Name: Duke
Breed: Short haired Chihuahua
S*x: Male
Age: 6 years
Colour: White
Weight: 3.3kg
House Trained: Yes
Lead Trained: Yes
Likes dogs: Yes some, Duke seems to respect dogs who are confident and can look after themselves, not worried if he is grumpy and growly towards them and can put him in his place if there is a little squabble.
Like cats: Not tested, was reactive to cats in his own garden, but ignores them on walks
Info: Duke needs a very particular owner and home, please do not apply unless you can meet his specific requirements:
Duke had 3 previous homes that we are aware of, (it may be more)? He was rescued from the first home (if this was his first home?)to get him away from a bad situation as he was being abused. We feel that this poor boy has been pushed to the limit, to the point of no return. Duke was much loved in his last home where he lived for 2 years, however, he had a trust issue with the owners husband and visitors and unfortunately they were unable to stop his unpredictable behaviour, dominance, jealous/guarding aggression and biting.
We immediately had Duke neutered (which has helped immensely) and gave him time to decompress and chill out. He can be a calm and loving boy who loves his cuddles and has shown no aggression to males or visitors in rescue, (he adores my husband) however, he can be unpredictable, happy one day, grumpy the next, when he may bite for no reason and with little warning. When we say “bite” it is not a quick snap, he means business, moves quickly and once he makes contact can bite several times in one go. Happily, this is much less than when he first came in and when he feels like this he needs to be left alone, he doesn’t like any gentle coaxing or treats.
We are looking for a dog savvy owner who has some knowledge in dog behaviour and dominance and is able to understand Dukes language and act accordingly to keep it at bay and to leave him alone when he is not feeling happy. No shrinking violets please or anyone who is looking for a lap dog to spoil, as he will be the wrong dog for you. Duke needs boundaries, sleep in his own basket and have his owner and other dogs in the home as his leader until he settles in and finds his place to be comfortable without the need to challenge or prove himself.
We absolutely love Duke and he is a wonderful little dog. He loves his walks, to follow you around, play with his toys and to run with the DCR male dogs. He needs a quiet, calm, loving and understanding home, to bring out the best in him and give him the time that he needs to help his sometimes challenging behaviour and to be part of the family on his own terms.
