Important notice

Thank you for bearing with us during our closure over the summer period. Due to personal circumstances, I have had to weigh up whether or not I can continue to run the rescue for the time being. I have decided that for now, with a new baby on the horizon, I realistically need to close the rescue. This is not a decision I've taken lightly as local rescues are struggling with the sheer amount of poorly and injured hedgehogs. However, after a busy few years caring for over 500 hedgehogs, it is now time I focus on my family and my own health.
All the hogs currently in care, will remain with us until they are ready for release.
I want to personally thank our amazing foster carers Nikki, Gail and Dave for their huge contribution to the rescue and to every single person that has supported us with donations.

Going forward, we will be working alongside the amazing Wolds Hedgehog Rescue. This means we can continue to care for hedgehogs in need without the added pressures that come with running a rescue. Please help support them by giving them a like on Facebook.

For details of other local rescues please search www.yorkshirehedgehogs.co.uk

Thank you for your understanding 🧡

Some good news, 9 releases 🥳

Hufflepuff and Quill both left a few days ago and then today we've said goodbye to Sonic, Twig, Star, Bumble, Rose, Sausage and Skipper!

With the current heat, it's vital that hogs being released go to gardens with support feeding and water bowls in place.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in getting these guys back where they belong. It's been a bit of military operation today but its been worth it to get to this stage 😊🦔

A big thank you for the recent donations of food, newspapers, gloves and syringes. This picture is just a fraction of the generous donations people have sent 🧡 🦔

Whilst we are still unable to take in new admissions due to personal circumstances, we still have a fair few prickly friends in to care for, so these supplies are hugely appreciated

02/08/2022

EDIT: NOW SORTED. THANK YOU

Can you help?

We are looking for a release garden in Brough. If you meet the following criteria please send us a message 😊

* must have evidence of visiting hogs (poo on the lawn/hogs feeding in the garden etc)
* a vacant hog house or shelter
* be prepared to provide water and supplementary food each evening
* the garden must not be enclosed. The hedgehog needs to be able to come and go freely
*ponds must be covered or have ramps leading out of them
*must be able to collect from us in Walkington on a date to be agreed

Please only message if you meet all of the criteria on this occasion. Thank you 🦔

Sally's turn to leave us tonight 🥳

Sally arrived with masses of ticks which can indicate another illness. Luckily nothing untoward was found, and after removing over 60 ticks, she has been released back to her garden. She came in at a healthy 800g and was released at over a 1kg so she's certainly enjoyed the B&B 😅

A big thank you to her finder for collecting her and for the donation 🧡

So I had planned on announcing we'd re-opened today but word got out and 4 hoglets of varying sizes have turned up through the day 🙈

On the upside, we have managed one release, Rose. She was collected by her finders this evening to return to her lovely supportive garden 🥳. A huge thank you to her finders for their very generous donation of supplies 🧡

A quick update on a few releases over the last couple of weeks.
Edward, Ozzy, Poppy, Trevor and Maisie have all regained their freedom and have lovely supportive gardens to enjoy🥳
Thank you to everyone involved and for the kind donations from the finders 🧡

⭐️Temporarily Closed ⭐️

During our temporary closure this week, we still ended up taking in another 7 emergency admissions. Therefore, we unfortunately will remain closed for a while longer.
We have a few releases on the horizon and a special thank you goes to Gail and Dave who took another 5 off my hands for foster care 🧡

However, behind the scenes we are working flat out and are beyond exhausted. As well as giving up our 'spare' time, completely voluntarily, we also have to work to pay the bills and look after young children.

Please be prepared to play your part by having the numbers of your local rescues on hand, and be prepared to transport the hog to a rescue or vet wherever possible.

⭐️TEMPORARILY CLOSED⭐️

Unfortunately we are now at capacity and to maintain a high standard of care, we will not be taking any new admissions until Friday at the earliest.

This is not ideal given the heat over the next few days and the expected influx of poorly hedgehogs.

You can help all wildlife by offering shallow dishes of water throughout the garden. Hedgehogs will also appreciate dry cat/kitten/hedgehog food in an evening too.

