Dog behaviour specialist I've always wanted to work and help animals as well as people.

My name is Valentina, I've been working with dogs since 2003, starting of as a dog walker and then working alongside a dog behaviourist, where I realised that this is what I wanted to do. I found that working in dog training let me do both. I have since completed various dog training courses and behaviour modules from

When it comes to my passion for working with dogs, I will never stop learning, so I do my best to equip myself with as much knowledge as I can in as many training methods as possible. I aim to help you understand your dog and vice versa. Opening that line of communication is so important to be able to live with our best friends. I have 2 kids, both have been raised around dogs. My eldest son is 14 and has not known a life without a dog, he often comes with me as my cameraman/ assistant during school holidays. Our youngest is 4 years old and absolutely loves the dogs, She loves copying what i do and wants to be involved with training, particularly the giving treats aspect of training . It's just as important to teach children how to be around dogs, as it is to teach dogs to be around kids. She sometimes comes with me to mini adventures and is the official treat dispenser assistant. I am fully insured and DBS checked and licenced by Bedford Borough Council to board a maximum of 2 dogs.

This week on the Hazelnut Diaries

Check out my wonderful wrinkles....my mum thinks I need ironing out๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿ˜…

Visited which was amazing...mum brought an entire bag of delicious smelling snacks ...but apparently I can't gorge myself on them๐Ÿ™„

I have finally been accepted by my elder brother and sister...

Shopping is fun!

My poo ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐Ÿ’ฉ connoisseur days are over... Mum says I have to wear this muzzle instead so now I can't tell you what that delicious brown lump tastes like๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿถ apparently me eating poo is bad and makes me sick so I have to wear this lovely accessory from .muzzle.movement if I want to run around off lead

Mum got carried away and got me loads of new toys... who'd have thought milk udders would be so chewable๐Ÿ˜… again... apparently I'm not supposed to chomp through this

My favourite brother has finally accepted that I must be touching a living thing at all times and let me touch his tail so I could snooze peacefully โค๏ธ

The one they call the Tiny Trainer is full of fun activities to do with me...I love playing the drums and checking out all the new smells on the floor... apparently she does too! Maybe I can teach her to be more like me โค๏ธ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

All round message. . .
Mum is a massive party pooper... literally...I can't even get a taste of the gourmet droppings left by anyone...I guess she compensates it by giving me yummy treats...๐Ÿค”

Kaia had her 2nd session today. She's been up and down with her confidence on walks so I took Bailey along for some life lessons from a dog to help boost her confidence. It really did help, especially when she was feeling most unsure she would see Bailey wasn't panicking and would follow suit.
She had some fun time off lead round the park and on our way back home we bumped into the one and only Alex who was most pleased to have spotted us from 20m away ๐Ÿ˜….
We'll be doing some more social walks with Kaia to help her come out of her shell and learn from other street dog peers.

During Gryfins first session we gave his owners the skills to help him with his reactivity. He's been much better and showing improvement... yesterday I surprised them with a social session with Bailey and Rollo!
He did superbly to disengage from them at a distance but within minutes we were walking side by side calmly and loosely without going crazy excited! We ended up going to the woods and letting him off lead! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
Gryffin must have thought he'd died and gone to heaven by this point!! So much so ...YOLO...Might as well have a mud bath in the process ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ
We walked past 2 on lead dogs on the same path within nose touching distance and he looked but was not phased and just went on his merry way!
Such a great 2nd session and he clearly had a blast!
Here's to more polite social interactions!

Mr Darcy made some new friends yesterday as well as learning that his owner is no longer going to call him and then walk to him๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿ˜ฒ....we played hide and seek where, for quite some time he just sniffed the bush, 5 minute lifetime later he looks up and realises he's on his own...and got really confused ๐Ÿ˜…...after a moment of panic we called him and he eventually made his way to us as if he hadn't just panicked and proceeded to follow us closely...and kept checking in every so often to check we were still there๐Ÿ˜… who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

Dusty had her final session. We started off with a dog who would outright refuse to walk further than the driveway, to a dog that can walk mostly on a relatively loose lead along roads...till you get to certain points...and now it's turned to excitement and anticipation of the best walks ever. So we worked a bit on slowing her down and then took on the town square which was a major no go zone. She managed it. She wasn't scared any more, but she was certainly showing learned behaviours. Her owners have homework to just slow her world down so she can process things and take in the world around her as opposed to rushing all the time.

Following yesterday's poll. It was quite interesting to look through your answers.
Most of the you that voted "Yay" have very active/working dogs. And those that voted "Nay" have more anxious/fearful dogs or busy lifestyles.

Personally, for me, it really became essential during my last pregnancy which was a very risky and complicated one, meaning I couldn't really be on my feet for long periods. This meant my dogs were getting very short walks 2 or 3 times a week...

This actually turned out to help Rollo's reactivity towards people, especially when COVID came along and we rarely saw a human on our walks.
This is why I always give my dogs a couple of days off a week. But moreso if I know they've had a stressful few days. For example, when we visit family and we are in a new house, without their usual comforts or walks, in busier areas and they are coming everywhere with us...once we come home ..they get a full 3 days to decompress. And that's actually all they want to do.

