Hutchy - Ventral Slot Surgery
In June 2023, Hutchy collapsed one day out on her walk and was left tetraplegic (unable to move any of her legs). Hutchy was referred to our team by Cromlyn House Veterinary Hospital for investigation.
MRI scan revealed a disc herniation in the cervical section of her spine (C3-C4). Our Orthopaedic Surgeon, Gregory Dunlop, MA VetMB CertSAS, performed a ventral slot surgery to decompress the cervical spinal cord by removing extruded disc material and thickened dorsal annulus.
As an inpatient Hutchy received daily physiotherapy with our colleagues at Holistic Pet NI and hydrotherapy with Sarah from the Earlswood Veterinary team.
Hutchy’s dedicated owners brought her back initially on a daily basis for extensive hydrotherapy and continued to stay committed to her physiotherapy throughout her recovery process.
As you can see from the video with hard work from Vets, physiotherapy team and her owners. Hutchy is back enjoying life at full speed again!

Ever wonder what roles are involved with being a Veterinary Nurse?

Underwater Treadmill
Have you ever wondered what an underwater treadmill (UWT) session looks like at Earlswood Veterinary? Watch the video below!
What is an UWT? - UWT is a treadmill specifically designed for canines to aid rehabilitation and strengthening, using the properties of water.
What conditions can an UWT help with? - Lots! From helping pets recovering from surgery (spinal, hip replacement, cruciate etc), to arthritis, neurological conditions, weight loss and improving fitness of a competition dog.
What advantages could you expect to see from a pet using the UWT? - As the speed is controlled, it can be used as resistance to build muscle in neurological cases or at moderate speeds used with the buoyancy of the water can improve the range of movement around arthritic joints. Combining water temperature and hydrostatic pressure creates an environment to reduce swelling, aid recovery and enhance healing.
Who will my pet treated by at EVH UWT? - All pets are assessed by our veterinarian colleagues from Holistic Pet NI. Collaborating with our Sport Scientist provides individualised treatment plans for all of our patients. This provides a pioneering approach for pet rehabilitation.
Please contact the practice for any additional information or to start your pets UWT programme.

Pussycat is a gorgeous 14 year old Siberian Forest cat who visited us last month to have a dental procedure.
Pussycat also has a heart condition that was investigated by our visiting Cardiology
Specialist Stephen Collins. This condition is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy which means his heart muscle is thicker than normal reducing the volume of blood that his
heart can pump.
This meant that he had an increased anaesthetic risk for his dental, luckily for Pussycat Vets Orla and Sarah came up with a special anaesthetic protocol for Pussycat that would be gentle on his heart. During the dental Nurse Tanya kept a close eye on Pussycat's heart and breathing throughout.
Pussycat required 3 tooth extractions and recovered from his procedure really well. He's now back home and eating well.
