🧠 Cognition Clinic 🧠

Last week Lets Play Dog Training hosted Endeavour Canine for a cognition testing workshop and I had the absolute pleasure of joining 🧠🤓

This workshop is designed to understand more about how our dogs learn, so we can then apply this to our training 🌟🌭

It was SOOOO fantastic to watch the dogs focus and process the tasks which revealed their problem solving abilities and how high their memory is 🪄💫

We got some really amazing insights into the dogs personalities and it was just brilliant to see their partnerships with their owners as they worked through each task 💖☀️

Today we carried on driving by two beaches as they were too busy with off lead dogs - a conscious decision to help have a stress free day 💕

We got to the third beach, the car park was quiet, a good sign, so we pottered on down 🏖

After a lovely half hour of Merlin dipping his toes and splashing in the waves we decided to head back to the car - there was an off lead dog up ahead, so the timing felt right 🌊

We moved from the water up the bay, swapped our long line to our small lead and headed up into the dunes - pretty clear signs we were heading away and not looking to interact 🫶

The off lead dog rushed to approach and I asked the owner if they would mind recalling their dog please - the owner didn't, and I then received an absolute tirade of swears and abuse about how I just needed to 'socialise my dog' 🤬

Dogs may be on lead for a variety of reasons! They may be...

💛 Unwell⁣
💛 Recovering from surgery
💛 Struggling physically
💛 In pain or discomfort
💛 Older
💛 Young and learning
💛 In season⁣
💛 In training⁣
💛 Nervous⁣
💛 Recovering from a stressful experience⁣
💛 A new rescue dog⁣
💛 Building a strong recall
💛 Working through behaviour issues
💛 Being walked by someone other than the owner⁣

And this isn't even considering all of the reasons why an owner may not want to interact - in a rush, disability, headspace - because you simply don't want to 💖

So it really is a lot more complex than simply 'socialising your dog' 😬

Unless you have owned a dog that needs more space, it can be hard to understand how an action like this impacts someone else! One unexpected interaction with a dog or person can unfortunately sometimes set back months of work if you're managing 'reactive' behaviours 😪⁣

So, putting our positive pants back on...

⚠️ See an on lead dog?
⚠️ Stop! ⁣
⚠️ Think! ⁣
⚠️ Recall your dog! ⁣
⚠️ Give more space 💛💛💛 ⁣

It doesn't matter why your dog needs to be recalled...a space ship could be about to land on top of them, or the moon could be about to fall from the sky 👽🌛

If you are unable to reliably recall your dog, they should be kept on lead in these situations to prevent any harm to your dog, and any future repercussions on you both ⚖️

So if you're asked to recall your dog, BE KIND, and take a second to think of the other owner and dog and what they may be working through ❤️‍🩹

P.S. - we're totally fine ✨️ I just didn't want an unfamiliar dog jumping on Merlin whilst he's still physically recovering 💜

We are really excited to be hosting Endeavour Canine for a two day Canine Cognition Workshop. There is ONE handler space that has become available and we do have spectator places available if you would like to come and see this totally fascinating way to get to know your dog let us know!
These cognition tests help you to learn crucial information about your dog which will give you an in-depth understanding of how they learn and perceive the world around them. This will allow you to tailor your training to work better as a team and make the most of whatever journey you wish to take together.
The tests will explore aspects such as.....
🐾 is your dog strong on memory?
🐾 is your dog a problem solver?
🐾 is your dog left or right pawed?
🐾 does your dog follow human gestures?
The Canine Cognition Tests are based on the research by Cameron Ford of Ford K9 and Brian Hare, conducted with Duke University, in the US. These tests were initial developed to inform the selection of operational detection dogs but the information gained is invaluable for any dog and their handler, regardless of discipline.
The clinic will be delivered by Georgie Armstrong - the only Ford K9 Cognition instructor in the UK. Georgie has a rich background in many different scent based disciplines, having started her training in operational work over 8 years ago. ✨️ The Best Teachers are Learners ✨️

As a dog behaviourist and trainer, I help humans to change their dog's behaviour 🤝

It's my job to inspire, motivate and help dog guardians achieve their goals - tracking progress and outcomes - alongside demonstrating good subject area knowledge 🌟

I plan and teach structured lessons, flexibly adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of my clients, all whilst creating a safe and fun learning environment 💓

