A-Z Exotics

A-Z Exotics Bridging the gap between animal science & society A-Z Exotics is brought to you by husband and wife team Karl & Laura Hudson.
(62)

Between us both we have over 30 years of paid practical animal industry experience, the majority of which involved the care and welfare of exotic animals in Zoo's. On top of that we also both hold a BSc Honours Degree in Animal Behaviour. Because of our unique background we have spent many years looking after Exotic pets for friends and family while they were away on holiday. During which time, si

milar comments would arise about how difficult it is to source individuals or businesses that are able to cater for exotic animals. From this we identified a strong need for such a service to exist and hence A-Z was born! We aim to remove the hassle for our customers by providing custom made and suitable environments for your pets to go right into, giving you total piece of mind while you are away. So far we have adapted our home to be able to accommodate an extensive range of exotic animals, our main features being our Reptile Suite and Tortoise Lodge.

What’s the most interesting observation we have seen in our work to date? 🤔

We have a group of elderly Tortoise clients who use us on a regular basis 🐢

All of the Tortoises in this group are 60 plus years & since the day they were purchased many moons ago, have been kept exclusively outdoors in natural sun during milder & summer months, then hibernated during winter – most likely due to the simpler advice given ‘back in the day’.

The interesting pattern we distinctly noted wirh all of these Tortoises is they all show practically zero outward signs of abnormal shell growth & pyramiding (see 70 year old Cinderfella in photo) – an occurrence which is now very commonly seen in modern captive Tortoise keeping & has shown to be problematic.

However, these Tortoises all have super smooth even shells just like their wild counterparts 🐢

As many of you are aware, we are big advocates for natural light, natural foraging & a 'wild' like set up & this fascinating observation really powerfully reinforces this notion ☀️

Please bear with us!

August is our busiest month of the whole year! We are also focusing on family across this time.

This means we haven’t been able to dedicate the time we usually do to social media content.

We have lots planned though, so keep your eyes peeled 👀

Hope your all enjoying the summer?? ☀️

Cute Bearded Dragons eating their greens! 😍

Wild adult Beardie diets actually consist of around 60-80% plant matter – live food needs to be offered signifcantly less than most of us are led to believe.

👉Transitioning to mostly plant matter could actually save you a ton of time & money! ⏲️💰

👉Want more information on this?

D.M. us & we will send you a copy of our Bearded Dragon Care Guide which covers this in more detail.

It’s always a real honour when a client travels a great distance to us 😃🚗

We never however anticipated that someone would ever travel 130 miles to use our services! 😮

Thank you Helen & DeeDee the Bearded Dragon for going that extra ‘mile’! 🦎🙏

One of the biggest animal myths going has got to be that Tortoises 🐢 are inactive & super slow....🐌

Think the Tortoise & The Hare! 🐢🐇

However, healthy Tortoises are actually very active & pretty dam fast when they want to be!

If you have a Tortoise & a garden, a great idea is to Tortoise proof it & remove anything toxic so they can free roam to there hearts content ❤️😃

Its also great fun & pretty amusing watching them ‘explore’ & see what antics they get up to.

ENRICHMENT – where does the need for ‘stimulation’ actually stem from? 🤔

It really bottles down to survival!

👉The wild environment of many animals are vast, complex & full of natural challenges.

👉To compensate for this, the brain overtime has slowly evolved to be highly driven in functions such as curiosity, problem solving & seeking out constant novel/new situations.
If an animal lacked these drives, its survival would have been threatened.

👉When we think of it this way, it makes sense why this drive is so inherently strong. It is hardwired into animal biology as a means of ensuring survival & remains somewhat untouched by captivity.

👉This especially rings true for many species of Parrot, who originate from environments which ‘force’ them to spend hours every day flying, foraging & socialising 🦜

👉In addition, we can also apply this exact principle to us humans too. Consider how difficult we all found lock down! Back in the day of ‘the wild’ we also lived In environments which constantly challenged us & the idea of bordem likely wouldn’t even be a concept or emotion expressed when surviving in nature.

What can we do to support this drive?

👉Of course the level of drive will depend on factors such as individual species, genetics & upbringing. Also there is still a lot of don’t yet know on this subject.

👉However, the great news is our animals can benefit vastly from many simple things we can provide at home.

Keep your eyes peeled for some enrichment ideas guides coming soon! 👀

People often ask us what’s the ‘correct’ sized housing I need for my pet? 🤔

The truth is there Is no such thing. Just like there's no correct size for us humans!

Of course there are minimum standard guidelines for many commonly kept pets, however sometimes it can be more beneficial to not focus on these.

We usually say, think about how much space & stimulation is offered in the wild environment & taking that on board, aim to provide as much as you possibly can with what you have. Or alternatively look at ways you can incorporate opportunity’s for additional space, stimulation & excercise outside of your pets initial enclosure.

