Diddy Dave’s Diary…

We’re continuing to socialise and expose DD to lots of new experiences, sounds, surfaces, dogs and novel environments, including escalators, lifts, shops, people, the beach etc

Socialising / Habituation exposure for our pups is one of the most important aspects of their development and can help them grow up to be confident, calm, optimistic, and open to learning. Here are some tips for socialising a young puppy:

Introduce Sounds

Puppies can be gradually exposed to everyday sounds like household appliances, children, and traffic. You can play recordings of these sounds at a low volume to begin with.. ( there are 100’s of YouTube videos for this.. )

Introduce Different Surfaces

Puppies can be exposed to different surfaces like grass, gravel, wood, concrete, leaves, pavement, sand and tiles. This can really help build body confidence
You could make a ‘sensory path’ to help them get used to different surfaces and textures

Introduce New Experiences

Puppies should be exposed to a variety of new experiences, like traveling in the car, crowds and cafes.

Take It Slow And Keep It Positive!

Just like babies, puppies develop at different rates and it’s important to go at our pups pace. Don’t try to ‘flood’ pup with too much, don’t get to close to potentially scary sounds / sights etc

Whilst exposing our pups, distance can be your friend and over time you can move closer.

Our dogs learn by ‘association’ or ‘classical conditioning’ so it’s important to keep all interactions fun and rewarding

Attending a well run puppy class can be an excellent start to your pups social education.

Got some time on your hands?!

These cakes are always a firm favourite with our Woofers 😉

Liver cake & pilchard cake recipe 😊

Liver cake

Ingredients
450g of raw liver (I use lamb or chicken - sometimes a mix)
450g self raising flour - although I’ve used plain when I’ve run out! You could use gluten free if your dog has allergies.
3eggs
Milk/water

Method

Mix eggs in jug & add milk/water to double the volume.

Using a blender, liquidise the liver to smooth consistency.

Mix in the egg/water mixture to the blended liver

In a large bowl combine the flour & liver mix & stir well - it will have a very sticky, dough like consistency.

I line a foil baking tin (shop bought for me 😉)
Approximately 24cm x 18cm

Pour mixture in & bake @180 degrees for 45-60mins
Check on it at around 35mins - top should be darkened & should bounce back when pressed lightly.

Remove from oven & let it cool a bit & cut into desired sizes whilst a little warm.

Keep treats in fridge & use within 2-3 days
Pop the rest in freezer - they defrost really quick!

Pilchard cake

Ingredients

2 x 400g tins of pilchards in tomato sauce ( I used 3x smaller cans of Glenryck)
250g plain flour
2large eggs

Method

Tip the pilchards into bowl & blitz with liquidiser.
Add flour & eggs & mix
Add a little water if mixture is a bit dry.
Pour mixture into lined foil tray (same size as one above)
Bake @180 degrees for 20-30 mins ( skewer should come out clean)
Store in fridge & use within s couple of days & freeze some. 😁

Look forward to seeing your cooking skills..... 😉😁🤞

There is literally a class for all dogs in all stages of life. Plus, they run all year round! 🥳

We have two trainers in all our classes, ensuring everyone gets not only the group experience, but some one 2 one guidance and support too.

Here are the top benefits of training for both you and your dog!

1. It Builds Your Dog’s Confidence

When you reward your dog during training, it teaches them that making decisions and engaging with you and the environment earns them great things, like treats, play and praise.
Your dog will then be more open and confident to new experiences as they are positive and rewarding!

2. You Will Create a Stronger Bond Between You and Your Dog

We all of course love our dogs dearly, however, when you spend time together training, helping your dog deal with certain situations, you create an understanding, learn about each other, and share positive experiences. The bond you build through training is at a different level.
You build trust and have a better understanding of one another

3. Training Your Dog Helps to Reduce Undesirable Behaviour

As you and your dog will have a better bond and connection, it is easier to set boundaries for what is and isn’t allowed. Regular training sessions work your dog both physically and mentally in a positive way, providing stimulation and attention which helps to prevent undesirable and potentially harmful behaviours.

