Unpopular dog trainer opinion:

If we spent more time just being with our dogs — learning their needs, their likes, their worries — instead of constantly pushing them to meet our expectations, we would need to train them less.

So many behavior struggles come from unmet needs: lack of mental stimulation, choice, decompression time, or proper outlets for natural behaviors like sniffing or chewing.

Training is important, but connection is vital.

When you prioritize your dog's needs, training becomes easier because you're working with your dog, not against them.

What’s one way you can connect more with your dog this week?

🥵Keep Your Dog Safe in Warm Weather🌞

As temperatures rise, dogs are at risk of heatstroke and dehydration. Here’s how to keep your dog safe this summer:

1. Test the Pavement
Place your hand on the surface for 5–7 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws! Pavement can be up to 20°C hotter than air temperature (Mishra et al., 2022).

2. Avoid Peak Heat Hours
The Met Office suggests avoiding walks between 11 am and 3 pm; opt for early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.

3. Choose Grass and Shade
Walk on grass and shaded paths to protect against overheating and paw pad burns.

4. Always Carry Water
Hydration is vital! Bring fresh water and offer it regularly to keep them cool.

5. Know Breed, Age, & Size Risks
Flat-faced breeds (e.g., French Bulldogs) struggle with heat due to breathing issues. Large breeds, puppies, and obese dogs are also at higher risk.

Heatstroke symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, or collapse—cool them down quickly (wet towels/shade/small sips of water) and contact a vet immediately if suspected.

Protecting your dog means understanding their unique needs!

🎓 Puppy Academy Graduation Day! 🐾

Today we wrapped up our current Puppy Academy with the most amazing group of pups and owners! We had a fun final lesson learning some new tricks, handed out our special graduation boxes, took some super cute graduation photos, and finished off with plenty of playtime, socialising — and even some bubble fun!

Before class, me, Nala, and our lovely assistant Lucy enjoyed a little treat with a cheeky Starbucks stop — Nala loved her puppuccino (no surprise there!) and Lucy enjoyed her Starbucks too! It was the perfect way to start the day. During socialising time, all the excitement finally caught up with Nala and she decided to take a little break and chill while the puppies played. She definitely earned her rest after being the best helper!

Once we got home, Nala was treated to playtime in the sunshine with her favourite new toy — a soft, squishy pretzel — and had the best time winding down after such a fun morning.

Our Puppy Academy runs for 8 weeks, but the support doesn’t stop there — all our graduates get access to our private community for a full year to help guide you through the next stages of your puppy’s growth. We’re here for the exciting milestones and the tricky times too!

Watching the journey from Week 1 to Week 8 has been incredible — seeing the bond between you and your dogs strengthen and watching everyone’s confidence grow has been such a privilege.

We are now taking pre-bookings for our next Puppy Academy starting 24th May — spaces are limited, so if you’re thinking of joining us, don’t wait!

Happy Graduation Day to all our amazing pups and owners — we’re so proud of you!
We can’t wait to welcome our next group and start a brand-new journey.

Friday Funday! ☀️🐾

We kicked off the day bright and early with Rex joining our furry CEO, Nala, for a beautiful sunrise walk. With the weather starting to warm up, we made sure to head out early, sticking to trails with plenty of woodland and water nearby to keep everyone cool and comfy.

Jojo is still making the most of her garden adventures while waiting for her muzzle to arrive — she’s become quite the foraging queen! With school breaking up for Easter, there were plenty of extra cuddles on the cards for her today too.

We also spent some time helping one of our pups get used to walking calmly near cars, mixing in some slow, calming walks to build confidence step-by-step. It’s all about going at their pace and making sure they feel safe and happy!

In between walks, we popped in to see some of our furry friends who were staying home today — making sure they had time to pop outside for a toilet break, stretch their legs, and of course, get plenty of fuss and belly rubs before we left. Can’t forget about our stay-at-home pals!

After a busy day, Nala enjoyed a gentle afternoon stroll, taking in the scents and stretching her legs before settling in for a well-earned snooze.