In almost all circumstances, bigger is always better! 😃

Why is nutrition so bloody confusing?? 🤔

👉 An animals wild environment naturally ‘balances’ what they need to eat. This intricate process happens through millions of years of evolution 🌏

👉 However, its not just what an animal eats that is determined by the environment through evolution, but also how the nutrients found in different foods all interact with one another once in the body.

👉 And....how this nutrition is utlised by the body is then further influenced by factors in the immediate environment such as natural light, temperature & even humidity.

👉 Essentially, everything in each specific environment has evolved to work together in harmony & is naturally kept near perfectly ‘balanced’.

👉 If we were to remove even one element the whole process can be shifted in some way, a bit like a domino effect.

👉 Research can suggest a food which an animal would consume naturally in the wild as a good option to provide in captivity.

👉 However you then have a whole host of Influencing external factors & variables to contend with. Hence this is often where all the conflicting Information comes into play!

👉 So, it’s perfectly normal to feel completely lost, & confused by the whole subject of nutrition. Its an absolute minefield!

Our gut instincts are never wrong! 💪

When people ask us how we have made our brand work despite having no business background, we often reapond with one statement & that is if it feels right then it probably Is.

Seems way too simple but so far this approach has seldom failed us!

In todays society, we are constantly told to ignore our feelings.

“Your overreacting”, paranoid or too sensitive.

But the truth is, ‘feelings’ are a fundamental part of our evolutionary biology designed to alert, motivate & navigate us through life.

To steer us in the right direction and move us away from negative situations & people that might threaten our well-being.

When we decide to unlock, listen to & embrace those emotions, we don’t just harness that power to our advantage but we also gain a liberating sense of control which is all too often stripped from us through societal pressures.

Pursue what makes you ‘feel’ good & surround yourself with people who give you good ‘feelings’ ❤️

We do everything in our power we believe to be ‘right’ & yet it still happens.

Sadly, this is a common occurrence & despite feeling responsible this is often NOT the direct fault of the keeper.

In our opinion there are two main contributing factors to this 👇

👉 Firstly, there are theory’s that suggest many animals actively conceal signs of disease (sometimes for years). This is an evolved survival strategy & something we have no control over.

👉 If we team this with the fact many exotic animals have little relatable expression or body language to us humans, this can make it extra challenging to effectively ‘read’ them & identify possible subtle signs of ill health. We personally believe this to be more the case rather than the idea animals are actively ‘hiding’ their symptoms from us.
👉 Furthermore not all potentially harmful diseases nesscecarly cause symptoms.

👉 Secondly
There is still ALOT we don’t know about the relationship between captive environments & the impact on health outcomes in these animals.

So what can we do? 🤔

Preventative care is a must!

Locate a good exotics specialist veterinarian & book in for regular routine health checks – any great specialist vet will be able to advise what is best.

👉 Not only will you be helping to prevent potential disease, it is also a great opportunity to regularly & easily gather up to date & reliable information from a professional in the field.

For many of our clients who have gone down this route, we have had nothing but great feedback! 🐢🦜🦎🐇🐍

Three years ago today we took in our very first boarder, a Bearded Dragon! 😃

And What an incredible three years it’s been 💪

Naive & pretty clueless 🙈, we had never stepped foot into business in our lives!

But it’s safe to say its definitely where we belong – yes very cheesy but true 🙈

But, the exotic boarding has never just been about filling a gap in the market .....

When we first sat down to plan our business around four years ago, one of our original & biggest long term goals was to use the boarding to build a platform to spread important messages.

Time to get honest .....

When you have worked in the industry as long as we both have, its heartbreaking to say, the negative unfortunately outweighs the positives 😞

The neglect, exploitation & suffering we have both witnessed over the years has been, well ...... overwhelming.

So much so at one point we both even admitted we didn’t want to have anything to do with the animal industry anymore & even experienced feelings of shame associated with it.

However, we eventually came to the realisation that we can take a lifetime of knowledge & hard work & throw it down the drain, or instead channel it into something positive & at least attempt to make a real difference.

Not just helping animals, but also you as animal keepers, in an industry riddled with incredibly poor advice, chronic shaming & conflicting information.

Looking after your exotic animals doesn’t just allow us to support ourselves financially. It gives us the opportunity to study & include them in invaluable work & promoting important messages.

When you bring your animals to us for boarding or interact with our content, its not just a business transaction, you are all contributing towards those positive changes.

We all want what’s best for our animals so let’s work together to make this happen! 💪

As always, Thank you for your support

A fun fact to liven up your Sunday evening!

Reptiles & Birds can see 100 million colours, whereas us humans can ‘only’ see 10 million! 👀🌈

However Reptiles & Birds are only able to see this extensive range when under direct natural sunlight, more specifically the UV part of the suns ultraviolet spectrum, which is unfortunately mostly filtered out by glass.

This incredible adaptation is known as Tetrachromacy.

What else do we still not yet know about the incredible relationship between animals & natural sunlight?? Probably a lot! 🤔 ☀️