4. With Correct Training, You Will Increase Your Dogs Sociability

As your dog learns great behaviours they will become a pleasure to take out and you’ll be more likely to take them out to new places with you.
This will result in more positive experiences for you and your dog.

5. Training Increases Safety

Ensuring your dog listens to your cues in all environments can prevent them from bad experiences or harm with other dogs or animals, running into a busy road, or other potentially dangerous situations.

6. Makes It Easier for Pet Professionals to Work With Your Dog

Dogs whose owners have worked on handling exercises and training can really help with vet and grooming visits, which can help make the experience better for both the groomer or vet and your dog.

Why Does my Dog.....Dig?

Dogs may dig to bury bones or toys, which is an instinctual behaviour to hide food from other predators.

If your dog is digging under a gate or fence they could be simply trying to escape!

Some dogs dig to alleviate boredom and stress or, like Bessie, just for fun.

Digging is great exercise for our dogs as it builds muscle strength in forelimbs and shoulders.

If you’re fed up with Fido digging holes in your garden, build them a digging area or a tyre filled with sand does the job!

Keep calm & let ‘em dig!

Why teach…… a chin rest?

We’ve been practicing chin rests as part of our ‘Life Skills’ awards 😀

But what’s the point?

A chin rest shows that your dog is willing to be an active participant in their care.

Teaching a chin rest can be part of a dog's behaviour modification plan when they are resistant to needed care, such as applying eye drops and ear medication.
This is sometimes called ‘cooperative veterinary care’.

Pearl demonstrates perfectly whilst I touch above her eyes to mimic eye drop application.

Clever girl 😉

May your Christmas be furry and bright!

Mark and I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.. (we’re not quite sure where the year has gone to be honest.. but they say time flies when you’re having fun..🤩)

Mark and I are so very grateful for all the support we receive throughout the year. From our clients who attend group classes, workshops, private lessons and home boarding, to our loyal supporters who like, share, comment on our posts and recommend us.

Thank you, thank you very much ❤️

We would also like to say a heartfelt thank you for all the incredible cards and generous gifts we have received this year, we have been really touched by them all.

We’d also like to say thank you to all the other local dog and animal professionals we come in to contact with and collaborate with throughout the year. A very special thank you to everyone at North Park Veterinary Group who look after our own dogs so well.. particularly our Pearl this year who took a liking to an Adder..😳

We have some brand new format courses and workshops in the pipeline for next year and hopefully some new collaborations too.. watch this space …😉

The WWs crew are now taking a well earned break until the 10th January🥳🎄
All messages will be answered when we’re back in ‘office’ on the 10th and we’ll see everyone back training on the 11th January 😀

How do I stop my dog…barking out of the window?!

We’ve had an enormous amount of squirrel activity in the garden just recently 🐿️ ( we practically live in the woods ) 🤔

Some of our dogs started off quietly enjoying ‘squirrel watch’ and it really wasn’t a problem or issue until the pesky squirrels started getting closer to the house….!

Living in a multi dog household can sometimes have its challenges and having one dog bark can quite easily set everyone off 😳

Apart from the barking at the squirrels, we noticed that Alan and Ernie in particular, were becoming increasingly obsessed with window watching for squirrels.

Why is this a problem?

Well, apart from the barking which is the most obvious sign of frustration and over arousal, we noticed some other more subtle body language:
* Stiffening body or freezing
* Standing on tippy toes
* Intense staring
* Hyper-vigilance (constantly scanning the environment)
We also noticed that they weren’t resting and sleeping as much.

Doesn’t sound too much of a problem until we think of the bigger picture .

These types of obsessive behaviours practiced many times a day over days, weeks and months can cause a level of stress which could potentially affect our dogs health and possibly cause other behavioural problems.

It was definitely time to intervene and put some ‘Control and Management’ in place.

We either needed to stop access to the door or stop them looking out 🤔

Probably the quickest and easiest solution was to apply an obscure window film.

Job done!

Dogs can no longer obsess and bark, we still have lots of lovely light coming into the room, we left a gap higher up so we could still see out and it’s fully removable any time we want!
