Lameness is the inability to walk normally due to injury, weakness or discomfort. Although the
classic sign of this would be your pet holding their leg in the air and not putting weight on it, some
pets will be prone to hiding their discomfort, and may show more subtle signs.

Although we can often say that a dog or cat is lame from watching them walk, it is a very subjective
assessment, and different people may consider the lameness to be more or less severe. This is where LOAD scoring comes in.

LOAD scoring is a reliable and repeatable way to identify if a dog has signs of joint disease. You can find
out more about the process here in our blog: https://bit.ly/4izopYY

Cruciate disease refers to partial or complete rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. The primary symptom of cruciate rupture is limping on the affected hind leg.

In most patients, this limp appears suddenly, and is such that the leg is not used at all. As cruciate disease is usually a degenerative process, sometimes the ligament becomes gradually weaker, which may be seen as an intermittent limp or stiffness.

Toxins your pet should avoid in autumn

Autumn Pet Toxins: Acorns

Acorns are also a choking hazard and can cause intestinal damage if ingested whole. Signs of acorn poisoning to look for include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and dehydration. In rare cases, untreated incidents of acorn poisoning have led to kidney and liver failure, so always speak to your vet as soon as possible if you suspect your pet has ingested acorns.

Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition in dogs. This is usually due to genetic predisposition and the dysplasia develops or worsens as the dog grows.

Hip dysplasia can occur in any breed of dog. It is typically associated with large breeds such as Labradors, German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Saint Bernards, but is increasingly being diagnosed in smaller breeds such as French Bulldogs.

Pet insurance or a preventative healthcare plan?

Pet insurance can cover unexpected accidents or illnesses which may come your pets way.

Preventative healthcare schemes focus on keeping your pet healthy and protected on an everyday basis. For example, covering their vaccinations, parasite control and health checks.

The autumn equinox falls on Monday 22 September and marks the start of autumn, when day and night are equal. It’s a seasonal shift that can affect your pet’s routine, energy levels and outdoor habits.

How does the autumn equinox affect your pet?🐶🐱

As the seasons shift, your dog might enjoy longer walks in the cooler weather. While you're out and about, keep an eye out for seasonal hazards like mushrooms, antifreeze and ticks.

Cats, on the other hand, may start spending more time indoors, seeking warmth and comfort. With less outdoor roaming, it’s important to keep them mentally stimulated: think cosy hideouts, interactive toys or window perches to watch the falling leaves. 🍂

Vaccines do more than just protect — they supercharge your pet’s immune system, shielding them from potentially life-threatening infectious diseases. Plus, every vaccination appointment includes a thorough health check from nose to tail, giving you peace of mind that your pet is happy, healthy, and thriving.

If it’s been over a year since their last jab, good news — it’s not too late. You can still book their booster without having to restart the course. But if they’re more than 3 months overdue, they’ll need to begin a full vaccination course again. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Join Our Vaccine Catch-Up Campaign!

Give your furry friend the care they need! Pay for the first overdue vaccine, and we’ll cover the second, ensuring their safety at an affordable price.

Let’s keep your furry friend safe, healthy, and ready for all of life’s adventures. Book today!

Toxins your pet should avoid in autumn

Autumn Pet Toxins: Horse Chestnuts (conkers)

The toxic ingredient in conkers is also found in the leaves and bark of the tree, so keep an eye out to make sure your pet doesn't eat these either. Conkers are also a choking hazard, and can potentially cause bowel obstructions if swallowed whole, which may require emergency surgery. Signs to look for in your
pet include vomiting and diarrhoea, excessive drooling, excessive thirst or reduced appetite. In severe cases, ingestion can cause muscle tremors or seizures.