So as a teacher... I love learning!!! 🤓 Researching, reading and finding all those golden nuggets of information or new ways to tell a story that really help owners to understand their dog...info that practically translates into how we can create that change together ✨️

One of the requirements of being a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) is that I log and submit a minimum of 30 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), which includes any courses, seminars or workshops for my own personal development - but also includes supporting the development of other industry professionals too - helping others grow 🌻

Ensuring that I'm keeping my knowledge tip top and up to date with the ever progressing science - helps bring the newest info to you, as dog guardians 🐕

❤️‍🩹 Regenerative Medicine ❤️‍🩹

If you've been here a little while you'll know that Magic Merlin lives with some health conditions ❤️‍🩹

Back in March we started the journey of stem cell therapy in the hope of helping his poorly joints 💕

Merlin had a procedure to harvest fat cells from his abdomen. These cells were then cultured in the lab for a few weeks to isolate the stem cells. When the cells were ready, they were then injected into all the different areas of his body that needed it 💖

Stem cells are amazing and can develop into different types of tissues and can activate surrounding cells to aid in wound healing and tissue repair 🪄

After a period of rest (and lots of enrichment and brain training 😅🧠), slowly building up exercise alongside weekly laser therapy sessions, today we had our 6 week check up! The amazing vets at Greenside were very pleased with the progress we've made so far 🥺🌟

From a behaviour perspective, Merlin has got his spark back ✨️🥺 his mood has improved, he is more playful, happy to go on walks and get into the car thanks to being in less discomfort 💛

Today was really emotional looking back on how far we've come and although we're still on a journey with more treatments needed, the future is feeling much brighter for my super brave little bean ✨️💛🌟☀️

For a rescue dog who has always struggled with vet handling, I'm ✨️super ✨️ proud of us getting to this stage using cooperative care and some blooming amazingly considerate and animal centred vet professionals 🥺

Shout out to our fab GP vets Riverside Vet and Charlotte the physio who have been with us every step of Merlin's journey too - thank you for your advice, patience and embracing our pocket snuffle mat and rainbow table to help sessions be as positive as they can be - it really does take a village 🥺🏘💜

These beautiful sisters and their guardians have been working hard 💪🌟✨️

We've been working on promoting all things calm at home and building the confidence to do things independently of each other 💕

Most people think training two dogs is double the work...but it's actually three times as much training!! Plans involve training each dog alone and then training them together - so hats off to any multi-dog households working through training 🐾🏠

🔺️ Pyramid of Needs 🔺️

Linda Michaels adapted Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for dogs, which helps us really understand what our dogs need from their guardians 💫

It can be SO tempting to jump straight to training - BUT that's right at the top of the pyramid - before we get there we need to establish if we're meeting each of the lower stages of the Pyramid of Needs first 💜

✨️ Biological Needs ✨️
Are all basic needs met? Does diet support their needs? A healthy gut supports brain function! Water intake ok? A safe and undisturbed place to rest & sleep? What is their exercise schedule? Does that match their life stage & 'breed needs'? Do they have any health issues? How do these impact them day to day? Are they able to be seen safely by the vet? 🩺

✨️ Emotional Needs ✨️
Just as important as physical needs - have we created an environment in which our dog feels safe & able to learn? Do they have a secure & trusting relationship with their guardians? Are you consistent with your interactions, guidance & house rules? 😊

✨️ Social Needs ✨️
Does your dog feel safe to explore their environment? Do they have nice interactions with other humans & dogs? Developing social skills can provide appropriate outlets to play & bond ⚽️

✨️ Force-Free Training Needs ✨️
Nobody can learn when they’re frightened & everybody can learn when teaching is made fun! Our dogs need their training sessions to be fun! What equipment are they wearing? Is this contributing to how they feel? Teaching your dog with kindness will help meet this need 💖

Once we have ensured the first 4 stages of needs have been met - we can then look at supporting cognitive needs!

✨️Cognitive Needs ✨️
Does your dog have the opportunity to problem solve & experience new things? Sniffaris? Adventures? Do they know tricks that are just for fun? Do they have enrichment? Are they able to learn new skills?