We’re so excited for tomorrow — it’s the final week of Puppy Academy, and we’ve got a few surprises planned for our clever pups! Plus, we can’t wait to catch up with our one-to-one training clients and see all the amazing progress they’ve been making.

What’s your dog’s favourite way to cool down after a walk — a shady nap or a splash in some water? Let us know in the comments!

🦴Treat Time 🦴

Nala was a little bit disappointed this week when, on the first day of the month, I forgot to give her special delivery from I think she genuinely believed she’d been forgotten… or worse, that I’d stopped her subscription!

Turns out, I’d accidentally popped her treat bag in with the pile of gifts I’m preparing for some of the other pups I work with and completely forgot about it. Thankfully, I found it today—and Nala's face lit up the moment she spotted it.

Holly always makes sure her treat box is tailored perfectly to Nala’s health needs and diet, and Nala wasted no time pulling out a chew the second I opened the bag. Safe to say I’m firmly back in her good books now!

Thank you so much for making sure my little princess is always well looked after.

Thursday Thrills! ☀️🐾

The day kicked off bright and early, and it was one where our furry CEO, Nala, was fully on duty — making sure she could join in for a bit of quality control on her friends’ walks! She takes her job very seriously when it comes to making sure everyone’s having fun (and getting their fair share of treats, of course!).

With the sunshine sticking around, we were mindful to keep to the shady woodland trails, making sure the gang could keep cool while still getting their sniffari fix. When we could, we even veered towards trails near streams for a quick water break — though not everyone was quite as excited as Nala to dip their paws in!

There were plenty of sniffing opportunities, snuffaries in full swing, and foraging moments to break up the fun and give everyone a chance to catch their breath and hydrate.

Nala also helped today with our newest friend, spending some time relaxing and sunbathing in the garden, encouraging a little playtime and helping them feel more comfortable. She’s quite the hostess!

It looks like the spring sunshine is here to stay, so we’ll be making sure water is always available on our walks and taking extra care to keep everyone cool and happy.

What’s your pup’s favourite way to cool down — paddling in streams or a shady nap? Let us know in the comments!

🐾 How to Keep Your Dog Cool During Summer Walks 🐾

Summer walks are a great way to enjoy the sunshine with your pup, but warm weather can be tough on dogs. 🐶☀️ It’s important to keep them safe and cool while still giving them the exercise and enrichment they need. Here are my top tips for summer walks:

Walk During Cooler Times
Stick to early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are lower. Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day to reduce the risk of overheating.

Check the Pavement
Always check the ground with your hand before heading out. If it’s too hot for you to touch, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Stick to shaded paths or grassy areas instead.

Bring Plenty of Water
Always carry water for your dog, especially on longer walks. A collapsible bowl or portable bottle makes it easy to keep them hydrated on the go.

Use Cooling Gear
Consider a cooling vest, bandana, or mat to help your dog stay comfortable. These are great for regulating their temperature during warm walks.

Take Breaks in the Shade
If you’re out on a long walk, find shaded spots to rest and cool down. Trees and park benches are perfect for a quick break!

Shorten Walks
On particularly hot days, opt for shorter walks and make up for it with indoor enrichment activities, like puzzle toys or scent games.

Watch for Signs of Overheating
Keep an eye out for excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy—these can all be signs of heatstroke. If you notice these symptoms, cool your dog down immediately and contact a vet if necessary.

Let Them Swim
If your dog enjoys water, a safe dip in a stream, lake, or paddling pool can be a great way to cool off. Always supervise near water.

Adjust Their Routine
Be flexible with your walks during summer. Sometimes skipping a walk in extreme heat is the safest option.

Summer walks can still be fun and safe with the right precautions! 🐾 What’s your go-to tip for keeping your dog cool in the summer? Let me know in the comments!

Tuesday Thrills! ☀️🐾

Sunshine and wagging tails today — we couldn’t have asked for better walking weather! We kicked off bright and early with the boys who, as always, made sure I was wide awake and ready to keep up with their cheeky antics.

