Always fascinated to see how modified our rivers are through our towns. This is the Bristol Frome in Yate (dating back to 1882) overlaid on current mapping.

Some before and after photos of our Merriott Stream restoration project completed in the autumn. After such a wet winter it was a relief to see it holding up really well. The stream used to flow in a 300m long culvert, by opening it up we’ve restored lost floodplain connection, helping to reduce flood risk downstream and the new fish passes have restored connectivity to previously cut off habitat upstream…just need a few beavers to move in now🦫 🤪. ,

It’s a very sad day to hear our new monarch King Charles, a globally respected figure on environmental issues, has been ‘ordered’ by the UK government not to attend the COP27 climate summit in Egypt.

It’s been a busy few months with yet another active site under construction in Somerset where we are lowering the riverbanks to reconnect the stream with its floodplain. ,

This is the bit I love. Seeing all our hard work put into reality. This is the Merriott stream finally being restored from a pipe into a naturalised channel.

Interesting week which has taken me to look at some of the worst bank erosion I have ever seen here in the UK. Sadly the photos don’t do the scale justice. This is yet more evidence of how, over many decades, the decisions we have made to develop on our floodplains without understanding the impacts has caused this river to become increasingly confined and, as a result, exceptionally destructive.

I found myself in north London last week so took the opportunity to visit a Hydro-Morph designed scheme to open up a stream that had been contained within a pipe through the park. It’s really nice to see the result including vastly improved habitat and amenity for the local community. Importantly the new channel and attenuation pond will help to slow winter flows to reduce flooding downstream. Win win!!

The first two photos are from 2018 (before the works were undertaken) showing the manhole above the culverted watercourse, which flooded in 2018. The following photos show the completed new channel and pond.

Fabulous day out with Prof Colin Thorn, Sabine McEwan from FWAG and Alex Hughes yesterday on the Merriott Stream in Somerset. It’s very exciting when plans to restore a stream that has been enclosed in a pipe for 100s of years start to take shape.
