Pippa has fully embraced her playful side in her new home!

"My wife and I adopted Pippa from you in October and we wanted to just send an email to let you know how she has settled in.

The first day she moved in, she left her crate after about half an hour and hid on a bookshelf behind the arm of a sofa for a few hours. Then we started watching Great British Bakeoff and it must be some Paul Hollywood magic because she came straight out from her hidey-hole and exploring the room and coming to us for fuss.

She has since adopted the personality of a fluffy lunatic!

She loves to play, very content batting conkers around the floor by herself or with her favourite toy; the stick end of a wand chase toy.

She is still highly food motivated and loves fuss when she gets given her daily meals. She also has started becoming a lap cat and will quite often sit on my wife on an evening or next to me during the day (my wife is definitely the favourite!).

She is an absolute treasure and we both adore her and couldn't be happier with her being a part of our family. I could go on for hours about how wonderful she is but I will save you the reading time."

Let's stop and spend a few seconds listening to Nevis' purr.
She was adopted last week 💙

🎆 Fireworks bill update: Unfortunately, the bill reading was interrupted and postponed until late April.

Thank you to everyone who answered our poll and commented on their experiences - it was quite shocking how many reported their pet being reactive, visibly stressed or hiding away. It shows how much of a struggle it is for many pet owners, and that you are not alone.

We'll be talking to our behaviour and veterinary experts and, in the autumn, will bring you the latest advice to get your pet ready for fireworks this winter.

Last week's numbers - 8 cats and 1 dog were rehomed! Including playful Olive who had been left in a box in a park, along with her 3 kittens. She pounced on a chance for a new beginning!

A proposed bill will be debated in Parliament on Friday 17th January to restrict the noise and sale of fireworks. This could have animal welfare benefits. Read our blog about the potential changes and complete our poll to share your views.

A proposed bill will be debated in Parliament on Friday 17th January to restrict the noise and sale of fireworks. Its main purpose is to curb anti-social use, but more regulation will certainly have benefits to pets, livestock and wildlife.

Thank you for all your likes and votes to show you will make a New Year Pet Promise - plus some of you told us about your own personal promise to your pets this year which was heartwarming.
Top promise chosen was letting your dog sniff - followed by the 3-second rule (that is to fuss for 3 seconds, then give them a break to choose if they want to step away or ask for more). Some commented that they didn't know that idea before, let us know if you notice the difference when you try it!

🪴 It's Houseplant Appreciation Day - they make such a wonderful addition to your home, but if you have pets please check the label before you choose, as some can be toxic. Including the one pictured here - Dieffenbachia also known as Leopard Lily.

🎅 We had a visit from Bad Santa… thieves broke into our Charity Shop on George Street in Bath on Christmas night causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and stealing a donation box and raffle takings.

We’re appealing for funds to help us recover from this setback, if you can please donate to https://www.bathcatsanddogshome.org.uk/?form=badsanta

And just as important, if you’re decluttering post-Christmas, consider donating your items to us, we take donations at the shop and at the rehoming centre at Claverton Down. Every contribution helps us continue supporting animals in need.

Happy new year! Our first figures for 2025 - and last week we rehomed 5 dogs and 3 cats, and reunited 1 stray pet with their owner. Included in the adoptions was oldie Beanz, pictured here, who benefitted from our dog fostering programme before adoption.

Simba came to us in a sorry state, covered in scabs and lesions. Beneath his bleeding tail we found cuts, made worse as he bites them due to the pain.

Our veterinary team carefully performed a mid-tail amputation to help relieve his suffering. Fortunately, Simba reacted well to the surgery and had a smooth recovery in the rehoming centre. He's now settling into his new home following his adoption.

We see many animals like Simba with complex medical issues, but - with your
support - we can help more cats and dogs get the treatment they need. Please consider donating to our : https://bathcatsanddogshome.donorsupport.co/page/WinterAppeal2024

Posing for the camera 📸 The lovely Posy celebrated her six month adoption anniversary towards the end of 2024. She's found a lovely home to settle into.

"Posy is doing very well, she settled in very quickly here. We have all fallen in love with her. She is a very curious little girl. We let her out into the garden in August and she has learned how to use the cat flap. She hasn’t worked out that she can jump yet so she hasn’t explored beyond the garden yet. She seems to be quite cautious when it comes to jumping so we’ll see if she figures out there is a world beyond our back garden.

We’ve been having our kitchen done recently and the fitter commented on what a good cat she is. We can only agree with this assessment.

We found the process of adopting from you very easy and it was lovely to see how much everyone at the Cats and Dogs Home really care about the animals. We felt well supported and appreciated the time given for us to meet Posy before we adopted her."

Brrr! Some tips on taking care of your pets during this cold spell.
❄️ Cosy up their beds with an extra blanket and move away from drafts. Make sure fires have a guard and beds do not touch. Cats would love a radiator bed (hammocks that hang on radiators) or igloo beds to snuggle in. If your pet is a window watcher, then add a pad to their spot so they can keep warm on their lookout.
❄️ Some dogs will enjoy having a coat -find a well-fitted cut so they can move and express themselves freely. Not sure if you dog needs one? If they show signs of shivering, tail under, hiding behind you, or cold to touch, then they are feeling the cold. Old, young and short-coated dogs in particular might want something for their walks.
❄️ Afterfreeze (spilt from people topping up their cars or in windcreen solution) is toxic to cats and dogs. Don't allow your dog to drink from car park and road puddles. If you see your cat or dog acting as if drunk (uncoordinated, drowsy, groggy, disorientated) take them to a vet hospital immediately as the first few hours are critical.

What’s your new year resolution for your pet? Like or share your New Year Pet Promise.
• I will play with my cat every day. Play creates a bond with your cat, provides mental stimulation and great exercise.
• I will practice the 3-second rule. When fussing a cat or dog, stop after 3 seconds and give them a chance to choose to ask for more, or they may want to just relax into you or to move away.
• I will let my dog have time to sniff. Smells are everything to dogs, and 10 minutes of sniffing can be as stimulating as an hour’s walk!
