Do you know what to do (and what not to do!) if you see somebody struggling in the water?

Picture the scene, you are enjoying your day on the beach, you've had a lovely ice cream and had a swim in our (warm?) water.

But then you spot somebody in the water, struggling...

So what do you do?

Here's what:
⛱️ Do not enter the water!
⛱️ Shout to the person and tell them to FLOAT
⛱️ Tell them to stay calm
⛱️ Use your mobile phone to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard
⛱️ Keep the person in sight so that you can help direct help when it arrives
⛱️ Try to stop anybody else entering the water!

So why do we tell you not to go into the water yourself?

Real life incidents show that when other people enter the water to try and help, they often become casualties themselves.

That means that when the lifeboat arrives on scene, they suddenly have more than one person to rescue which takes more time.

The same is true if your dog struggles in the water. In most cases your dog will get themselves out but sadly owners have died from entering the water to try and assist.

Rip currents can be difficult to spot, but have the power to sweep even the strongest and experienced beachgoer out to sea – some reaching speeds 3 times faster than an Olympic swimmer! βš‘οΈπŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

If you can, always choose a lifeguarded beach, swim between the yellow and red flags and take advice from the lifeguards πŸŸ₯🟨

How to break the grip of a rip:

🌊 Don’t try to swim against it or you’ll get exhausted
🌊 If you can stand, wade don’t swim
🌊 If you can, swim parallel to the shore until free of the rip and then head for shore
🌊 Raise your hand, shout for help

If you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 Coastguard
