When it comes to my passion for working with dogs, I will never stop learning, so I do my best to equip myself with as much knowledge as I can in as many training methods as possible. I aim to help you understand your dog and vice versa. Opening that line of communication is so important to be able to live with our best friends. I have 2 kids, both have been raised around dogs. My eldest son is 14 and has not known a life without a dog, he often comes with me as my cameraman/ assistant during school holidays. Our youngest is 4 years old and absolutely loves the dogs, She loves copying what i do and wants to be involved with training, particularly the giving treats aspect of training . It's just as important to teach children how to be around dogs, as it is to teach dogs to be around kids. She sometimes comes with me to mini adventures and is the official treat dispenser assistant. I am fully insured and DBS checked and licenced by Bedford Borough Council to board a maximum of 2 dogs.

Oscar joins us for a weeks Board and Learn. He's done fabulously in his 121 sessions. His owners are away on holiday and they want him to continue with his training as well as getting a handle on his crazy need to jump at people's faces. He's super friendly and all he wants to do is get your attention but he does this in a way that is totally inappropriate... Especially when the person doesn't know him and he's flying off the ground trying to say hi 🤕🥴🥴😅😅

Why do we set our dogs up to succeed?

✅ We become proactive in our approach
✅We learn skills to help our dogs
✅Our dogs learn new skills to cope
✅Our relationship with our dog becomes stronger
✅Our dogs become more confident
✅Our dogs are not having to repeat the "bad" behaviour
✅They learn a new set of behaviour patterns
✅They are keen to offer new behaviours and learn new skills
✅They become more optimistic

What happens if we don't?

❌ Our dog continues to repeat the bad behaviour
❌The behaviour continues to get worse
❌We become reactive in our approach - meaning we are more likely to correct, get angry and frustrated at our dogs
❌Our dogs learn that you are also not able to keep them safe
❌We suppress behaviour so our dogs shut down or start misbehaving in other areas
❌The relationship between you and your dog is not as strong
❌They are reluctant to offer new behaviours in case something bad happens
❌Your dog is always on alert
❌They are more pessimistic about their world

Some people might moan about Bedford, but there are some amazing sights to see, especially along the embankment which is stunning. Rollo helped take the grandparents on a tour around the river and town centre and showed them all the dog friendly places along the way(we didn't have time to go inside every single one but we pointed them out😜😅😅) .
We started off at in Russel Park, and made our way along the river. We walked through the and headed towards , whizzed around in there, checked out (from the outside for today) checked out (dogs are not allowed inside as far as I'm aware) ready for later this week... Then headed out towards the Faces along the high street and popped into (which is dog friendly) , then made our way back through The Castle Mound.

We did a tour of Bedford with the grandparents and popped into and guess who we got to meet... Little teeny tiny Fig. Rollo wasn't quite sure what to make of her at first 😅❤️. He was also brave enough to say hi and take treats from Tony.

Charlie had his first session today. After making sure to rule out pain and discomfort and also changing his diet we have begun on re teaching him some things. He is currently only doing things that will gain him an immediate reward. This means he gets easily frustrated, only listens if a treat is on offer and steals things on purpose as a way of making sure he gets a treat in exchange.
We started off with some clicker training to help get him on the right track and offering behaviours that WE wanted while letting him figure out what would work. We then skilled his humans up on how to teach him to regulate his emotions as he often goes from 0-100 in a split second and then doesn't know how to calm back down. This involved lots of really fun games that he enjoys. He particularly like chasing and shaking toys so we offered him a suitable outlet for this.
We then also taught him a stay and door manners.
Basically we covered A LOT, but we need to tackle all of these things in order to help his resource guarding out as these skills will be transferable to that as we progress.

Not a typical session today. We discussed ways to help with her puppy mouthing and how to teach her to settle, Discussed diet changes but most importantly for her human, we just had a chat, because sometimes that's whats needed.
We troubleshooted some stuff to see if we can make things easier while juggling life and still teaching the pup good behaviour in the process.
Whinnie was more than happy to chill out and take everything on board.

Relationships

They're complicated.

Humans and dogs alike, we seek connections and form relationships.
Whether you want to look at dogs as if they were wolves… who in fact form family units which are called packs

Or whether you want to think about human relationships… complex family units consisting of parents, and offspring of different ages.

Its not easy to navigate these relationships at the best of times (as humans)

Sometimes we get into toxic relationships where there’s a feeling of dishonesty, feeling unsafe , threatened, distrust, violence, intimidation.

Sometimes we’re lucky enough to find someone that respects us, trusts us, makes us feel safe, treats us as individuals and has good communication skills.

The relationship we have with our dogs is even trickier.

We have an interspecies relationship.
This means we are often conflicted about whether we are supposed to treat our companions as animals or as human family?

Regardless of how you want to view it.. it is still a relationship.
And relationships are complicated.

Just as with humans,
We can have toxic or healthy relationships with our dogs
So how would you have a toxic relationship with your dog, they cant talk…nor can they leave , they’re totally dependent on you?

Well ask yourself, what can you provide for your dog in a relationship, aside from food, water, shelter?

And then suddenly we hit the “Training Methods “ talk
So lets rename it

Lets call it Learning and Experiences.