Jojo, along with one of our new clients, enjoyed some home enrichment this morning. Jojo is still waiting for her muzzle to arrive and Betsy is in her settling-in phase, so we’re taking things nice and steady, making sure she feels safe and comfortable before joining the trail gang.

Our furry CEO, Nala, joined us from lunchtime onwards, making sure her friends were having the best time (and keeping me in check as always!). She even helped Luna discover a brand-new trail in her new area — nothing like a fresh adventure to make tails wag!

The day was packed with sniffaris, playtime, and foraging fun. And for some of our crew, we enjoyed slower, chilled walks, letting them take in the scents and sounds of spring.

The sunshine is definitely starting to heat up, so a friendly reminder to everyone — keep an eye on your furry friends when out and about, bring water, and take breaks in the shade when needed.

Another busy day lined up tomorrow — fingers crossed for more sunshine walks!

What’s your dog’s favourite thing to do on a sunny day? Let us know in the comments!

Melancholy Monday… but still full of wagging tails!

Today was a bit of a lighter one for us at Nala's Trails. We had a few errands to run (including picking up Nala's food — very important business!) and, of course, the joy of waiting around for the plumber… So a slower start to the week, but not without some fun! Nala definitely appreciated a little lie-in after her busy weekend antics.

Once we hit the trails, it was all about chilled vibes — plenty of foraging, a good dose of playtime and, as always, Nala joined in with her friends. She even took us down a brand new trail that may have got us a little lost… but that’s the beauty of letting them follow their noses — new adventures always await!

We also had time today to pop in on some of our furry friends who were having a cosy day at home, making sure they got a toilet break, a bit of playtime and, of course, some fuss and belly rubs.

Tomorrow’s looking like a busy one, so here’s hoping this sunshine sticks around!

How does your dog like to spend a slow day — snuggled on the sofa or nose to the ground? Let us know in the comments!

Because fur mums deserve to be spoiled too…

As a proud fur mum, I 100% believe that dog mums count on Mother’s Day — and yes, I absolutely buy myself something "from Nala" every year (she has great taste, obviously!).

This year, I treated myself to a gorgeous new hiking bag and some cosy socks from — and of course, I couldn’t leave Nala out! She’s been spoiled too with a new treat pouch and a toy, because it wouldn’t be fair if I got something and she didn’t.

Looking forward to testing them all out on today’s Mother’s Day hike — nothing better than spending the day with the one who made me a mum in the first place.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the dog mums out there! You deserve to celebrate yourself today too.

🌸 Happy Mother's Day 🌸

Today, we celebrate all the incredible mums out there — the ones who’ve raised, nurtured, and loved. But we also know that this day can be complicated.

To those longing to become mothers, those who never got the chance, and those who are grieving — we see you.

To the mothers who stepped into the role without a title, the foster mums, the stepmums, the aunties, the friends, the chosen family — you are so deeply appreciated.

To the dog mums, like me, who pour their hearts into caring for their fur babies — your love, patience, and dedication are no less worthy of celebration.

Not everyone gets the mother they deserve, but sometimes we find the mother we need — in a friend, a mentor, or even a four-legged companion. And that love deserves to be honored too.

From one proud fur mum to everyone who considers themselves a mother in any form — Happy Mother’s Day. You are loved, valued, and celebrated today and every day.

With love,
Tara & Nala 💕🐾

Thursday Thrills! ☀️🐾

The day kicked off bright and early with our usual bunch of cheeky faces making very sure I was wide awake and ready to keep up with their mischief! There was plenty of sniffing, tail wags, and free-run time for those allowed — a proper energising start to the day!

Jojo is still patiently waiting for her muzzle to arrive, so although she couldn’t join us on the trails, we made the most of her garden with some foraging and fun games. She definitely made sure she didn’t miss out on the action!

This afternoon, our furry CEO Nala joined in to supervise (and by supervise, I mean dish out the side eye while making sure everyone got their fair share of treats!). Foraging was top priority, followed by some chilled strolls where a few of our walkers decided it was their turn to take me on the adventure — nose-led routes only!

Lots of fun, laughter and spring sunshine today — fingers crossed it keeps shining tomorrow!

