Today is International Women's Day. We invite you to join us to celebrate the strong, caring & brilliant women in the veterinary profession.
It wasn’t until 1922 that the first woman, Aileen Cust, achieved MRCVS status, three years after the S*x Disqualification Act of 1919 which allowed women to enter the profession. Now, 100 years later, women make up the vast majority of veterinary applicants and qualified veterinary surgeons & over 95% of veterinary nurses!
So here’s to our awesome team at Bath Vet Referrals & here’s to strong women everywhere - ‘May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.’

To celebrate our commitment to providing innovative and excellent patient care we have decided to rebrand.

Since opening, we have become a well-respected multidisciplinary referral centre situated in the South West of England. Our dedicated team of knowledgeable and professional referral clinicians and experienced nursing team offer an extensive referral service.

Our current brand has offered comfort and reassurance to many, however, after careful consideration we have decided to take steps to refresh our brand identity and to formally change our name to Bath Vet Referrals. These changes represent our desire to evolve and progress; our new branding also pays homage to Bath itself.

As of Autumn 2022, our new brand identity will gradually take hold. Our services, facilities and commitment will remain the same.

We are also delighted to announce that the Small Animal Rehabilitation Centre will now form part of the Bath Vet Referrals service. Formerly known as Bath Canine Hydrotherapy, the service will remain located at 494 Wellsway, Bath BA2 2UD. More information can be found via our website https://www.bathvetreferrals.co.uk/ .

The rebrand is a true demonstration of Bath Vet Referrals continual growth and reflects the hospital’s spirit and desire to offer a progressive and distinctive referral service.

Please join us in congratulating Cathy Woodlands who is IVC Evidensia's first Infection Prevention and Control Ambassador which has earned her the 2022 IVC Evidensia Brilliant People People Award in the We Dare: Clinical category.

Cathy became IVC Evidensia's first Infection Prevention and Control ambassador in Spring 2020 at exactly the same time as the pandemic arrived in the UK. To support our practices with infection prevention and control and to address the concerns of antibiotic resistance the UK and Europe, IVC Evidensia aimed to build a program with guidelines, tools and resources accessible to all. The initial pilot program involved a small cohort of six practices in the UK alongside three practices in Sweden, Finland, The Netherlands and Germany.
As a new role for nurses in our practices, Cathy stepped into the unknown and brought her experience and enthusiasm as a Patient Safety Board member to develop the role of IPC Ambassador at a local level in practice and as part of the national and international IPC team.
Cathy met many challenges that are often experienced when making changes in an established team with perseverance and positivity. She communicated effectively with her practice team, leading the development of the practice IPC guidelines resulting in Bath Vet Group being the very first IVC Evidensia practice in the UK to be receive a Silver IPC Certification. Cathy dared to embrace the unknown, showing her care for patient safety, staff and client wellbeing and global health issues, coming up with creative innovations and sharing best practice and knowledge with her practice team.

We will complete a gait assessment and physical examination.

Meet Sarah Nehammer she is our fantastic physiotherapist based at Bath Canine Hydrotherapy which is part of Bath Vet Referrals.

Sarah qualified as a human physiotherapist originally in 2004 before studying veterinary physiotherapy and working at the Royal Dick school of veterinary studies in Edinburgh to specialise working in physiotherapy and hydrotherapy with dogs, cats and even rabbits! She is passionate about improving the quality of life of small animals with musculoskeletal or neurological acute or chronic conditions, including those recovering following surgery. In her spare time alongside her work as a human physiotherapist, she enjoys spending time hiking with her spaniel Rosie, live music and lets out a showman's wagon for glampers.

Meet Ella,
Ella joined the team at Bath Canine Hydrotherapy which is part of Bath Vet Referrals in November 2021 as a Referral Administrator having graduated from RVC with a BSc in summer 2021. She really enjoys her role of professional communication with vets and clients and takes a huge interest in the clinical aspects of cases. She is always striving to learn more and is especially fascinated in advanced imaging (CT and MRI). Outside of work Ella is very active by training for triathlons and greatly enjoys practicing a variety of instruments. She is also very blessed to have two lovely furry friends in her life, Ronnie the gorgeous fox red Labrador and Gini the grumpy tabby cat.

Meet Poppy, she is a lovely little Tibetan Terrier Cross. She has visited us for a course of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy for treatment of a sore hind limb, where she has responded well and is moving comfortably. Sarah has given her owners some exercises to continue with at home, to help maintain her improved muscle strength. We wish her all the best.

Happy International Women's Day from Bath Canine Hydrotherapy

Willow’s journey with Bath Canine Hydrotherapy

Willow is a lovely gentle 10-year-old Lurcher owned by Sophie and Joe, who came to Bath Canine Hydrotherapy for physiotherapy and hydrotherapy in mid December 2021 approximately 2 weeks after a sudden onset of non-ambulatory tetraparesis where she had a C4/5 hydrated disc extrusion with moderate spinal cord compression. An investigation including MRI had been performed by a neurology Specialist at another referral centre, and conservative management had been advised but with a plan to consider decompressive surgery if further deterioration occurred. She was struggling to lift her head to eat her food, was not able to sit or stand up or walk. She had previously enjoyed long walks, running around and playing with her daughter Whisper but was no longer able to do any of these activities. She was obviously feeling quite low and took great comfort in her paw being stroked.

She has now had regular physiotherapy and underwater treadmill hydrotherapy sessions at Bath Canine Hydrotherapy and her owners Sophie and Joe are dedicated to completing Willow’s daily physiotherapy exercises at home which has resulted in Willow making encouraging progress.

As of the start of February, she can now walk for at least 15 minutes by herself, has become playful and cheeky and wanting to play with her daughter again. Willow continues to get stronger and her physiotherapy exercises have been specifically developed to challenge her balance, strength and joint flexibility and encourage her on her journey to returning to having fun and more of a normal, happy dog life.

*** COVID-19 UPDATE ***
Following the decision in England to remove legal COVID-19 restrictions on Monday 19th July, we & our large, predominantly young team, have considered what we feel is the best way forward. Our team contains many that are not yet fully vaccinated, & some that are clinically vulnerable, so to ensure both staff and client safety, we have decided to continue with our current level of COVID measures, with the intention of reviewing again at the end of the summer.
- We are very happy to have 1 client in the building with their pet during consultations. Please give us a call when you arrive in the carpark and we will direct you further.
- We require our clients to continue to wear face masks, hand sanitise and maintain social distancing while in the practice. For any clients (except for those exempt), who prefer not to wear a mask, we will conduct the consultation outside with you and your pet.
We are very conscious that if members of our team develops COVID-19, then the service we can provide to you & your pets will be significantly reduced. To help maintain our veterinary provision, and to protect the welfare of our patients, we hope you understand why we need to continue to maintain a high standard of virus security

Meet Harriet

Harriet Bice is one of our amazing Referral Administrators.
Harriet joined the group in 2012 as an out of hours’ receptionist. Harriet became referral administrator in 2013 where her main role is to liaise with referring practices and their clients to arrange referral appointments. Outside of work she enjoys going on long walks and adventures with her husband, son and Doberman Ernie.
