Today is but this isn’t just about skipping walks, it’s about having other options and choices instead and thinking about whether a walk is always the best thing for our dogs.
And it’s also about ditching the guilt of not doing one (or more) walks a day.
The outside world can be a very busy and over stimulating place with all of the sights, sounds, movements and smells and this can be highly arousing for our dogs, making it harder for them to switch off and relax.
Have you ever got back from a walk and your dog is a bit manic or finds it hard to calm down and relax?
Some dogs can find every day walks a struggle or a challenge and this can feed into their stress levels and reactivity.
We took a break from walks everyday with Roxy, at one point we even had no walks at all so that we could lower stress levels and have a bit of a reset. Walks were stressful and we all needed a break from them to empty our buckets! Instead we did other activities at home. Even now, we still take breaks from walks and we do other activities on these days or even sometimes just have a complete rest day.
On non walk days we might do some scent games at home, practice our cues or learn new ones, or chill out on the sofa, some days we do hydro, others we go Mantrailing or swimming.
