🐱 Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. It is a common and very well known disorder in people but did you know that our older pet cats can be hypertensive too? 🐱
Most healthy cats will have a normal
blood pressure between 80 and 150 mmHg. A cat is considered to be hypertensive if their blood pressure is persistently above 160 mmHg.
Like in many people, there are often no, or only vague, initial outward signs which can include sleeping more or being less active and this means hypertension may stay undiagnosed
for a long period of time & so the disease is often termed a ‘silent killer’ ‼️

Meet Merlin!🤩🩺

Merlin is a 3kg, 15 year old Yorkiepoo who presented to our referral medic for investigation of a non-productive cough and breathlessness following exertion. Merlin was visibly dyspnoeic with inspiratory and expiratory effort. Merlin was anaesthetised and the larynx was oedematous with an abnormal movement consistent with laryngeal paralysis. A CT scan showed laryngeal swelling and fluid in the oesophagus. Merlin was discharged with medical treatment for gastrointestinal reflux and upper airway inflammation, but he failed to respond to treatment and his symptoms continued. Merlin was then examined by our soft tissue surgeon, Samantha Lane who anaesthetised him and surgically treated his laryngeal paralysis. Laryngeal paralysis is a condition usually seen in larger breeds such as Labrador Retrievers and can be associated with a generalised polyneuropathy. There are reports in smaller dogs, but this is usually associated with other conditions causing direct pressure on the larynx or the nerve, which wasn't seen in Merlin's case. The surgery was particularly difficult due to the tiny size of Merlin's laryngeal cartilages and risk of suture fracture during placement. Merlin recovered from his operation and was discharged from the hospital the following day. At his post-operative check-ups the owner reported that Merlin was back to his energetic self at home and chasing their other dog. 🥰🐾

The surgery is now closed until 0830 on Friday 27th December. In case of emergency please contact out of hours providers Vets Now Bath who will be based here at Rosemary Lodge Vet Hospital throughout the festive period 🚨

Vets Now is here for you when your regular vet practice is closed over the festive period. 🎄

We will be open 24 hours on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. For New Year our clinic will be open 24 hours on Wednesday 1st of January.

Outside of these dates, our clinic will operate as normal providing our out-of-hours service and care you can count on.
