WOOF-ITS BITESIZE: WEEK 4 + COMPETITION TIME!

“Hi everyone,
This week’s class is going to be a bit shorter than usual but nonetheless still fun and handy. Now the weather has begun to improve over the past days why not try some more sent games outside which we mentioned in week 1.
In the meantime, though, I have a great exercise I will be discussing which some of you may remember from a while ago. Regardless, I thought it would be a great idea to refresh your memory or, if your new, introduce you to some ‘Premack’ training. The purpose of Premack training is to reinforce less probable behaviours by providing the opportunity to engage in a more desired behaviour.
The improbable behaviour in this exercise will be to walk with a loose lead, the probable behaviour is to get a treat out of their bowl. To start, make sure you have your dog on a lead 2 meters away from your dog’s food bowl with a desirable treat inside. Then you will approach the bowl with your dog on a loose lead. It is improbable your dog will walk nicely and more likely pull. To rectify this, start again and repeat the process until your dog is walking nicely right up to the bowl. Make sure you are silent as this is the time for your dog to think for himself. It is also important to be strict; any pulling and you start again. Once you get to the bowl without any pulling you can give permission to allow the probable behaviour, getting the treat out of their bowl.
To get a better idea have a look at the video. As you can see, she pulled so I restarted without saying anything. Once I reached the bowl without any pulling, I offered her the treat. Please don’t be discouraged, it takes a long time for your dog to learn.
