Horses evolved to cover vast distances over varied terrain.

Their hooves were shaped by movement, not by human intervention.

Just like water smooths a stone, miles of movement on different surfaces create a strong, balanced hoof.

No sharp edges.
No unnatural angles.

So why should we look to evolution when caring for our domesticated horses? 🤔

Because the closer we keep them to what nature intended, the more they thrive.

This applies to their overall health, not just their hooves.

Wild horses adapt to their environment.

Their hooves wear down naturally in response to movement and terrain.

When trimming, we should aim to replicate this natural shaping.

Strong. Balanced. Functional.

Simple ways to introduce more varied terrain and movement:

✅ 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 🏞️🌾
Grass, gravel, sand, and dirt all help hooves wear naturally.

✅ 𝗚𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 🚶‍♀️🏃‍♂️
If riding isn’t an option, walking provides movement without weight on their back.

✅ 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 🪵🪶
Work on grass, gravel, or sand to simulate different terrain.

✅ 𝗔𝗱𝗱 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 🪵⛅
Logs, rocks, and small jumps encourage natural movement patterns.

Respecting your horse’s natural needs builds balance, strength, and resilience.

Rain, rain & more rain has meant mud galore this week… not always the easiest trimming conditions, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. Lots of towels to hand & we manage to get the job done.
Think we are all ready for Spring, sunshine & drier days 🙏🏻

I share this with a heavy heart…

Many of you know I follow lots of groups, that advocate for the free roaming horses in the US.

It’s so sad to loose one so young, Mother Nature can be so cruel 😞

Run, forever free sweet girl, on those perfect little hooves 💔

Shoe removal today. Always a pleasure helping a new client begin their barefoot journey & really excited to see how these feet will change over the coming months…

When removing the shoes it’s important to allow the feet time to ‘breath’ & relax, so minimal trimming, to just ensure the foot is balanced correctly.

Exactly this ⬇️ I see so many shod feet that resemble the top image & because they are so common it’s somehow normalised & excepted, that this is what a healthy foot looks like…
Sadly this couldn’t be further from the truth. Fab transition & transformation by Sophie Bennetts - Foundation First- horse and hoof care 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Toe Length: What was causing this horse's tripping issues❓️

After the owner acquired this horse in his early twenties, we removed his shoes not long after due to ongoing tripping problems.
Upon looking at the hooves when he was shod, we noticed that his heels were nearly the same length as his toes. This meant that the pillar of support had been removed at the toe and the "break over" shortened, which was intended to help with tripping.

However, this actually made the problem worse for several reasons:

➡️ The high heels pushed the pedal bone into an artificially positive position, causing the horse's weight to shift forward onto his toe.
➡️ The shoes reduced the horse's proprioception, or awareness of its hoof position, further contributing to the issue.
➡️ By altering a horse's natural foot balance, it can affect aspects of its movement. This imbalance may cause the horse to compensate by shifting its posture or gait and can disrupt the movement through the horse's leg, affecting the overall fluidity of its stride.

The bottom photo showing the same hoof back to it's natural balance and now happily hacking out without the tripping.

Great visual showing how metal shoes compromise the hoof capsule’s ability to function properly…

Shoes don’t just affect the feet, but the whole posture & biomechanics of the horse.

If all horse owners truely understood the damage metal shoes do to their equine’s feet, they would be consigned to the history books.

If your horse is only sound in shoes, it’s not sound…

I help many owners transition their horses & ponies out of shoes & they are much healthier & happier for it.

Wow!

This is a list of what NOT TO DO!

This is why laminitis is still the 2nd biggest killer of horses.

Below was written by a farrier and is pretty much the standard veterinary and farriery protocols that are inflicted on the majority of laminitic horses

All the horses that come to us with chronic laminitis and we’re pretty close to being PTS had already had all of this done to them

“Shorted breakover” - chop the toes and thin the front of the foot creating even futher risk of exposing P3

“Keeping the heels at an appropriate height” - sky high heels tipping P3 further and further into a hyper positive position.

“The tension of the DDFT on P3” - if the DDFT really did have any “pull” on P3 why is it when we lower the heels to the hard sole plane the horses then recover yet when they are kept high by the farriers they continue to deteriorate?

The current scientific research is flawed and horses are still dying because of it.

Foal slippers ❤️😍

As we head into foal season, I wanted to share this with you. Foals have “fairy slippers” over their hooves to protect mommas uterus and birth canal. Scientifically they are called eponychium, just another miracle of creation!
These soft “feathers” dry up and fall off after birth and the foals hooves harden and are ready for running and romping!