Does your dog like to lead the walk or stick by your side? Let us know in the comments!

Wednesday Wanders! ☀️🐾

We kicked off the day with sunshine, wagging tails, and lots of happy faces on our morning walks! Our furry CEO Nala joined in too — clearly making the most of the bright skies after yesterday’s gloom. Sniffaris were in full swing and, as always, there was plenty of foraging fun to go around!

Our afternoon took a slightly more adventurous turn when a couple of dogs decided to go on a solo mission through the woods! Thankfully, thanks to the brilliant bonds we’ve built with our walkers, our group stayed calm and focused, and we quickly detoured to a more secluded trail — ideal for our reactive pals to enjoy their walks in peace.

There was no shortage of sniffing, plenty of games, and we attempted to practise a bit of patience with Lincoln… though we’re pretty sure his ears were just for show today! We also had time to check in on our furry friends staying home, we got some game play and belly rubs.

Friendly reminder: if someone asks you to pop your dog on a lead when theirs is on, the answer is always yes. It’s not about blame — just basic manners and safety for everyone.

Here’s hoping the sunshine sticks around for another lovely day tomorrow!

🐾 The Role of Scent Trails in Mental Stimulation 🐾

Did you know that a dog’s sense of smell is up to 100,000 times stronger than ours? 👃 For our canine companions, sniffing isn’t just fun—it’s essential for their mental wellbeing! Scent trails are a fantastic way to engage your dog’s brain and make walks even more enriching. Here’s why they’re so important:

Sniffing is Natural Behaviour
Sniffing allows dogs to explore and interpret the world around them. By following scent trails, they’re tapping into their instincts, which helps them feel confident and fulfilled.

It’s a Brain Workout
Following a scent trail requires focus and concentration, which tires your dog out mentally. Just 10 minutes of sniffing can be as tiring as a 30-minute walk!

Reduces Stress
Sniffing can have a calming effect on dogs. It lowers stress levels and helps them relax, making scent trails a great activity for nervous or reactive dogs.

Boosts Confidence
For shy or uncertain dogs, scent trails offer a way to explore the world at their own pace. It’s a gentle way to build confidence while keeping them engaged.

How to Include Scent Trails on Walks:
✔️ Let Them Lead – Allow your dog to follow their nose, even if it means slowing down. Walks don’t always have to be about distance!
✔️ Scatter Treats – In a safe, grassy area, scatter some treats and let your dog use their nose to find them. It’s a simple way to add enrichment.
✔️ Try Scent Work Games – Hide treats or toys along your route and encourage your dog to find them. Start with easy spots and gradually make it more challenging.
✔️ Visit New Areas – Explore different walking routes to introduce your dog to new smells and environments.

Scent trails aren’t just fun for dogs—they’re an easy and effective way to meet their mental stimulation needs. 🐶💖 So next time you’re out, slow down and let your dog’s nose guide the way!

Do you include sniffing time in your walks? Let me know in the comments! If you’re curious about adding more enrichment to your walks, drop me a DM—I’d love to help.

Tuesday Thrills! ☀️🐾

We kicked off today with a bit of behind-the-scenes work after a late cancellation — and honestly, Nala was thrilled to stay in bed a little longer and wait for the fog to clear before her morning walk (spoiler alert: it didn’t!).

Thankfully, by the time we headed out for our first walks, the fog had lifted and we were greeted by wagging tails and happy faces! There was plenty of people-watching, some scatter feeding for those allowed, fun games to keep minds busy — and Martha was in full cuddle mode, showering me with kisses all walk long (not complaining!).

The sunshine made a lovely appearance in the afternoon, and our furry CEO decided it was the perfect time to join in on the fun. She made sure everyone got their fair share of treats while foraging and tried her best to encourage the girls to keep up with her pace. That said, she was much more chilled during Rex’s walk, letting him zoom about while she stayed close for moral support.

Let’s hope this sunshine sticks around — it’s starting to feel like spring is really on its way!

What’s your dog’s favourite part of a walk — the cuddles, the zoomies, or the treats? Let us know in the comments!
