Worth a read...

As your dog retrieves the first...second...third...maybe fifth or sixth ball, his muscles start to tire and soon they reach overload, where they no longer can fully control and support your dog's movements. Now, when your dog does those amazing athletic maneuvers to snag the ball, soft tissues like the cranial cruciate ligament, iliopsoas muscle and tendon, and the muscles and ligaments that support the vertebrae are overstretching. Minor tears are occurring. Now the ball is thrown 10, 12 times or more and ultimately your dog lies down, exhausted.

That period between when your dog's muscles are in overload, and when your dog lies down exhausted, is the injury zone (Figure 1). But remember, with all that adrenaline, your dog doesn't feel the injuries happening, so you have no idea that the tissues are being used beyond their capacity.

When this game is repeated day after day, month after month, the small tissue tears become large ones, and suddenly it becomes evident that your dog is in pain and has an injury. Of course, it hasn't been sudden at all-what seemed sudden is just the final result of repeated stress and strain until the tissues gave way.

So very true! Do your dog a favour and ditch the launcher.

Great information from Canine Principles on why ball throwing isn't good for your dog!

The physical demands placed through a dog's body when the ball is 'captured' involves hard braking and sharp turns. These fast twists and turns stress joints and the soft tissues that stabilise them leading to potential injuries.

The obsessive drive to constantly chase after the ball isn't because they 'love it', they enjoy the hormonal rush....it's not a good idea to tire them out with this sort of play.

Alternatives to ball throwing:

⭐ Sniffing out treats in long grass
⭐ Hide their ball/toy and ask them to seek it
⭐ An interactive game of tuggy
⭐ Exploring somewhere new
⭐ Teaching them some tricks
⭐ Recall practice - running for humans as well!
⭐ A duvet day with a nice chew ...dogs need rest days too.

What is Clinical Canine Massage?
A unique, strong, manipulative Remedial Massage for dogs that works by releasing tight, sore muscles, removing debilitating ‘Knots’ or Trigger Points that cause referred pain and helps rehabilitate injuries by breaking down restrictive scar tissue caused by daily activities that may be responsible for your dogs discomfort. It can help to resolve many day to day mobility issues whether they have suddenly come on or have been there for while. Getting your dog therapeutically treated by a Member of the Canine Massage Guild is a must for any dog owner concerned with their dogs mobility and health. It can help give you answers for what you are seeing with your dog and importantly then do something about it with an hour of hands on therapy.
The aim is to give your dog results in just 1-3 sessions.
It’s also natural form of pain relief that can help to resolve soft tissue or muscular problems and helps support orthopaedic issues like Arthritis and Hip Dysplasia with tangible results.
For results you can see and your dog can feel!

Ours love blueberries, we also use them as treats when out walking 🙂

🐶 One of the most important things you can feed your meat-eating, organ-devouring, bone-crunching dog is … blueberries!

🫐 Blueberries have the highest antioxidant properties of any fruit ... and your dog needs them to fight cellular damage caused by free radicals … also known as oxidative stress.

Free radicals are the result of toxins, pollution, chemicals, drugs and processed food … and they damage your dog’s cells, are a huge cause of aging and can lead to degenerative diseases.

But you can slow down time and add years to your dog's life by feeding blueberries as 5 to 10% of your dog’s diet ... and get these benefits:

- Slow down aging
- Minimize DNA damage that can lead to cancer
- Improve cognitive function
- Inhibit tumor growth
- Lower blood sugar and fight diabetes
- Decrease chronic inflammation
- Improve mobility
- Improve arthritis

When you feed your dog blueberries, you’re giving him a fighting chance against free radicals that can steal years from your dog.

With sadness we have decided to relinquish our lease. The current economic climate means that the premises is just no longer viable.

This is not the end of The Canine Wellbeing Centre and all appointments are still valid - just with a slight location change. We will be in touch to confirm this with everyone in due course.

Thank you for your continued support in these difficult times.

We've been feeing a little deflated of late. Then, yesterday this gem popped up in our 'memories' and it's a great reminder of the effect we can have on others.

The hardest part of working (and living) with dogs is undoubtedly when we say goodbye. Grief is not linear, and the grief we feel for our beloved dogs can sometimes overwelm us. We are very lucky here to work with and be part of the lives of so many dogs. We support them right up until they're ready to cross the bridge and continue running with their friends until we all meet again.

We love Gill Hedley's explanation of Fascia in the attached video.

Myofascial Pain is common in dogs, and we have seen great results using clinical canine massage to treat it, bring relief and comfort. If your dog seems to have slowed down, looks tight, or has 'twitchy skin' get in touch to arrange a free muscular health check so I can assess their fascia (along with superficial muscles).