Hazel on the other hand, being a young pup with tonnes of energy needs a bit more. But ...and here's the but...
We mix things around.
One day she will have a good off lead run around with structured training or just fun gsmes.
Another just lead walks with loads of training
Another day she just comes with me on a school run drive and back home ..no walk๐Ÿ˜ฑ
Or...she might just pop to the shop/run errands with me and back home.
Mixed into that, she'll have a day where we don't go out at all.

If given the chance, she would happily run and play for 8hr a day and still want more. But that simply is not realistic and wouldn't fit into our lifestyle.
So there's really no right answer...but remember...there will be days where it's too hot to walk your dog...and your dog doesn't know what to do with themselves if they can't go out...or there may be days where you're unwell and just can't move or your dog may be injured and can't go out
Prepare for the worst/unexpected. You don't know what life has in store for you.

We took Hazel on another little adventure round the river. Did some sit ups and balancing at the outdoor gym (she did...not me, don't be silly ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคช) she's still developing the use of her back legs and to begin with she was just flopping off the step, so it took her a couple of attempts to balance without falling off. We faced her fear of heights too and crossed several bridges. She really didn't like the suspension bridge and she almost belly crawled her way over the first couple of times๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ . She was a little more confident afterwards ๐Ÿ˜…. After an amazing job focusing and enjoying a walk together and training I let her enjoy some free ragging of her favourite toy๐Ÿ˜…โค๏ธโค๏ธ

Here's some Hazelnut spam. We often get creative in a mission to give her some breed specific outlets and general enrichment. She absolutely loves a tug and shake, but with her favourite long chaser I often get whacked hard with the ball end of the toy ... I decided to tie it around some outdoor gym equipment and practiced some impulse control and obedience along with the tug game as a reward. She was a little confuzzled by this odd makeshift "spring pole" lol but we just had some light hearted fun whilst maintaining structure through training. She's also starting to understand she has back legs ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜… and will now jump onto every bench she can find๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Don't be fooled by this adorable little puppy face...since arriving at her new home a few weeks ago she has ruled the house and could quite easily get away with murder. This little landshark is called Nellie, she is a fox red bundle of energy, zooming around the house incessantly while her owner tries to provide her with a constant stream of enrichment activities to satiate the shark. This has only made things worse to the point those little needle sharp teeth are constantly biting their legs, feet, hands furniture and clothing.
Today we put an end to her freedom....she now has to earn it. With boundaries firmly in place she will now be able to get much needed sleep and actively learn how to behave appropriately around the house. We also touched on loose lead walking as she so far refuses to walk further than the front of the house....today we made it to the end of the rd and only stopped because we ran out of time.

We teleported to Australia this morning for a session with Eli. His behaviour has really improved but the lead walks and reactivity still happen... mostly with his dad. So today we worked on his dad's timing of rewards as this is really what's slowing down the progress. We also discussed crate training as his toilet training has regressed somewhat (vet checks rule out any medical issues ) . All in all we made some good progress and they'll be working as a team to crack his outdoor skills.

Goku the staffy X mastiff is in his adolescence prime. His goal in life is to get to every sniff at the speed of light, and say hello to every dog and person he can drag his owner to.
He's constantly on the go at home and struggles to chill. Walks have become impossible due to his relentless dragging left right and centre.
Today we worked on owner focus and revamping his relationship with his human so that he is more likely to choose his human over other dogs. He really enjoyed the find it game, but he also LOVES being chased and zooming around with his human so we integrated this into his walks and by the end of it, he was choosing to disengage from other dogs and play with his human. Loose lead walking came along naturally as he wasn't in a rush to get to everything else.

We began our training journey with Daisy yesterday. She's in the process of becoming an assistance dog to her wonderful human A journey of recovery
While she is a super smart doggo and has mastered a whole range of tasks, she struggles with regulating her emotions and when she gets excited, she does very high pitch barking which makes getting ready in the morning very very stressful. She is also super distracted when out on walks and doesn't always respond straight away, to add to this, she is selectively reactive to some dogs.
For her to pass as an assistance dog, she has to overcome these behaviours struggles , so here we are, thinking out of the box on ways that her and her human can train together... This is a very unique opportunity for us working with the most able and optimistic quadruple amputee you'll ever meet and a highly intelligent dog.
Safe to say...practicing not barking for 25 min was enough to frazzle Daisy's brain, after a short walk to see how she was out and about she'd had enough and was ready to nap.

Remember, keep your dogs on a lead around livestock. Don't try to "prove" how well behaved your dog is by walking through a sheep field. Don't allow your dog to approach sheep fields off lead.
Respect the space the sheep or other livestock.
Your dog may be perfectly fine seeing sheep standing still , but the moment 1 sheep runs it is likely that this will trigger your dogs prey drive in the blink of an eye and give chase to that sheep or the others who start running.
Sheep worrying is a criminal offence and a farmer can do whatever necessary to protect their livestock - including shooting your dog dead.
Don't be a t**t, stop invading the space livestock are in and keep them and your dog safe.

Rocket dog had his final session yesterday. He really really struggles to read other dogs social cues. His owners had taken him to puppy classes early on to socialise him, unfortunately groups of puppies bounding around together rarely helps the dogs learn appropriate boundaries as puppies are terrible at doing that. If you have a puppy, you're better off introducing them to older calm dogs so that they learn good doggy etiquette.
He did much better today than he did the last time he was in a group setting, but he struggles to calm himself down at all. This will be work in progress for some time but he will get it.
