As is on a Tuesday this year, firework displays are spread across this weekend and next. We know this is a stressful time for many pet owners, so our vets have put together their top tips on helping anxious pets keep calm 🎆

Our free Firework Guide will help you make sure you've got everything covered for your pet: http://pdsa.me/pFGd

[Visual description: Infographic which has seven tips to help pets cope with fireworks. Each tip is next to a small picture related to the point. Tips include: make a den, play music and sounds, keep pets inside, pheromone plug-in, close doors, curtains and door flaps, cats feel safer up high, and if your pet seeks reassurance, comfort them normally.]

Huge congratulations to this amazing group of teen dogs and their hard-working guardians! 🤩

Training an adolescent dog is not easy, but they all put in the work with PATIENCE and UNDERSTANDING. They all did wonderfully.

Hi all,

I thought I'd spend a minute to warn you about the use of seedballs for birds, and how dangerous they can be for dogs.

Seedballs are often made with some type of fat (typically lard) to glue the seeds together. Fat is the highest calorie-dense macronutrient, so it is also great source of energy during the cold winter months.

These seedballs are obviously aimed to be fed to wild birds, however, it's not uncommon for the balls to end up on the ground in your garden, which is a huge risk to your dogs.

The high fat content of the seedballs can cause indigestion or even pancreatitis - inflammation of the pancreas - which is extremely painful, causes internal bleeding and can be fatal in dogs.

Last winter, I collected 7 loose seedballs from my garden, even though I do not feed wildlife. These had been picked up by wildlife in the neighbourhood and dropped in my garden. Just last week, my puppy picked up a seedball on our drive, and luckily she dropped it on cue.

But as some of you might know, my old girl Betty was in a really bad way with terrible gastrointestinal upset last weekend. We thought it was likely pancreatitis and that maybe she had found a rogue seedball we hadn't noticed. Luckily it wasn't pancreatitis, and she's made a full recovery.

So if you're thinking about leaving bird food out this winter, what can you do?

⚠️ Consider using other types of birds foods which do not contain fat as a binding agent.

⚠️ Use robust bird feeders to contain the seedballs securely, so that birds (and squirrels and rats) cannot pry it out of the feeder. Squirrels and rats can open containers more easily than you think.

⚠️ Do a sweep of your garden before letting your dogs out.

⚠️ Train a reliable leave-it and drop-it.

⚠️ Bring awareness of the dangers to friends, family and neighbours.

UPDATE: After 3 days of care and many trips to the vets, Betty is doing much better. We're not quite sure what the cause was, but it was a close call. 😞 She's now eating and acting much like herself again.

I'll be in touch with everyone to reschedule by tomorrow!
---

Apologies to everyone as I have had to cancel today's classes.

Old girl Betty is really poorly and I've had to take her to the out-of-hours vets. She's not yet better, but I'm keeping fingers crossed that the meds kick in and provide some relief 🤞

I'll get in touch asap to reschedule all missed lessons.

It is a loose-leash walking practice weekend! 👣🐕

The puppies on the Ingenious Puppy Class started learning about loose-leash walking and dealing with distractions on leash.

And the teens on the Loose-leash Walking Class had their first session training the concept of a heel position and reward zone. 😊

And then last night I got home and practised loose-leash walking with my own pup. I got A LOT of steps in these past 2 days 😆

Photo 2: A spaniel is standing on a taller platform covered with a non-slip bathmat while in a tidy heel position next to his handler.

Little Rosie has been joining me on regular training walks, and she's doing so well building her confidence!

We have been unlucky with the weather though, so we took a trip to a pet shop to explore, sniff around, and observe people doing their shopping. She loved it!

The links between medical conditions and behaviour change are increasingly recognised.

Whilst I have noticed a substantial increase in awareness of how pain can influence behaviour, other medical contributions to behaviour change are still not as regularly considered.

This article is a really useful summary as a starting point.

Are your dog's walks a struggle? 😬

No judgment here! Training a dog to walk nicely on the leash takes time and dedication, and there are many layers of skill needed to get there.

You might have read lots of conflicting advice online and wanted professional help, but booking a package of private sessions can be costly, especially when it is a skill that takes consistency to master. This is why I've designed the Loose-leash Walking Class!

The class will help you learn why your dog pulls in the first place (it's not as simple as your dog just wanting to get somewhere!), and teach you all the elements of a loose-leash walk before putting it into action.

➡️ Come join me for a fun & practical class, and learn how to design your dog's walk for better success by practising in a realistic outdoor setting. This means wellies, raincoats and a sunny disposition are a must as we'll be treading through the fields! 😉

🐶 You can book the LLW class here: https://www.ingeniousdogs.co.uk/courses/llw-october

(Please note, if you already know that your dog's pulling is due to anxiety or reactivity and this hasn't been addressed, then please get in touch to assess your dog's suitability.)

Bloat is a dangerous condition, and its symptoms should be taken seriously and considered an emergency!
04/10/2024

Bloat is a dangerous condition, and its symptoms should be taken seriously and considered an emergency!

You wouldn’t know this was not even four hours after emergency surgery 😱

Charlie presented to us with bloat but turned into a gastric dilation volvus - where the stomach fills with gas, flips and twists. It’s a life threatening emergency 🚨

He was quickly stabilised & rushed into theatre, where the team were able to put his stomach back in the right place & keep it there. He stayed with us for another 24hrs, he was then discharged 🥳

We’re still not entirely sure what exactly causes bloat in dogs but it is thought that eating large amounts of food before or after exercise may be a contributing factor 🍔 We do know that large breeds of dog, or deep chested breeds (such as Irish Setters, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Dobermanns etc) are more prone to bloat or a GDV.

Ways to reduce the chances of bloat include:

- Waiting at least 1hr before or after feeding before exercise
- Consider using a slow feeder to slow down the rate they eat their food
- Feed smaller meals a few times a day (eg rather than 1 large meal, 2-3 smaller meals)

We’ve previously listed the signs of bloat but as a refresher they include: wretching or trying to vomit but not producing anything, distended hard abdomen that’s getting bigger quickly, a panicked expression on their face, staggering around & becoming progressively more unsettled 🚨

Tinkapup joined the puppies on our Structured Socialisation Course with Leads In Action for an excursion to the garden centre 🤩

All the pups did better than her! Typical 😆

This is why early socialisation and training are so important, as adolescence is hard and is often accompanied by a regression 😊

Despite it, she still had fun!

Puppy play group this past Saturday, off-leash pups exploring, interacting and learning to re-focus on their handlers, before finishing the session with a settle 😊

It was lovely, especially in the sun! No pics of the pup interactions, as that requires all eyes watching and hands at the ready 😄

The next Puppy Play Group is with and myself on Saturdays at 1pm in East Hull, for pups up to 20 weeks old.

🙄 You know when you have a dog with a chronic issue and you are worried about them getting an acute injury on top of that?

I have a great tip to prevent this from happening

The easiest way to prevent accidents in the home is for ALL slippery floors (even if you don't think they are that slippery) to have non slip rugs on them. They should be wide enough for your dog to be able to turn around and all paws remain on the rug. Even if your dog looks like they are fine on them, the chances are they are not, they may be tentative in how they move, which leads to them feeling unsafe and holding themselves in a tense manner.

Try it and see the difference it makes! My clients who have put this tip into action have noticed the big difference this one simple change. 🙌

Want to learn more about how I can help you? Send me a WhatsApp and I'll get back to you ASAP. 💕
