Just a reminder of some important changes to our out-of-hours veterinary service which comes in to place this evening (Wednesday 1st May) and what to do if your pet needs emergency Veterinary care at night, over the weekend or on bank holidays, when our practice is closed.

The decision to make these changes has not been taken lightly and has been driven by a shortage of vets – not just locally but nationally. Our current system has regrettably become unsustainable.

At Senlac Veterinary Centre, we know your pets are part of your family and our priority is, and always will be, to ensure they have access to the very best care, no matter what time of day or night it is. For this reason, from May 1st 2024 we are making a change to our out-of-hours provision, partnering with Vets Now, a dedicated pet emergency service which provides expert pet emergency care when we are closed.

Vets Now is the pet care equivalent of an accident and emergency service and the leading provider of pet emergency care in the UK. Based at 60 locations nationwide, their vets and vet nurses respond to 200,000 pet emergencies every year.

Moreover, their veterinary teams are specially trained in emergency and critical care and work only out of hours, through the night, at weekends and on bank holidays. That means they are ready and waiting to see you and your pet, whether it’s in the early hours of the morning or halfway through Sunday lunch.

During our normal opening hours (8:30-7 Mon-Fri and 9-12:45 Sat), there will be no change in our service. We will continue to provide you and your pet with the highest standards of veterinary care. However, if your pet falls ill when we are closed, you can call the Vets Now team, via our normal phone number, who will be happy to talk through your concerns. A video vet consult is available up to 11pm and in person consultations would be at Ashford, Eastbourne or Tunbridge Wells at your preference.

At Senlac Veterinary Centre. We are proud to be working with Vets Now and believe this new partnership offers you and your pet the best level of care for both day and night.

We have had a positive case of Lungworm within practice this week, on a non-symptomatic patient who was in for routine surgery!!

Lungworm is a parasitic worm which affects dogs, spread by the ingestion of slugs and snails, although they don't have to physically ingest the actual slug or snail it can be spread simply through the ingestion of the 'Slime' trail left behind by them. Eating grass, rummaging in undergrowth and drinking from puddles is all that is required for your pets to become infected with Lungworm.

An infected patient often shows no sign of being infected and it can be fatal! Although some common signs of a dog infected with Lungworm are cardiac or respiratory disease such as coughing and also spontaneous haemorrhage of organs and excessive bleeding of wounds due to the bloods lack of clotting factors! Due to the risk of haemorrhage we ask all patients to be treated for Lungworm before coming in for surgery, although we can perform a quick blood test in house.
Lungworm treatment is included in our newly launched Health Care Plan.
If you have any questions regarding Lungworm or our health care plan please give us a call for advice.
