Does anyone recognise this cat?
This Tabby, neutered male cat was hanging around Dickens Walk and then taken to Falkland Vets. He has been hanging around that area for quite sometime. Very affectionate, lovely cat, although he has been making a nuisance of himself in the area found with other cats. If anyone has any information please contact Falkland vet on 01635 46565 or our centre on 01635 200111.

It's Toola's birthday!
Much like our monarch, she has two birthdays, one is her official birthday as recorded with the microchip database (today), the other is her real birthday which can only be estimated.
As many of you know Toola is our feral, working cat who lives on site keeping the rodent population in check.

So what IS a feral cat, and how are they different from stray cats?

Stray cat
Stray cats are socialised domestic cats who don't - or don't appear - to have an owner. Be wary; even if they 'stray' they might be a neighbourhood cat who's worked out that if they look hungry they can bag themselves a second meal!

Feral cat
Feral cats are the same species of cat as our pet cats, but are not socialised to humans or the domestic environment. This means they behave like wild animals.
You can find out more by visiting the Cats Protection website here:
https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/lost-found-and-feral-cats/feral-cat

What makes a cat feral?
Cats learn what is normal at a very young age, during what is known as a 'socialisation period.' Between the ages of two to six weeks, kittens can learn to enjoy human contact, forming a bond and becoming great pets.

Feral cats are usually the offspring of stray, feral or abandoned cats and have missed out on this early experience, making them likely to be wary of humans.

In Toola's case, she came in to Berkshire Cat Centre with young kittens whom we were able to socialise and rehome, but Toola found being indoors and around people VERY stressful indeed. In these cases we look for homes on farms, at stables, or garden nurseries, where the cat can live an outside life while still being cared for with a regular food supply and medical care if needed. As we had a significant rodent population here, Toola was able to stay with us.

Feral cats, or those born wild, are equally protected in law as domestic cats and are more susceptible to disease. Simply removing feral cats isn't a long-term solution - a new colony will often move in.
The best option is to neuter all of the feral cats within as short a time frame as possible, reducing the size of the colony.

Part of our work at Berkshire Cat Centre is helping to control feral colonies by neutering where and when we can. If you would like to make a donation to help us, visit https://www.cats.org.uk/donate?b=374

MISSING
Please look out for little Ron who has not been seen since Tuesday 30th July. It’s unlikely he’ll let you stroke him but if anyone sees him please get in touch as his owners just want to know he’s okay and then figure out how to get him home. He's missing from Spring Gardens RG20 area in Newbury and his owners hope he’s not gone far, but his sister was run over a few weeks ago and they're worried he’s gone looking for her 😞
Please check sheds, garages and outbuildings and if you see him or have any information, please let us know. Many thanks.

Good News Adoption Story
Meet Tinkerbell, a friendly cat who loves affection and is a great family cat. Tinkerbell came into Cats Protection’s care back in March, as her owners' circumstances changed, and they could no longer afford to keep her. Tinkerbell did have hyperthyroidism, so she underwent surgery to treat this and has had no issues since.
Initially, she was rehomed to a young family, but unfortunately this did not work out for Tinkerbell, as the daughter developed a cat allergy. However, a lovely new family came into Tinkerbell’s world.
Tinkerbell has settled in beautifully and her new owners have sent in regular updates with photos and a video of Tinkerbell playing. The introductions with the family’s existing cat and dog are going well.
Well done Tinkerbell and family.

Just like us, our cats can be affected by warmer weather. While they may enjoy lying in sunny spots, there is such a thing as too warm – even for a cat!
Find out how to keep your cat cool below.

Although many cats love to soak in the sunshine in warm weather, you should make sure that you keep your cat safe from the sun. Find out more.

Are your cats' microchip details up to date?

It's something that can easily be overlooked but if you move, change your email address or phone number, make sure you update the microchip database they are registered with.

If your cat is found, a vet or rescue could be trying to contact you.

Even if your cat is not 'lost' they can wander and be believed to be stray. Having up to date details means they can be identified, and you can be contacted if they are taken to a vet or rescue centre (you may also get an interesting insight as to where they go as part of their day!)

If you haven't got your cats' microchip number you can contact your vet to find out if they have a record of it or ask them to scan your cat to find it.

Visit our website:

Our Story

Hello from all of us here at Newbury Adoption Centre. Our branch has been rescuing and re-homing cats since 1965. In 1994, thanks to the kindness of the branch's founder Mrs Irene Earnshaw, we were able to open a 42 pen Adoption Centre and continue the good work in her memory.

2014 saw the opening of Cats Protections first 'satellite centre' at Pets at Home in Newbury, which enabled us to achieve a record of 590 homes found for cats and kittens in our care.

Early 2016, due to the kindness and generosity of a supporter we were able to replace the 20+ year old cattery with more spacious cat pens and a purpose built Isolation unit.
