We've had a few messages recently asking how to deal with a broody hen. This article from our 'help and advice' page may be of use 🐣:

Before we attempt to get to grips with the above, a quick definition of ‘broody’ would be a good idea:

We have just two more Intensive Bee Keeping Courses for this year:

6 and 7 September 🐝
12 and 13 October 🐝

An intensive course to get you started, explaining all about the honeybee, helping you choose your hive and equipment, how and where to set up your apiary, the bees management, and pests and diseases. Not forgetting when and how to extract that lovely honey. Full details on the website.

Our honey cake always goes down well with everyone on our courses🐝. Here's the recipe:

We had a visitor here at the weekend!🐍
We were alerted by a commotion in the chicken barn and found this grass snake slithering along the corridor. It was very lucky to have escaped the chickens as they certainly would have killed it! It was excreting a very strong smell (resembling rotting flesh) which apparently they do when in distress🤮 We carefully removed it from the barn and placed it in the undergrowth in a quiet area of the farm.🐍

Our next Garden Chicken Keeping Course is this coming Saturday 27 July from 9-30 to 4-30.

An informal day spent with others interested in chicken keeping. Our courses are limited to small groups and you will gain a wealth of information from a highly experienced chicken keeper. There is also a chance to see a sample of the different hens and equipment available, and you will receive a useful pack of course notes to take away.

A few warm, sunny days in a year of late swarming could trigger a spike this week.
Keep a close eye on higher risk colonies.

90% of bee species are solitary bees and along with other pollinating animals their hard work is responsible for at least one in every three mouthfuls we eat. However, like many species, they are under threat and need our help.
