign. We know how important it is to make sure that your dog is kept in good condition but it may be that we will not be able to offer regular appointment schedules so we are recommending at this time that you consider a total clip down to maintain your dog's comfort. Please feel free to contact us either on Facebook or by email [email protected] or call 01446744633. Stay safe, Alison and staff.

Important information from Origin Vets

COVID-19 information for your exotic pets. This is a long heartfelt post.

Firstly thank you for your continued support of Origin Vets over the last 7 years. We really appreciate this.

As you all know, we see a huge variety of species and many of our patients are urgent cases that do need to be seen. This is important for pet health and we know how important your pet is to you. We still want to help your pet so that you do not have to worry.

However, there is a risk that clients waiting near each other in waiting rooms and spending much time talking to our vets will cause an increase in spread of Coronavirus. We do not want to put our colleagues or clients at risk as much as we can avoid.

We have therefore made an important decision about the foreseeable future and we need our clients to respect this in order to protect the public and our colleagues

We have decided that we will continue to see urgent cases only.
EXAMPLES OF THIS Includes the following:

Respiratory difficulties
Trauma
Inappetance
Gut stasis especially in rabbits and rodents
Collapse
Lethargy
Dental issues especially in rabbits and rodents
Egg binding
Follicular stasis
Strainging to urinate/blood in urine
Straining to pass faeces/blood in faeces
Problems with giving birth
Urgent neutering eg due to tumours

For routine husbandry and dietary talks we will be able to arrange video calling for you so you do not need to leave your home.

We request that any client that needs to bring their animal to the practice sits in the car. We ask that you knock the door with your elbow to let one of us know that you have arrived. We will collect your animal from you and examine them in the practice. We will consult via the phone (Cardiff and Bridgend clinics we will be running the Zoom App as a trial next week). All payments will be taken over the phone. On the rare occasion that a client needs to be present in the room we have alcohol hand gels and also soap available to wash your hands. We request that you avoid touching the doors and tables. Our colleagues will open all the doors for you.

As previous please contact us before hand if you answer yes to one or more of the following:
- Have you been outside the UK in the last 14 days or been with anyone that has?
-Have you developed a continuous cough, a fever, muscle aches or been in contact with anyone who has in the last 14 days?
-Are you self isolating?

Please don't worry if you answer yes to any of the above , we will work a plan out for your animal to be seen safely.

Why are we doing this ?

Protection of the public especially those at risk is paramount. We are desperately trying to prevent the spread but still treat your exotic pets on emergency basis.
We must conserve our oxygen supplies and equipment including masks and gloves so that the human hospitals are able to obtain them. There is also every chance that the hospitals will require veterinary support in the forthcoming weeks .
By reducing our clinics to emergency only means we are able to do this .

Anybody who has an animal on longterm medication will be able to have repeat medications. We ask that you ring in advance to order these and when you arrive that you knock the door and one of our team will give you the medication through the door. Payment will be taken over the phone.

We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We trust you understand our reasoning.

We are social distancing and by our wonderful clients helping we will be able to continue to provide the veterianry support needed.

Origin Vets wishes to thank the NHS colleagues for all they are doing and we are ready should you need our help.

Origin Vets wishes to thank the partner practices for continuing to allow us to work for our emergencies.

Thank you for your support and please stay safe.

Hello everyone, we are doing our best to plan ahead for the measures required around the Coronavirus. If there is a nationwide lockdown, we don’t know how this will affect us and whether we will be allowed to trade. We have received a delivery of Nutriment and are expecting a delivery of Eden, Burns and a general delivery today which includes some products that we don't normally stock such as general dog and cat food. What we don’t know is to what scale our suppliers will be able to meet demands. For this week we are trading as normal today, Friday and hopefully Saturday. We will of course be putting our regular customers first as they are the people that keep us going during normal times. Please be assured we are doing our best to make sure that things run as smoothly as possible in these difficult times. We are planning a home delivery service if permitted and will keep you updated on this. Stay safe. Alison, Janette and Debbie.

HELP! We are now a casualty of the virus!! Our charity shops are now closed as most of the volunteers are elderly. As a result we have now lost our funding for our cats. We still have to feed them and no doubt have trips to the vet. Also as a result we will not be able to take in any cats unless in a dire emergency. We will not be able to help out people with veterinary fees for cats and dogs until our shops reopen. Unfortunately we don’t know when this will be! If you would like to support our funding we have an Amazon wish list (link on our webpage, maesteganimalwelfaresociety.org), a Pay Pal account ([email protected]) or you can donate straight to our bank.
Maesteg Animal Welfare Society, Nat West, sort code 53:81:27. Acc no 21780315. We have never asked for funding previously as we are almost self sufficient via our shops, but people have been generous in the past with donations of money and food on top of our charity shop funding. All our cats in our care will be well looked after as always, but if you would still like to adopt we are available, however please make sure you have adopted all the safety measures as advised by government legislation. Please wear gloves and make sure you do not have a sore throat, cough etc. we do not want any infection in the cattery. We still have to care for the cats so we must make sure we are not infected in any way. If a cat is adopted we have room for another to come in. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Hello everyone, we are aware that there are going to be many changes over the coming weeks, people aged over 70 may be restricted to their homes and a total lockdown will be challenging to say the least. We are also aware that many people shop at other stores, such as Pets at Home, possibly for items we do not generally stock. We are doing our best to be proactive and plan ahead for the next few months or so. We don't know what will happen with our own suppliers so we are offering to order in items now that we don't normally hold in stock in the event that you won't be able to get to your regular supplier. As we tend to specialise in pet food not usually obtainable at supermarkets etc we don't normally hold stock of basic brands but we think this would be a sensible thing to do. If you would like us to order in, while we can, products that you think you will need, please either get in touch by phone 01446 744633 or message us here or email [email protected]. We hope to be able to offer a delivery service too if things get worse. Please do not hesitate to contact us. Kind regards, Alison, Janette and Debbie.
