We've been busy refreshing our apiary area with our bags of hardwood chips, ready for our first Beekeeping course this weekend. These are ideal for all sorts of areas, not just chicken runs!

Our van is usually out and about, delivering in the local area on a Friday.

Our delivery round extends up to 20 miles from site with orders from further afield welcomed, these are dispatched by courier, doing our best to get everyone’s items to them within 3-5 working days.

We deliver in our local area using our electric van. Please select local delivery at the checkout. and add any special delivery needs to the comments box on your order.

Delivery charges are as follows and will be calculated once your delivery address has been added. Please add a different delivery address if applicable. The minimum spend per order for local delivery is £20.

On Saturday 29 March we have two half-day workshops here at Mantel Farm:

In the morning we have a Bee Craft Workshop. This is a lovely, fun course introducing crafts made from honey and wax: Come and learn how to make beautiful, natural moisture cream, then have a go at rolling colourful beeswax candles, all in a relaxing environment. 3 hours £48pp

In the afternoon we will be joined by . This two-hour course will go through the process of making bath bombs, discussing the options of toppings, colours and different fragrances. Mollie will go through the care and properties of different essential oils and what blends will make your bath benefit the mind the most. She will also explain the characteristics and skin benefits of the different carrier oils.
You will then have a chance to make your own bath bombs, mixing the ingredients into a paste, adding colours, fragrances, and botanicals of your choice. We will then pop the mix into the moulds to complete the process. 2 hours £38pp

Avian Influenza; the latest situation and Defra requirements...

Cases of Avian Influenza are increasing across the Country and with a confirmed case nearby it is essential we all follow strict biosecurity to protect our flocks.

Firstly our thoughts go to the premises near Rye that has a confirmed case, being a small business it has no doubt had a huge impact on them and it brings home what it would mean to us, our hens, and our business should it happen here at Mantel Farm.

Many of the cases are occurring in the large commercial flocks but our wild birds are also suffering badly, so increasing the risk of the disease spreading to our back garden flocks. Although the national prevention zone does not require hens to be housed, it does require enhanced biosecurity and steps to minimise contact with wild birds (if you are within the 3km protection zone around Rye then your hens will need to be housed).

So, having spent much time reading between the many pages on the Defra website! we have tried to put together a simple guide for what to do, along with links to the relevant sections of the Defra regulations. This guide can be found in the help and advice section on our website, with links below and on our website's home page.
