Diddy Dave’s Diary…
We’re continuing to socialise and expose DD to lots of new experiences, sounds, surfaces, dogs and novel environments, including escalators, lifts, shops, people, the beach etc
Socialising / Habituation exposure for our pups is one of the most important aspects of their development and can help them grow up to be confident, calm, optimistic, and open to learning. Here are some tips for socialising a young puppy:
Introduce Sounds
Puppies can be gradually exposed to everyday sounds like household appliances, children, and traffic. You can play recordings of these sounds at a low volume to begin with.. ( there are 100’s of YouTube videos for this.. )
Introduce Different Surfaces
Puppies can be exposed to different surfaces like grass, gravel, wood, concrete, leaves, pavement, sand and tiles. This can really help build body confidence
You could make a ‘sensory path’ to help them get used to different surfaces and textures
Introduce New Experiences
Puppies should be exposed to a variety of new experiences, like traveling in the car, crowds and cafes.
Take It Slow And Keep It Positive!
Just like babies, puppies develop at different rates and it’s important to go at our pups pace. Don’t try to ‘flood’ pup with too much, don’t get to close to potentially scary sounds / sights etc
Whilst exposing our pups, distance can be your friend and over time you can move closer.
Our dogs learn by ‘association’ or ‘classical conditioning’ so it’s important to keep all interactions fun and rewarding
Attending a well run puppy class can be an excellent start to your pups social education.