What are your dogs learning through they relationship experiences?
With aversive/compulsion based training methods
Dogs are exposed to
• Control. One person makes all the decisions and tells the other what to do
• Hostility
• Disrespect
• Intimidation
• Physical violence

With ethical/ reward based methods dogs experience
• Mutual respect
• Trust
• Honesty
• Compromise
• Individuality
• Good communication
• Anger control

Because at the end of the day, dogs are not wolves, they are part of are family unit, regardless of whether they are a different species or not.

What kind of relationship do you want with your dog??

Amigo recently acquired a brother and both have been learning to live with each other. When we first met Tomo he pretty much barked non stop at EVERYTHING!
We gave his owner some homework and well... She has certainly worked her ass off with it and today Tomo was a completely different dog. His confidence has sky rocketed, he was happy to greet me when i came in and was play bouncing around, taking treats and letting me stroke him.
Amigo on the other hand has gone backwards. Back in December (pre Tomo) he was attacked by a dog and he's gradually got worse with dogs and now freaks out and barks and lunges. Not particularly helped by the fact Tomo is more confident and therefore a bit more dominant towards Amigo who is very submissive.
We've given their owner some homework to help boost Amigos confidence and lower his stress levels as well as keeping up the great work with Tomo.
No doubt they will be good as gold next time 😎

Meet Bertie... He's around 10mth old now and fear reactive to a number of things...
Let's think about fear for a minute... Fear doesn't always have to be rational, it could be the thought or idea that something MIGHT happen that is enough to become worrisome. It's also hard for someone who doesn't share the fear to even begin to understand why and how to help the other person /dog overcome it.
As an example from a human perspective
My daughter has recently been spooked by a fly that buzzed in the middle of the night.
This has led her to have an irrational fear of sleeping in her room.
We've been getting through it through offering reassurance, being patient, showing her she doesn't need to be scared etc... And yes... We have also got frustrated and angry when we've tried everything and she still refuses to rationalise.

can you punish someone into NOT being scared of something?
No

If you shout at me and tell me off for being scared of spiders.. I'm still going to be scared of spiders... I may also decide that to avoid listening to you shout at me about it, I'm just going to throw a shoe at one and kill it so that you don't tell off.
If I tell my daughter off for being scared of the fly, she's not only NOT going to get over it, she's also going to loose trust and confidence in me that I can keep her safe.

It's very much the same with dogs. You can't reínforce fear as much as you can't punish it.

Bertie's fears don't necessarily stem from previous bad experiences, they're more him anticipating something bad happening, so we started with teaching him some little tricks that would help his owner reassure him that all is OK.. We then practiced these outside and although we saw a number of things that would have triggered him, he only really barked 2 times. We were able to keep him below threshold for the whole time and he was also responding to his owner when asked to do one of the tricks.
We've skilled him up and gave him and his human some coping strategies.

Cassie had her first session today. She is very defensive of other dogs coming up behind her and is very quick to snap at them if they do. She also gets stalkerish and lowers herself to the ground when approaching other dogs head on. This could be down to various reasons, but whether it's down to insecurity, predatory behaviour, just general cluelessness on how to interact, one thing is certain... She needs to learn a more appropriate and polite approach as this often ends up with her lunging forward and barking at the dog. We will eventually teach her the full greeting sequence, but right now we're just building a stronger relationship with her owner , boosting her confidence and giving her more appropriate skills for her to cope in these situations.
We're also reversing some previous training where she was put on a prong collar as a solution to her reactivity.
She is a really smart girl, so we're sure she will pick up these skills really quickly.
She absolutely loved playing with the toy too!!

This old boy is very well known by all as Oscar Mc Barky face. He barks all the time and at the age of 9yrs old this is just something he's always done as well as pull a lot on the lead.. Today was his first session and we firstly made sure he knew the find it game. Then taught him how to wear a harness that doesn't make him feel trapped and then we went on a walk... To everyones surprise he didn't pull at all... Or sway side to side... He walked beautifully on a loose lead the whole time. Played some find it and then we came across some dogs and people and he didn't bark at all... Through the whole session he did 1 bark!!

Lady storm had a session today. Despite only having had 1 session months ago, her owners have taken advantage of the online support where we have managed to troubleshoot a lot of issues. This has meant she has actually come a long way since that first session. She is still sound sensitive and can get a bit stressed in busy areas so we headed towards town to understand better what her triggers were.
We spent some time at a distance helping her to disengage with the "scary" environment. We went at her pace and let her process things and then encouraged her to a game of find it. We then asked her if she could do any of the tricks she knows how to do confidently at home and to begin with she wasn't sure about it but she began to do a hand touch, middle and spin around the owners leg. Not bad considering she had struggled to focus on her owner at all.
We did take Bailey with us as Storm benefits from having a role model which she definitely benefited from.

it’s not our turn for spontaneous date nights, quiet car rides, to sleep in late, or to have a spotless house. we’ve had that turn, and we will again. right now it’s our turn to model healthy love for our babies. to soak up all the hugs and kisses and laughs. it’s our turn to make memories and cherish it all. we have someone's childhood in our hands and we don't get a redo. 🤍