PLEASE make a note of the numbers for other rescues by visiting www.yorkshirehedgehogs.co.uk

Time is of the essence when a hog is out during the day so please box them up and contact a rescue immediately. Do not be tempted to keep them overnight or a few days (no matter how cute they look). They will urgently need specialist care.

Hedgehogs and especially Hoglets need keeping warm and getting to a rescue or vet as fast as possible. Speed can save lives.

Not quite sure where to start today...

The day started with 2 hoglets that sadly passed before we could do anything.

Then through the afternoon we've had 6 admissions, 4 hoglets under 80g (from various gardens), 1 dehydrated juvenile at 279g and 1 very large 1kg female who was walking slowly in the road 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔

To end on a high this evening, Cactus, who came to us at around 10 days old, was released into a supportive garden 🧡

Thank you to everyone involved in all of these rescues

So after an unusually quiet June, we are now making up for it in July 😅.

Another 5 hogs today 😱

Bumble 235g and siblings Sonic 107g and Twig 100g all arrived after being found alone in gardens during the day.

Pongo 535g arrived with a week old puncture wound on his side. The smell was horrific but it's now been cleaned up and medications started. He has not stopped eating since arrival 🤞

Sadly our 5th 'admission' passed away whilst on route 😢

Thank you to all the finders who took the time to bring the hogs to rescue. At this time of year, it can be incredibly difficult for rescuers to leave their rescues to collect hogs as all of our time is taken up with sick and orphaned hogs as well as the usual tasks of looking after family and working to pay the bills! 😴

So silly me thought I'd try to do some gardening tonight 🙈. Note to self, do not make plans, the hogs will know!

Anyway, 8pm, these two arrived. Both from Walkington, Hufflepuff is an angry ball of spikes, despite weighing only 171g! S/he was found in an enclosed garden and is underweight. I suspect s/he has wandered away from mum and got through a tiny gap 🦔

Laura was out in a garden this evening, and from the video her finder sent in, we could see she was on the skinny side. She is very underweight and dehydrated and as she passed some lovely green poo on transit, we could immediately test it. She has a triple whammy of parasitic burdens and will start her medications once rehydrated 🦔

Thank you to both finders for getting these two to us.

A third hog was due imminently but sadly s/he passed away before reaching us 😢

Chloe was another arrival today. At 118g, she was found out alone and cold.

She had maggots in her eye and groin and more eggs in her fur 😔

Now free of these, she's cosy in the incubator and has taken some milk after being rehydrated. Hopefully she's got here in time to pull through 🤞

Thank you to Fiona for immediately realising she required urgent help and for getting her here 🧡

The latest admission is this poor soul who was suffering from balloon syndrome. You can see the difference in size in the before and after photos. After draining over 800ml of air from under her skin, and starting her on the necessary medications, she can finally roll again and wasted no time in emptying a bowl of biscuits

She's not out of the woods yet, and I also suspect she may be pregnant but we have everything crossed for her.

I want to say a special thank you to her finder, Wendy. Wendy set off to the shops at 3pm and immediately came across this hog. She spent the next 3 hours of her day trying to get help. I was contacted at 4.30pm and with the help of local police officers and passers by for directions when she got lost, Wendy made it to me at 5.45pm. Well done Wendy, thanks to your perseverance this girl now has a chance 👏

Calls concerning injured/poorly hedgehogs are increasing as we approach one of the busiest times of year, so it's a good idea to be prepared with the numbers of your nearest rescues now.

Go to www.yorkshirehedgehogs.co.uk for details of local rescues and keep numbers handy.

We will be closed to new admissions over the weekend due to work, but will be back open on Monday.

After a manic day yesterday with 5 new admissions, it's been lovely to end today with a high.

Harriet came in 3 weeks ago, emaciated, passing blood and making distress calls 😔

She slowly started to improve after a week of intensive care and there was no stopping her after that ❤️

As she was found a short distance from the rescue, she has a new home and support feeding here in the rescue garden with access routes in and out

Good luck Harriet 🍀
