Rabbit Awareness Week!

Rabbits should be provided with at least their bodyweight in fresh, good quality hay every day as 85% of their daily intake should be hay and grass. A spoonful of high-quality nuggets should be offered, rather than muesli to stop selective feeding and a handful of rabbit-safe greens. This combination aims to provide optimum nutrition and aid digestive and dental health.

With June being Pride Month, it seems apt timing to introduce Acorn House’s EDI committee. Our EDI leaders represent some of the nine protected characteristics, as outlined by the Equality Act 2010. These characteristics include age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, s*x, and s*xual orientation. Their primary objective is to be the voice for the protected groups while celebrating, promoting, and educating others. Our committee include Sara, Tracie, Paul, and Hayley. We will also be holding an in-house cake-sale with proceeds going to Rainbow Bedfordshire.

Remember, if it’s too hot for your hands or your bare feet, then it’s too hot for their paw pads! ⚠️

If you’re unsure whether it’s okay to let your pet go for a walk on pavements, a simple way to test the temperature is by holding your bare skin on the tarmac for five seconds ⏱️

If you find it painful, then your pet will find it painful to walk on!

To protect your pet, it’s best to avoid walks during the hottest part of the day, which is usually between 8am and 6pm. If you can't safely exercise your dog, missing a day won't hurt.

This bundle of cuteness is Kiah, who is a 10 week old cocker spaniel puppy, who came to see vet Rebecca for a new puppy check. Did you know that unless you have any concerns about your new puppy, you should let them settle in with you for at least a few days before bringing them to the vets? This gives them a chance to adapt to their new environment and bond with their new family before visiting us.

This is Humphrey, who came to see vet Rosie for a general health check. Vet Rosie checked him all over, particularly his teeth, which is important for rodents as their teeth grow continuously. She also checked his body score condition and luckily Humphrey has a really good body score condition and an appropriate diet, so is just a rather large pig! Guinea pigs need a diet that is 80% hay, 10% appropriate vegetables, herbs and occassional fruit, 5% high quality pellets and 5% treats and forage mixes.
