Trigger stacking

I think we have all seen instances where horses seem to "explode" out of nowhere. But if we take a closer look, it wasn't out of nowhere at all.  But is usually small instances that started influencing each other to cause a major response. This is called trigger stacking.

Tigger stacking is defined as ‘Stress accumulation due to exposure of multiple triggers, either simultaneously or close enough in time that the horse’s reactivity has not returned to normal.’ (Grisha Stewart, BAT 2.0, P. 276)

For example, a horse that is dealing with undiagnosed ulcers and his rider wants to go out on a hack. The horse is uncomfortable but his owner has not seen his signs of discomfort. Usually they go out on a hack with a friend but today they are hacking out alone, horse starts feeling nervous about going out alone and starts being fidgety and displaying seperation anxiety behaviours, the rider ignores the signs because it has never bothered the horse before.

The horse now feels uncomfortable, stressed and a bit fearfull about being alone and being in pain due to ulcers. The rider sees nothing wrong (bc the signs are not obvious). Suddenly a cyclist passes by and the horse spooks and is in the beginning stages of a flight response. The rider urges the horse forward with a kick or other form of pressure or punishment, not thinking much of it bc the horse never spooks. And then suddenly a plastic bag just moves wrong and the horse bolts, in full flight mode.

The rider might think that the trigger was the plastic bag, but in reality it was multiple triggers all stacked on top of each other.

Knowing what triggers stacking is and how it applies to horses is not only beneficial for our horses welfare and wellbeing but also to our safety as riders and trainers.

The meadow fields are getting ready for hay making & the horses are getting to grips with their summer track system. This year we have installed a 1.2km track over 10 acres. This initially began as an experiment for the horses that are prone to laminitis. It worked so well, we decided to extend it several months ahead of schedule. For the winter months, horses will then free graze the rested paddocks.

Researchers have created a new, mobile device that detects brain waves in horses and can help them detect their feelings, which could eventually be used with other species.

Already producing interesting results, Cousillas and Hausberger teamed up with Rennes ethologist Mathilde Stomp to take EEG recordings of 18 horses. Half lived in individual stalls in a classic, confined stable, whereas the other half roamed with herds on open pastures.

The two groups had very different EEG profiles. Horses in stables showed an average of 2.5 times more right-hemisphere "gamma" waves than those in open fields. In people, such waves are often a sign of anxiety, distraction, or depression. The horses that spent most of their time out in the open, meanwhile, showed twice as many left-hemisphere "theta" waves on average—generally a sign of a calm and attentive mind, the team reports this month in Applied Animal Behaviour Science. "What's really exciting about these results is that they give us a rare measure of ‘happiness,' so to speak," Hausberger says.

The headband has been called a "real breakthrough" by Katherine Houpt, a veterinary behaviourist at Cornell University who was not involved in the project but highlighted the benefits of getting into animals' minds with objectivity and less guesswork.

It's an exciting step in the world of equitation science and bettering the welfare of horses.
