Come and join me and other speakers for the free ‘ Summer of Love’ event, hosted by Pet Remedy. A whole season committed to celebrating our love for dogs and promoting to the general public the very latest methods and understanding in dog training, behaviour and welfare. The underlying theme is communicating the importance of compassion and emotional wellbeing in the education and support of our dogs.

I have had the pleasure of contributing a video on ACE Free Work towards this event - please share the information on your social media if you can so we can get as many of the general public to engage with all the activities Pet Remedy have planned over the next couple of months.

There is also an opportunity for those in the UK to nominate colleagues in the Summer of Love awards – categories are for Trainer, Vet, Groomer, Rescue worker, Volunteer. This is a chance to recognise all those that are working to hard to make a difference in dog welfare and wellbeing.

The educational videos go live in August, but there is lots to get involved with now 😊

My amACEing team and I are taking a break from 12pm today until January 3rd.

It has been another ACE year for us all. We have connected with thousands of people around the world who have discovered peACEful ways of connecting with the animals who grace their lives, and likeminded colleagues who share our core values. We are so lucky to do what we do.

We will be flexing and adapting our online content in 2023 to help animals and their caregivers/guardians navigate the challenges of the current economic struggles. Please let us know how we can support you, and/or your clients in the coming months. We are passionate about sharing the joy of ACE and ensuring this methodology is accessible to all.

Thank you to all who joined us on an ACE Adventure in 2022. Our deepest gratitude, as always, goes to the dogs who continue to shape ACE Free Work. It has been a life enhancing experience for so many animals in the care of outstanding guardians and dedicated caregivers supporting animals in rescue. ACE has helped save lives too.

Wishing you all a peACEful break in the company of those you love.

We are prepping for the increasing heat, and will be occupied caring for our old ponies to ensure their needs are met over the next two days - we won't be in the office that much during the day, even though we have air conditioning here.

As it is going to be far too hot for our Canine Office Assistant we are changing our working hours to ensure Hendrix can stay at home. We will be in the office in the early morning, and towards the end of the day.

Please bear with us if you are trying to get hold of us over the next two days.

We've had an amACEing time on our in-person workshops at Tilley Farm. As always, each attending dog adds new Free Work layers.

Free Work helps to engage all the senses - including proprioception and vestibular balance. When a guardian shares struggles their dog might have in some aspects of their life, my first thoughts are usually 'I wonder how this dog moves? How might he organise his body at rest? What is his habitual posture? What other details in his glorious coat and body am I going to see?' Emotional and physical well-being and balance are linked.

What we saw in some of our sensitive visitors was tension around the shoulders and upper thoracic spine, and an inability to stand in balance with a leg at each corner (for want of a better description). A posture that is common in dogs who find some aspects of the human world a tad overwhelming. A posture that can also be linked to underlying pain.

This common postural pattern is often accompanied by touch, noise, and sight sensitivity; sensitivity to the sight and sound of something moving in the environment, sensitivity to contact from certain textures, and sensitivity to contact from the human hand. And so, the peACEful steps to building confidence and gradually expanding a dog's banking history begins.

The Free Work layouts are shaped by what we see - not what we believe may be happening. And our focus is on income for the dog, not outcome. One particular dog was worried by noise and movement but enjoyed foraging and so the snuffle tray was born. It is a simple (new) cat litter tray filled with mini snuffle mats - a dear friend makes them for me as they are so useful when taking modified and micro Free Work layouts into different environments. This gave the sensitive dog the opportunity to root through lightweight textures that the dog could move, but didn't really make much noise. The ball pool would have been too much at first.

It has been so popular with other visiting dogs, that it is now a Free Work 'thing'. These micro snuffle mats have also been put in piles on the floor for smaller dogs to explore - that set up has also been a hit.

If you are supporting a young or sensitive dog think of ways you can expand a dog's banking history in the familiar framework of ACE Free Work. We can add more layers to this safe foundation in the security of his home.

Thank you to Victoria Stilwell and the wonderful VSA team for another incredible Dog Behaviour Conference.

Thank you for inviting me to share my passion, and for all you do to make the world and better place for dogs, and those whose lives are enriched through their rewarding company.

Thank you to all the other speakers and participants too. There is always so much to share, and so much to learn. What an inspiring three days it has been.

Together we can help more dogs and their guardians fall in love with learning.

Looking forward to teaching this webinar tonight.

The content will cover ACE techniques including ACE Observations and ACE Free Work to help you:

Identify how your sensitive dog organises his body
Recognise when his posture starts to change
How coat patterns can be a sign of body tension
The link between posture, pain and behaviour
How your dog's sleeping posture, the set of his ears and tail, his coat patterns and toileting habits all form part of the bigger picture
How ACE Free Work can help highlight small details that might have been overlooked
How you can find decompressors that helps your dog reset, rebalance and release
ACE Free Work also provides a familiar foundation on which all further learning can be built. It helps to identify patterns and habits in our canine companions, and in ourselves.
Everything we could want to know about a dog is there in front of us. We just need to know what to look for, and consider what we can change in the way we live and interact with our sensitive four legged friends.

Clarity begins at home.

Please join ACE Connections if you aren't already a member and would like to be informed of the ACE Rescue Mission webinar that is being planned.

ACE Mission Rescue

I have just finished delivering a wonderful and rewarding online course for an animal welfare organisation, with my dear friend and colleague ACE Instructor Sarah Whiffen.
ACE Free Work and ACE techniques offer so many ways to support animals in care whilst waiting for a new home. It is the dogs in shelters that have shaped so much of what ACE is today. They have been my greatest teachers by far.

ACE Free Work can be so beneficial for shelter dogs for several reasons including, but not limited to:

A rewarding enrichment activity on it's own

As part of an on-going assessment

To enable the dog to gather data

To improve caregiver observations, and give new insights to help understand the needs of each individual dog

To help format training and behaviour modifcation plans

For dog to dog introductions

As a way of expanding a dog's world by introducing novel sights, scents, and sounds at a pace to suit the individual dogs within a familiar framework

Building confidence

Lowering arousal

As a foundation for all other learning including loose lead walking
To help a dog remain calmer and more engaged with the caregiver whilst moving around on site, instead of scanning the environment for other people/animals etc.

To help establish a Contact Contract

To introduce new caregivers following the ACE First Date approach

To introduce a potential adopter

As an easily transferable activity that can be taken back into the kennel, different locations, and also a new home

Who would be interested in a webinar on ACE Mission Rescue? We can put together an evening talk, which will be backed up with online content to help support the dogs in your care.

We'll keep the cost as low as we can - just want to know if this will be helpful/of interest to those of you who work in shelters.

If you are interested in learning more about the potential webinar, please join ACE Connections if you aren't already a member as further details will be posted in the group.

Tilley Farm

Tilley Farm is a ninety acre property on the outskirts of Bath.

It is a sanctuary for our rescued, horses and donkeys and home to Animal Centred Education. The farm was purchased in 2001 and has evolved over the years to become a haven for wildlife and a peaceful learning environment for humans, and animals.
