POLITE NOTICE: Over the last few weeks we have had multiple stray Cats and Dogs brought into our practice who have microchips but their owners details are not up-to-date. This prevents us from being able to contact the owners and reunite them with their beloved pets.

Please check that your pets microchip details are current and up-to-date and update them if needed.

Many Thanks, Team Scott Vets

Many of us give our pets medication to stop them from getting parasites, but have you ever wondered how they work? 🐶🐱

There are different types of treatments that can be given to your pet, and these usually consist of oral medication 💊 or a product that you apply to their skin. 💧

Some medications will paralyse the worms making them detach from the intestinal wall, allowing them to be passed through your pets' faeces. Most modern medications, though, will dissolve roundworms altogether.

If left untreated, parasites, such as roundworms, can cause serious health problems for our furry friends - Make sure that you pet has full parasite coverage by speaking to us today.

How do you know if your dog has whipworm? Well, unfortunately there aren’t many obvious symptoms until there is a heavy parasitic burden. These symptoms include:

🐶 Increased lethargy

🐶 Dehydration

🐶 Low red blood cells

🐶 Diarrhoea containing blood

Of course, your dog can still have these symptoms and not be infected with whipworm.

🩺 Always get your dog checked by one of our vets if they’re unwell, but most of all, treat them with a suitable anti -parasite drug.

Speak to us today for more information.

‼️‼️CAT MICROCHIP LAW CHANGES‼️‼️

New legislation set out by the government states that, by the 10th June 2024, all owners must have their cats microchipped before they reach the age of 20 weeks.

Microchipping is a quick and easy procedure that can be performed at our practice, alongside your kitten or puppies vaccinations, or in a consultation with one of our nurses. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is placed under the skin between the shoulder blades. This microchip has a unique number which is linked to the owners details meaning that if the cat is found lost, it can be reunited with its owners quickly.

If you would like more information on microchipping your pet, or would like to book a nurse appointment for a microchip placement, please contact our reception team on 01234 261622. Thank you.

With lungworm slowly making its way throughout the UK, it’s important that we understand how this emerging disease is contracted in the first place.

You’ll be pleased to hear that lungworm cannot be passed from one pet to another, which helps to slow down the spread of lungworm.

Lungworms live in slugs and snails where they have time to grow and develop. If your pet was to then ingest one of these slimy critters, they are then at risk of contracting lungworm. 🐌

Once infected, they can then shed lungworm larvae in their faeces which then infects more slugs and snails.

Thankfully, lungworm can be prevented through regular prescription strength medication. 💊

Speak to us today to cover your pet with lungworm prevention!

FELINE OSTEOARTHRITIS: Caring for a cat with arthritis
As well as modifying your home to make it more friendly for your arthritic cat, there are some additional things you can do to ensure your cat is happy and healthy.

Cats with arthritis may find it difficult to groom themselves, so, if they will allow, you can gently brush or groom them daily to help prevent their fur getting matted. Bear in mind your cat’s joints may be a bit sore so go slowly at first and let them guide you on whether it is comfortable for them.

Your cat may also find it difficult to use their usual scratch post and as a result their claws can become overgrown; your veterinary practice will be able to trim your cats claws regularly so keep in touch with them to do this.

Lastly, cats with arthritis still want to hunt and play, albeit a little slower than before.
Continue to play with your cat for a few minutes two to three times a day. This keeps
their mind active and will fend off problem behaviours that may occur as a result of
not being able to hunt freely outside.

If you would like help or advice on grooming or claw clipping from our nursing team, please contact us on 01234 261622.
