Introducing Super Stan! 🐶

Stan presented to us two years ago for a mast cell tumour (MCT) on his lip. Most dogs present with an obvious lump, but occasionally we see dogs with almost allergic-like reactions because the cells in these tumours release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals which causes swelling.

Stan presented with intermittent massive facial swelling which was focussed around his lip but affected his whole face. There was no obvious spread to other areas on testing, apart from a strong suspicion of spread to a nearby lymph node. This was removed and confirmed the lymph node had been effaced by cancer cells.

Surgery is typically the best treatment for the primary tumour but, in Stan's case, this was not feasible due to the fact there was no obvious tumour, just intermittent diffuse swelling. On CT scan, there was abnormal tissue in most of his lip, but no discrete mass/lump.

He was treated with a course of 15 daily radiation sessions by our Specialist medical and radiation oncologist James Elliott, treating his lip with a large safety margin given how diffuse his tumour was.

We also treated all the lymph nodes in his neck, because we know one was positive for cancer and so there was a concern there would be some cancer hiding there, too. His treatment went very well and he went on to complete a short course of chemotherapy afterwards.

He is still doing very well today, with no evidence of his cancer returning and we are so thrilled we could help such a lovely dog! Well done, Stan! ❤️

The purr-fect patient! 🐱

Thirteen-year-old domestic short-hair cat Gizmo was seen earlier this year by Carlos Rubiños, RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery and European Diplomate, suffering from an aggressive cancer.

Carlos carried out an innovative surgical procedure to remove the tumour and Gizmo was able to return home to his loving owners.

We're happy to report Gizmo was doing very well at his post-op check two months after his surgery and has remained healthy since, with no signs of cancer regrowth.

🎃 Happy Halloween to all those celebrating! 👻

Halloween can be a ‘spooktacular’ time for many, but it can be a stressful experience for pets. Here are some helpful tips to keep them safe and happy during the Halloween season:

🐶 Reassure your pets if you’re dressing up. Masks and makeup might be fun for you, but they could scare your pets if they don't recognise you.

🚪 Keep pets secure as doors open and close for trick-or-treaters. Make sure they stay away from escape routes, and ensure they're microchipped just in case!

🎆 If bright lights or loud noises are anticipated, provide a safe space where your pets can retreat and feel comfortable.

🍬 Keep treats out of reach—chocolate, sweets, and anything with xylitol can be dangerous for pets.

🎃 Decorations add to the fun, but keep them out of reach. Avoid open flames, small lights, or anything that could tempt curious pets.

We hope you and your pets have a safe and 'fang-tastic' Halloween, but if you need us, we're here to help! 💚

🐱 Meet Gatto, a brave cat who faced a life-threatening illness at just nine months old. 🧡 Severely anaemic due to a rare immune disease called precursor-targeted immune-mediated anaemia (PIMA), Gatto came to Southfields as he urgently needed a blood transfusion. 🩸 With no immediate cat donors available, Gatto received dog blood to keep him going! 🐶

Thanks to the incredible generosity of local cat blood donors, Gatto received the three life-saving blood transfusions he needed. 🙏 Gatto regularly takes steroids to manage his underlying condition, and he is now back to his playful, cuddly self. 🐾 Your cat could help save a life, too! 🌟

Consider signing them up as a blood donor – it could make all the difference for a cat in need. Contact us to learn more! ❤️🐾

Our team's wellbeing is always a priority and that focus has remained more important than ever.

Since the nearby fire which forced our hospital to close, we have worked closely with our team and mental health professionals to put measures in place, such as providing a temporary communal workspace and arranging counselling and wellbeing days, to allow our associates to explore different avenues of support.

This has included 'walk and talks', team-building exercises and weekly yoga sessions at a local sports club.
