Special moments like this make the rainy days, unsocialable hours and life on call that little bit more worthwhile.

“All too often, pain in ridden horses is labelled as “bad” behaviour. The apparently ‘sound’ horse is ‘naughty’, ‘lazy’, ‘difficult’, ‘explosive’, ‘spooky’, ‘nappy’ and more. These labels are wrong. Pain affects all aspects of a horse’s performance, including it’s partnership with the rider and it’s potential to progress. It does not always create lameness. Relieving pain can lead to improved performance, a deeper partnership and greater potential.

In ‘Harmonious Horsemanship: Use of the Ridden Horse Ethogram to Optimise Potentail, Partnership and Performance’, Sue Dyson and Sue Palmer share their professional knowledge and experience.

You will learn how to use a list of 24 behaviours to check for musculoskeletal pain in the ridden horse. The book includes a gripping mix of research studies, contributions from industry experts and real-life case studies. Only by first recognising pain can we then address it through accurate assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

This book is full of practical tools and backed by robust science, teaches you how to use ridden behaviour to recognise subtle signs of pain, even in horses that appear to be sound. It is for anyone who cares about the horse, wether you are an interested amateur owner or an experienced equestrian professional. Together, we can make the world a better place for your horses.”

A blast from the past! We found this photo from 2007 when Pam was a student vet assisting our now locum vet Sarah Coombs. Sarah is one of several vets who very kindly work for us in Pam’s absence. Sarah has an interest in endurance and is an FEI Endurance and Eventing Vet which she manages to fit in alongside her regular routine equine vet work and gig rowing.

Vets are currently seeing an increased number of horses and ponies suffering from Atypical Myopathy (AM) otherwise known as Sycamore Myopathy. This severe and often fatal muscle disorder is caused by ingesting Sycamore seeds, leaves or seedlings.
For further information and advice, please read the Royal Veterinary College Owners’ Guide below and do not hesitate to contact us should you have any concerns for your horse or pony.

**CASE STUDY**
Everyone meet Dinky!
Dinky is a 12 year old, Welsh Section A gelding. He has struggled with laminitis for several years and had chronic changes in his feet. We were tasked with a tough decision of trying to save him or saying goodbye, as he also had an aggressive tumour on the end of his p***s. Fortunately his owners are very dedicated and allowed us to do all that we could to save him. Firstly we had to see if we could get him more comfortable on his feet as he wasn’t able to walk around very well. Andrew Poynton, a specialist farrier was called in to do an aggressive remedial trim and put a pair of imprint shoes on his front feet. You can compare the changes on the X-rays before and after trimming, in the photos below. Dinky was also given pain relief and a blood test was taken for equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). Dinky’s blood test came back positive so he was started on a new drug to help lower the insulin in his blood stream, which in turn would help with glucose regulation and reduce the symptoms of laminitis. A few weeks later Dinky was able to walk and trot around at his own leisure and was a lot happier in himself. We then had to tackle the tumour. Dinky was started on antibiotics in order to clear up the secondary infection prior to coming in for surgery to amputate the end of his p***s. The surgery was carried out at our premises by Bryan O’Meara and was very successful. A new urethral opening was created higher up Dinky’s p***s to allow him to urinate. Dinky passed urine straight after the surgery and was bright and comfortable. The next day he enjoyed being made a fuss of by Pam’s daughter and was given antibiotics and pain relief for the following 10 days. Dinky is now back at home where he is sound, happy and with no signs of the tumour or laminitis recurring at this stage. His owners are thrilled that he has pulled through and we consider him to be a very special and lucky little pony.
If you are concerned about any of the above conditions in your pony then please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss.
