How cute is this little man!!

Please join us in welcoming little Piccolo to the world! Piccolo is an American Miniature Horse, born at the beginning of October to his proud parents, Archimedes and Pandora.

To keep Piccolo safe and help give him the best life, it’s very important for him to be vaccinated. At 6 months old, he will have his first vaccination for Influenza and Tetanus. He will have a second dose 4-6 weeks later, and a third 5-6 months after his second. Quite the course for a little boy! However, this means he will be protected against the two most serious diseases for horses.

Influenza is a very contagious virus that strips the airways of their defences causing a cough, nasal discharge and lethargy. It can be lethal to foals and immunocompromised horses.

A booster vaccination is given every year (within 365 days of the previous injection). If you wish to compete your horse or pony, the society (regulatory body) with whom you compete will state which vaccination protocol you must follow. Following the equine influenza outbreak in 2019 many regulatory bodies and competition centres require that horses and ponies have six monthly booster vaccinations.

Tetanus is a bacteria picked up from the ground contaminating a wound. It is a rapidly developing disease that leads to profound stiffness, seizures and death. Successful treatment once contracted is rare. Therefore, a booster is given every 2 years and if an unvaccinated horse sustains a wound, we’ll always give a tetanus antitoxin injection.

Pandora had a booster vaccination 4 weeks before her due date to make sure the antibodies passed to him through her milk for the first 6 months of his life. If she didn’t have this, we would have given the antitoxin injection to Piccolo to make sure he’s covered.

Vaccinations are essential to combat rapidly changing diseases and keep your horse healthy and happy for as long as possible.

Our vets, Sally, Rhiannon and Daisy are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

We're sure you all know Sally, and what a fantastic vet she is. But did you realise that Sally has an impressive 25 years experience in both equine and small animal veterinary! 🤩

Sally isn't one to sing her own praises but her incredible dedication to the veterinary profession is an enormous achievement, and she's still out day and night putting her heart and soul into every single animal she sees. We would be lost without her here at the clinic and think she deserves some appreciation for the amazing job she does ✨️ We'd love it if you can share with us how Sally has impacted your pets lives, and a picture of your pet if you've got one!

Do we think muscle therapy with Dr Spyro will be popular? 🐈🩺

(Please note- this pony belongs to Sally, all cats are kept out of the clinic when clients horses are in and no feline acupuncture is available we're afraid!)

Paddock rest for horses recovering from injuries may seem like a simple enough instruction, but what do we really mean?

If your horse has had surgery or suffered an injury that requires box rest, they'll often have small paddock turnout advised during their recovery period. Now, a small paddock can be interpreted in many ways, but our advise is to start with an area no bigger than 2 stables. Your horse will likely want to have a whizz round after being box rested, and if the space is big enough for them to canter around they aren't paddock 'resting'!

Pictured below is a horse in week 5 of postoperative rest, in a space just slightly bigger than her stable. Do not hesitate to contact us with any queries during recovery periods with your horses 🐎

Warning: Graphic image!

Kita went out to see Gagman just prior to Christmas with this nasty looking area on his muzzle. She found a thorn burrowed into the tissue which had caused an abscess to form and then burst! The area was flushed and dead tissue removed, and the photo on the right shows Gagman now- hardly even a scar! 😃

Thank you to his lovely owner for letting us share his photos.

Introducing our new vet to the Stoven Hall team🤩

Kita joined us in November last year and some of you may have already met her out doing equine calls, seeing your horses in the clinic, or in small animal consult. Kita was working in a busy equine referral hospital prior to joining us at Stoven Hall, and has also spent time in Africa treating equines, small and farm animals there. She has a young TB mare called Cara who she is retraining from racing, and hopes to event this year. She also has a naughty cat called Spyro, who you might see round the clinic!

Kita enjoys all aspects of veterinary but particularly enjoys sports horse medicine and lameness, equine colic, and small animal internal medicine🐴🐱🐶

When she's not being a vet you'll find Kita either riding her horse, or behind an easel producing animal portraits! She's looking forward to meeting all the Stoven Hall clients and their animals!

Gastroscopy! 📸

Have you ever wondered what the inside of your horses stomach looks like? With our 3m gastroscope we are able to go into the stomach and have a good look around. This allows us to identify any lesions and diagnose Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) to advise on treatment.

Many horses have ulceration in their stomach and it can present in a variety of ways. Keep an eye on our page for more information on gastric ulcers soon!

If you are concerned your horse may have gastric disease, don't hesitate to get in touch with the clinic and we will be happy to help you.

After lovely Leo's adventures he's taking some well earned holiday from clinic duties, and we have a new intern trying to fill some very big (paws) shoes! 🐾
The bow tie might make him look the part, but this chap has got lots to learn yet to help with Leo's job!
