A little follow up on our portable muck heap, its great. Only down side is it only take about 2 days to fill. So yes that is 6 horses producing about 900l of muck in 2 days!!

Digging a trench yesterday as Drifter has realised that the inside track isn't electrified. Thankfully she doesn't always trash the fencing for a 16.2hh mare she is very agile. So we now have 1 buried electric cable and the inside track is now electrified.

I am totally looking forward to today, last night I travelled down to Kent for Graveney Equine: Horse Track System Livery open day sadly the 5 hour journey took 7 hours, not sure I ever need to come this far south again!!
But I can't wait to see an established track and meet other like minded people. And learning about Zoopharmacognosy sounds really interesting!!!

It’s work in progress but I am getting there ! The horses use the gravel track loads which is good to see ☺️

We have been out foraging again. This time it's the trees we have attacked. We had hoped to make some tree hay, but sadly summer is ending and I think we are nearly out of time.

Also I wanted to have a test run and check that the horses liked our offerings. I would have collected more but the wind was sooo strong , I had to re-fill the barrow a couple of times, hiking from the drive to the track!

So we collected willow (a firm favourite) birch, Ash, and silver birch. I have hornbeam to try next time and I'll try and get some stacked away to see if they like tree hay over winter or not. Bt fresh branches and leaves are definitely a hit with these guys :)

The track boys were out competing again at the weekend, this time dressage was on the agenda!

Jim kept his cool and produced two lovely tests winning the intro and coming 2nd in the prelim. Sandi is over the moon with him, proclaiming very loudly as we walked past the judges box “OMG we did it again... I stayed on!!!!”
I do wish she would have higher expectations!!! The track has been the making of Jim, who previously bucked in canter either due to excitement or suspensory issues but track life is obviously helping on both fronts.

Bertie was a star winning the Elementary and coming 3rd in the novice. He has only been barefoot since coming onto the track this spring. Its great that his feet obviously arnt missing the shoes and his flicky toes (medium trot) has developed loads this year.

Well done boys.

Food Recommendations please!

What can you recommend that what is low sugar, ethically grown & manufactured but very palitable. Dundee doesn’t need a bucket feed other than getting his Calm & Healthy Horses supplements into him.

07/08/2021

It’s not only the horses that love our sand pit, George is owned by Dundee’s owner and is here every day with her. George is a little rescue shihtzu and is getting braver each day and happier as he gets comfortable around the horses. He loves a bit of horse p**p and is either rolling in it or eating it 🙈

Yesterday baby Drifter had an es**rt round one of the fields. She is a little anxious and tends to rush to get home , however, today with the super chilled Dundee she took it all in her stride and without a tantrum !

More on getting to know the ponies in future posts!

Let’s talk about nettles ….

Nettles have an amazing nutrient profile being high in calcium, magnesium and zinc to name but a few.

Nettle is a lively plant, and a strengthening tonic to the whole body.

It can be feed to help with sweet itch, laminitis, arthritis and rheumatism.

Dundee and Tilly are the newest to the herd and have settled in nicely. Even when they are sharing the hay not so nicely - They love each other really !

We are now ready for another herd member to join the track. Contact Hannah for more information.

On our traditional livery we are trying to reduce the amount of herbicides used. So for the last couple of years instead of using w**d killers we have been cutting down thistles and Dock leaves and putting them on our muck heap.
However this year with the track, the track ponies are loving the thistles, so they get given a couple of barrow loads a week. Which they thoroughly enjoy. We don't give them the Dock leaves as they don't like them. Bt it adds variety to their diet which is really important.

Just some hoof prints

25/07/2021

All too often we hear a clatter of hooves and a glimpse of Arthur cantering or trotting down the hill. He does it without warning and I've never been able to video it yet. However this evening both he and Dundee were keen to get to their hay and we got to see some high speed on the track. Safe to say I think the gravel and the hill are winning features.

This morning one of the owners went out to collect her pony to find the herd all together on the sand pit. Not wanting to disturb them she sat with them all, for well over 30 minutes. Drifter is the baby of the group and she was the one standing and watching over them all. Eventually she choose to lay down and within 5 minutes the other three all stood at the same time.

The Timothy grass seems to be doing really well this year in this field, these pieces have been turned twice and conditioned which means they have been well beaten. However, they are still over 1m long, very woody and stalky so we will be trying one of these bales early this year to see how the horses like it. If they do enjoy it, it will help us with the decision on what to over sow the field with this Autumn, whether to use a Timothy heavy mix or whether to put other species in.

While I have been busy turning the hay each day this week , one of the MTL staff members has been making sure all the horses are well taken care of. As It's been hot hot hot she has been cold hosing all the horses down to keep them fresh and hopefully cooler. Of course the two gingers instantly rolled!
We were thinking about adding a re-freshing cooling wash solution to the water bt wernt sure what products people recommend which have a refreshing or cooling effect. Any suggestions pls :)

It’s hay bailing time and I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that the clouds that are slowing appearing will not ruin my day 😬

Back in June (last photo) there was meant to be a small cut of our headlands. Sadly there was a slight miscommunication and some of our hay field was also cut 🙈

So here we are in mid July and notice the difference in our grass where it was mistakenly cut. Not quite sure if the edges will make it into our hay this year or will end up being haylage, but when I test the hay I am expecting the greener grass to be much higher in sugar. The results this year will be very interesting.

With all the nice weather of late, we took advantage and decided for a yard beach visit. With a mix of the traditional yard horses and the track side we loaded up with slight concerns with the black sky from a storm that was about to hit Beverley! Thankfully luck was on our side and it completely missed us!!! Fraisthorpe beach stretches for miles and on this Sunday evening it was nice and quiet for a leisurely walk and a good natter for 7 miles.
