At not even 6 months old yet, Abi's owners were very concerned when she developed a severe cough and laboured breathing. When she was referred to Earlswood Veterinary Hospital, she was quickly investigated with thoracic radiographs and a thoracic CT. Poor Abi was diagnosed with bronchopneumonia, which in puppies is often infectious. Thankfully with appropriate treatment Abi has made a full recovery and is feeling so much better!

Innovative technique for intrahepatic shunt closure at SCVS

An intrahepatic shunt is an abnormal connection between the veins of the gastrointestinal tract which carry many toxins from digestion and the rest of the body. Toxins entering the rest of the body via the abnormal shunt causes many problems (e.g. neurologic signs, bladder stones, gastrointestinal bleeding, …) for the patients. Closing the shunt gives the patients which otherwise can only eat a special liver diet and need to take life-long medications, a normal life. Due to the intrahepatic nature of this, abnormal connection closure is very challenging and more widely available methods often don’t achieve a complete closure and problems often persist/re-occur.

SCVS has started intrahepatic shunt closures in cooperation with Prof Matthias Schneider (University of Giessen) using an innovative technique. The technique has been developed by Prof Schneider for more than a decade. Having successfully treated more than 100 patients with this technique at the University of Giessen, Germany. SCVS is now one of the first veterinary referral centres taking up this method outside Germany. Lolly and Chester have successfully undergone this intrahepatic shunt closure using a specially designed coil.

Only the amazing facilities of SCVS, teamwork, advanced experience in minimal invasive interventional medicine at SCVS and co-operation with Matthias Schneider (University of Giessen, Germany) make it possible bringing this advanced and innovative procedure to the UK. Tobi, Matthias, Darren, Giulia, Giovanni, Kostas, Kathryn, Laura, Holly, Jen, Jackie, Max and the entire team at SCVS wish Chester and Lolly a fantastic recovery.

We look forward to seeing some photos of Chester and Lolly eating normal dog food as soon as their liver has completely recovered from the shunt closure!
