We were excited to be able to take part in the INSPIRE Business Awards for a second year in a row. We had a fantastic evening with some of our team at the awards which took place at Oakley Hall.

We were delighted to be awarded the Wellbeing Champion Award, which is awarded to the organisation that can demonstrate a dedicated commitment to delivering outstanding employee wellbeing.

One initiative that impressed the judges was our commitment to mental health which is an important issue in the veterinary profession. We have three mental health first aiders, regular well-being drop in sessions for the team, a wellbeing newsletter, private health care and access to a BUPA mental health hotline.
Other initiatives include promoting a 'no blame culture' and trying to ensure we create an environment where we can reflect on clinical situations and improve where needed, we also offer a food bank and sanitary products.
We continually try to listen to our team so that we can improve the quality of our provision, based on feedback. We clearly recognised that our veterinary practice would be nothing without our team!

Many of these ideas have been championed by Molly one of our nurses. Molly feels passionately about mental wellbeing and trying to ensure that we have created a supportive environment. We couldn't have achieved this award without her, and the help of our other mental health first aiders Betty and Beki.

Do you have a large breed dog? Did you know they might be eligible to donate blood?

This is Casper. He belongs to Lucy, one of our night vets. As you can see he's very proud to donate blood to the pet blood bank regularly 😀

For your dog to be a blood donor, they must meet certain criteria. Your dog’s welfare is always our priority and so for them to become a lifesaver, they must be:

Fit and healthy
Between one and eight years old
Weigh more than 25kg
Have a good temperament
Have never travelled outside of the UK and Ireland
Vaccinated or have an annual titre test after the first year booster*
Not on any medication

In addition to meeting the donor criteria, the pet blood bank look for dogs who are confident and happy being handled. They should enjoy meeting new people and be comfortable going to the vets. Your dog needs to be willing and happy to take part in the donation process and show us this through their behaviour.

If your dog is anxious or nervous, wary of new people, or fearful at the vets, we would encourage you to support us in other ways. Dogs like this may find the donation process stressful. The welfare of your dog always comes first.

The Hampshire Vet now has a Green Team!

Some of our team have set up a Green Team to help tackle reducing our environmental impact as a practice, and also for us to reduce our personal footprint on the planet.

The team have introduced lots of ways to reduce the practice impact such as switching off lights and computers, keeping the heating down, ways to reduce waste and introducing more methods of recycling.

The Green Team recently took part in The Great British Spring Clean on a Saturday morning. Members of the team took part in a litter pick around the practice and local area. They had a very successful morning and celebrated with a well deserved drink in the pub.

We are very proud to have a team that not only care so well for our patients but also our environment and local community.

Meet handsome Smudge!

Smudge came to see our vet Lisa after his owners noticed he had a lump in his mouth. A biopsy was taken which showed the lump to be an acanthomatous amyloblastoma, a benign tumour that is painful and can grow quickly eventually making it difficult to eat. This type of tumour not only affects the gum but invades the jawbone as well and surgery to remove the part of the jaw affected is the only cure. Smudge had an outpatient CT scan at another facility to see how extensive the tumour was and help plan his surgery.

Lisa is an RCVS Recognised Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery and was able to perform the surgery on Smudge who has made a wonderful recovery and is now tumour free.
