🩵This gorgeous boy is Troy 🩵
Troy was transferred to us from a local practice several months ago after becoming acutely unwell over several days. He presented collapsed and unable to walk, and on initial examination we warned his owners that we weren't sure he was going to make it.
His blood worked showed that Troy was suffering acute liver and kidney failure due to developing diabetes, and going into diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA). Symptoms of diabetes include: excessive thirst/urination, weight loss, lethargy and decreased appetite.
DKA is a medical emergency where the body is unable to produce enough insulin to control glucose levels. The body cannot use glucose without insulin, this causes massive blood glucose elevations, and the body uses fat supplies to create ketones as source of emergency fuel. Ketones can cause the body to become increasingly acidic, causing an abnormal fluid balance, and electrolyte imbalances leading to arrhythmias and muscle dysfunction.
Troy was hospitalised with our team, 24 hours a day, for a week to receive critical care involving short acting insulin, aggressive fluid therapy and electrolyte correction. Troy can be vocal and dislikes being handled but Emily managed to build a rapport with him, making him feel safe enough to be unmuzzled and hand fed, ensuring his road to recovery.
Despite some complication due to a diabetic neuropathy, Troy has bounced back and is now a well controlled diabetic due to the committed owners.

As many of you may have heard the CMA are investigating veterinary fees, and the veterinary industry as a whole is facing scrutiny. This investigation is something that The Hampshire Vet wholeheartedly welcome.
🐾 The Hampshire Vet is a proudly independent practice. One of the reasons that The Hampshire Vet was established, was a frustration with the increasing corporatization of the veterinary industry and an associated increase in veterinary costs and loss of emphasis on personalised care.
🐾We are delighted to have created a practice that concentrates on the care of patients and clients alike, and where treatment plans for your pets' are created WITH you, taking in to account your pet's needs and cost.
🐾Our practice offers one of the lowest consultation fees in Basingstoke, and we strive to be open in regards to treatment costs. We list our fees on our website and will always provide an estimate for treatment or medication.

Facebook friends meet the fabulous Fennec 😻
🐾Fennec visited vet Jamie a couple weeks back after his owners became concerned he had vomited continuously over a 24 hour period, we were able to see him straight away and start invetigations immediately.
🐾Upon investigation his abdominal x-ray didn't look quite right and his intestines were bunched tightly together (see xray photos).
🐾During a challenging surgery Jamie was able to remove nearly a metre of sparkly plastic thread that had become tangled within his intestines. Something we call a linear foreign body - a problem that can be fatal if not quickly identified and removed.
🐾Fennec needed 48 hours of hospitalisation with us at The Hampshire Vet, recovering in our dedicated cat only ward and was super affectionate and relaxed throughout his stay.
We are delighted to say he has made a full recovery and hope his sparkly ribbon days are behind him.
🐾Did you know we keep all our inpatients overnight to ensure their recovery is as stress-free as possible.
Unfortunately our phone and internet are currently down this morning due to a fault with BT, which they are currently working on.

😻We work to International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) standards at The Hampshire Vet and are in the process of receiving accreditation.
😻We understand the importance of a calm, tranquil environment for cats and have taken several steps in the bespoke design of our practice to ensure their visit to the vets is as stress free as possible.
😻We have a separate cat only waiting room which feeds directly into our dedicated cat only consult room to minimise mixing with dogs.
😻Our cat only consult room is spacious providing space for cats to explore and gaze out the window whilst we discuss your concerns with your pet. We notice a huge difference in the stress levels of cats in consults as a result of this.
😻Our cat ward is separate to our dog ward and provides a calm environment for cats to recuperate following their treatment. Our overnight ward space achieves ISFM gold standard - the highest benchmark level.
😻In each of these rooms we use environmental pheromones to help cats to feel settled in the unfamiliar environment.

This is Charley, he came in for a dental before Christmas as he had significant plaque build up. 😷
After a thorough assessment, following a scale and polish to clean Charley's teeth, there were fortunately no extractions required. You can see the difference in the before and after photos.🦷
Early intervention is key to prevent tooth decay and extractions. This procedure will help keep Charley's teeth sparkling white for years to come. 😁
Why do we anaesthetise all our patients for dental treatment?
- to allow for thorough assessment of all surfaces of the tooth, including the roots.
- obtain dental x-rays if needed.
- Scaling of teeth aerosolises bacteria from the plaque which would be inhaled if your pets airway was not controlled by intubation.
- Extractions are often needed and so the anaesthetic minimises any discomfort experienced by your pet.
The thorough assessment, dental x-rays, safety of the procedure and comfort would not be possible without the anaesthetic. Our nurses are all highly trained in anaesthesia to ensure your pets safety throughout the procedure.

😻 Happy National Cat Day 😻 We love cats at The Hampshire Vet. So much so that we gave them some extra special consideration when we were designing our premises. Cats are particularly prone to stress especially at the vets so we aim to do our utmost to reduce these stresses and keep our patients, and owners calm. 🐈We have a completely separate cat waiting room with tables to place your cat basket on as they find being place on the floor stressful.
