Merry Christmas!🎄🎅🛷
Our final Christmas post celebrates our stunning emus!
We are currently well underway into the emu breeding season, with eggs incubating cosily.
Emus are a fascinating species, native to Australia. They can run over 30mph and can live up to 35 years in captivity!
Did you know, male emus are the ones to sit on the eggs, for around 60 days! He will care for the chicks, sometimes without the help of the female.
They will often pair for the breeding season. However, astonishingly our adults have formed a trio!

Pictured looking festive is Emmy, one of our chicks hatch in March 2024!

Day 24: French Copper Black Marans
This breed originated in, yep you guessed it, France!
Taking their name from the town of Marans 🇫🇷, this breed was created from breeds such as the Coucou de Malines, Croad Langshan, Rennes, Faverolles, barred Rock, Brakel and Gatinaise.
By the 1920s, the copper black Marans had become one of the most highly valued breeds in France and was soon exported to other countries such as the UK and USA.
Their deep chocolate coloured eggs are one of their most prominent characteristics.

Day 23: Cream Legbar🪺
The Legbar is a rare British auto-sexing breed.
The breed was created in the twentieth century by Reginald Crundall Punnett and Michael Pease at Cambridge University.
They are a cross between American barred Plymouth Rock and brown Leghorns, which created the gold and silver varieties.
The cream variety was later created by Michael Pease, by crossing the gold and silver varieties with white Leghorn.
Their distinctive crest and beautiful blue eggs were introduced later when crossed with Araucanas!

Day 22: 🌟Frizzle Pekin bantam🌟
A frizzle is a chicken with the curled feather gene 🧬
This gene was originally found in both Cochin and Pekin and is still today mostly seen in bantams.
The gene is heterozygous (two different versions), so when breeding two frizzles together the chicks have a 50% chance of being frizzle like the parents.
However, there is also a 25% chance of having normal feathering and a 25% chance of becoming “over frizzled”, with feathers that are brittle and resemble pipe cleaners.
For this reason, it’s best to breed a frizzle with a normal feathered chicken, so avoid the risk of becoming “over frizzled”!

Day 21: Guineafowl 🦤

Originating from West Africa, Guineafowl have been bred and hunted for food for centuries. They've been a part of human lives for a very long time, there are even drawings of them on the walls of pyramids.
It wasn’t until the 1500’s that they were introduced to Western Europe by the Portuguese, eventually becoming poplar here in the UK in Elizabethan times for their meat and rich eggs.

After centuries of breeding, they now come in many colours and are more likely kept as ornamental birds and also for the use of their characteristic alarm calls alerting and protecting other livestock from predators. 😍

Day 20: 🎄Gold Laced Wyandotte bantam🎄
These beauties may be little, but they are a naturally hardy type!
The gold laced variety was created by crossing partridge Cochin and gold spangled Hamburg males with silver laced Wyandotte females.

Day 19: ✨Buff Orpington✨
The buff Orpington was the 3rd colour variety created, introduced in 1894, following the black then white!
Prior to the prolific hybrid hen, the Orpington was considered a capable layer, producing around 200 eggs per year! 🍳

Day 16: Light Sussex bantam💫
The Sussex is a very old breed, dating back to the late 1800s!
The light Sussex was made from crossing Brahma, Cochin and silver grey Dorking.
This group will serve a dual purpose come the breeding season.
We will of course be breeding this gorgeous group as a pure breed. However, crossing a light Sussex with a Silkie creates Gold-top hens, who will help us to incubate our Call duck eggs!

Day 12: 🎄Silver Pencil Wyandotte🎄

The silver pencilled came from crossing the partridge Wyandotte with dark Brahma!

Day 11: 🌟Silver Spangled Hamburg🌟
The origin of the Hamburg is a bit of a mystery!
What we do know is, the Hamburg is a stunning breed and a great layer that rarely goes broody.
In fact, not one of our Hamburg hens went broody during this breeding season and were the last hens to finish laying! 🥚
