We’ve had this lovely well dressed boy brought in to us this afternoon.
Unfortunately the phone number on his microchip is incorrect so we’re unable to contact his owners.
He will be collected by the dog warden at some point this evening to be kept safe overnight.

It's World Blood Donor Day! To celebrate the generous & life-saving donations of our blood donor superheroes, we've awarded two families with a very special award.

Meet Spike, who's won the ACT Canine Blood Donor of the Year Award! Shown here with Katie, the daughter of Spike's owner Paula , Spike has made a whopping 13 donations!

Katie explains how they got involved with Blood Donor Programme:

"Mum saw an appeal online asking for blood donors, and particularly this breed, so he went in for some tests to check he was suitable and he’s been going in ever since. Spike loves giving blood, he really doesn’t care at all. He gets so many treats. He skips through the door and doesn’t look back!"

There are more than 200 heroic dogs and cats saving lives through the RVC's Blood Donation Programme. Last year the service carried out almost 700 transfusions. Katie tells us:

"They have so many major surgeries over at the RVC and I think people forget that dogs need to give blood just as much as humans. It’s definitely worth doing and I think more people should do it.”

Charlotte Russo, Head of Transfusion Medicine Nurse at the RVC explains:

"We are always looking for more blood group ‘negative’ canine donors - so dobermans, greyhounds, flat coat retrievers, German shepherds and ‘staffies’ are often ideal. As always, if someone has a big happy relaxed dog of any breed and they meet the requirements – we would very much welcome them!”

The blood donation service is voluntary and we rely on the goodwill of local pet owners who bring their pets to donate blood. We'd like to thank all of our blood donor family for the commitment they make to the programme, helping the RVC to save lives.

Katie says:

“There’s so many amazing dogs on the programme. They all do such good things and save so many lives. A big thank you for choosing Spike to be the ACT Canine Blood Donor of the Year. We’re so proud of him”