Ensuring you have a strong & stable base on the pyramid will promote success with your training & behaviour plans 💜 if you are getting stuck - it's worth revisiting the earlier steps of your pyramid to double check there isn't a need that's lacking & preventing you from progressing & growing 🌻🌻🌻

Tonight our Magic Mutts put their skills to the test in our magic themed trick workshop 🤩🤩 our dogs were sorted into houses (Gryffindogs ❤️ or Hufflepugs 💛) and from confusion charms to evil curses, levitation and dog quiddich, we had it all! Our marvellous wizarding and witching mutts put on a truly spell binding show 🤩⚡🧙‍♂️

Massive well done to everyone, lots of impressive magic fun this evening 🤩🌟🐶🐾🧙‍♂️⚡

Met this little chap last summer and we finished our sessions together at the start of this year!

Did you know that a Behaviour Package lasts anywhere between 6-9 months?! We'll have our initial session and then meet a further two times with regular WhatsApp and email support in between sessions! The sessions are led by you and your dog - working in partnership with your vet, we're often working through a process to help us gather as much info as possible to help guide you through any behaviour quirks 💜

🖤🤍🩶 ⁣The Collie Collective 🖤🤍🩶

I've lived with collies for a very long time 🥰💜

The dog that started it all was Ben - he was my grandparents dog when I was growing up and he is responsible for the collie lifestyle 😂💜

Archie was a working collie from a farm - bred to herd sheep 🐑 our world turned upside down as we navigated life with a working dog in a pet home! He's the reason I do this job today 🐾⁣
⁣
My first rescue was Lexa 💕 Lexa's parents were 'high drive' dogs trained in search and rescue! She had a colourful life before finding her way to me as at 11 years old with lots of behaviour quirks associated with herders ⚡️

I don't know much about Merlin's background, we rescued him when he found his way to rescue at 1 year old, but he definitely shows some behaviours associated with herding and chasing 💛⁣

Herding breeds are selected for vigilance and to be hypersensitive to change! They are bred to work very closely with one handler and quickly take action when faced with changes in their environment 💥
⁣
When we bring working dogs into pet dog homes we have to understand what makes them tick! They are wired as herding dogs and 'organising' things helps them feel safe 💕 ⁣
⁣
Working breeds look to us for more information so we have to step up and provide them with the guidance, direction and answers to their questions about city life 🚗⁣
⁣
Collies are sensitive souls who need predictability and structure to feel safe ♥️ ⁣
⁣
By channeling those natural instincts, providing safe outlets for behaviour and meeting their needs, we can safely integrate working dogs into our lives 🌟🌟🌟⁣

We really are very fortunate to have access to so many secure fields around the central belt ✨️

When I first started in the industry, secure fields didn't really exist and their growth has been a lifeline for so many 🥺✨️

So whether your dog is:

❤️ Anxious on walks ❤️
💛 Practicing their recall 💛
🧡 A new rescue dog 🧡
💚 Showing 'reactive' behaviours 💚

Secure fields can be a crucial part of that story 💕

Merlin is on restricted exercise for the next few weeks following some medical treatment, so today we did our short potter in a secure field then rested on our settle mat with a chew - taking in the new sniffs all around ❤️‍🩹

Felt very fortunate to have that safe space where he can exist peacefully and not do anything that might set back recovery - being outside together again felt like a taste of what's to come in the future too 🌟 🌟🌟

💜 Training Top Tips 💜

Did you know when teaching new behaviours, or in distracting environments, it's important to use high value treats to achieve results...the payment has to be worth the task 😁 imagine you went to work and either didn't get paid or got paid very little...you'd be less likely to want to repeat the
task again 💲

When working with a dog it's important to carry out a 'Taste Test' to find out what our dogs like best to achieve the best results 😁🌟

If I ate pizza every night for the rest of my life...it may eventually become a bit too much 🤢 so its important to remember to repeat Taste Tests regularly so you're offering new and interesting flavours to your dog to keep things exciting 😍

There may be many things that influence your dog's choices around their favourite treats such as tastes and textures - BUT also how we deliver the food! Do we roll it to them, scatter on the ground, hide it, does the dog lick it?

All of these are important tools in our toolkit for knowing what our dogs like and how we can get the most out of behaviours 😍

I'll maybe throw treats if I'm keen for Merlin to bounce back to me if we're working on a recall game...but I might scatter treats if I'm working on a dog being calm around something in the environment...and I might use licking to help a dog that's gone over threshold come back down 👅👃
