It is hot again, isn't it! 🥵 A gentle reminder for all that frozen food enrichment should NOT be frustrating to your dogs 😉 as I'm seeing posts and videos circulating again that show dogs with fully stuffed frozen kongs or even a bowl's worth of solid ice! Here are some tips on how to achieve this ⬇️

Happy 16th birthday to Betty 🥳

I always find it hard to put into words what Betty means to me. You're my greatest friend and a constant comfort ❤️ You're such a wonderful dog of the world.

Thank you for tolerating all the life changes I've thrown at you. Thank you for quietly liking the crazy puppy. Thank you for loving the lazy days, yet always being up for an adventure.

I'm hoping I can find more time this year to have fun training together and visiting cafés, where you can manipulate other guests into sharing cream scones with you 😆 One of Betty's many talents.

Huge thanks to Gemma Coates, animal physiotherapist, and and Peel Veterinary Clinic for helping her keep her comfortable and able to enjoy life to the fullest, as she always has 😁

🐶 Puppy Biting and Mouthing Checklist ☑️

Puppies are going to bite and mouth; it's part of how they explore the world! Even then, we realize that it's not an enjoyable experience. Those teeth are sharp!

How do we address it?

☑️ Have all of their needs been met? Food, water, potty, and exercise
☑️ Have they been getting enough sleep, or have they been awake for too long? Puppies need up to 18-20 hours of sleep per day.
☑️ What appropriate chewing items are readily available to them? They should have access to chews, enrichment items, and toys of different textures and types
☑️ Are they being handled too much? Sometimes we unintentionally frustrate puppies by constantly touching them, restraining them, picking them up, and interrupting them without redirecting them, which can lead to an increase in mouthiness.

Redirecting puppies to appropriate chews, toys, or other activities is the best way to combat mouthiness. If the biting continues after attempts to redirect, return to the checklist!

While most puppy biting and mouthing is to be expected, there are times when it escalates past the point of what is "normal". Do not hesitate to reach out to us if it feels extreme or atypical. We can help, whether you're local to us or not! 💙

Happy birthday to the International Canine Behaviourists 🥳

During a behaviour consultation, your behaviourist will ask you many many questions with the aim to untangle all the factors which influence your dog's behaviour.

Socialisation, training and a guardian's awareness of body language can prevent a whole host of behaviour problems from developing, even if a dog should experience something negative. Behaviour problems are frequently the result of a multiple compounding factors.

This means that improvement can sometimes be achieved quickly by changing simple things about your dog's lifestyle and routines. Other times, a whole lot of health investigations and re-training are necessary to resolve an issue.

Today we have a great infographic from Marie at Ingenious Dogs.

Three more puppies have graduated from the Ingenious Puppy Class. Huge congratulations to them! 😍

I am always finding it difficult to recap everything that puppies achieved in a puppy class, because there is just so much! Beside learning all sorts of life skills like walking on a leash and recall and plenty more in their formal training lessons, these pups have fully enjoyed the wonderful summer weather to explore and play outdoors. ☀️ The topics we explored in our outdoor socialisations revolved around reading dog's body language all while investigating water, socialisation to unusual outfits (high-vis jackets, umbrellas, etc.), greeting people calmly, interacting with dogs when there's a size difference, recalling away from other dogs and lots and lots of learning to relax and switch off in the presence of other dogs and people.

I have no doubt that these pups will grow up to be curious, fun-loving and skilled dogs under the knowledgeable and loving care of their respective families. I am looking forward to hearing about their future successes and adventures. 🥰

Thank you for joining me on the class, I wish you all the best continuation!

Photo 2: A Border terrier puppy in a bright orange harness is sitting calmly in front of her female-presenting guardian, who is smiling widely at the camera and also holding a certificate and rosette.
Photo 3: A tiny red cavapoo puppy in a black harness is sitting on a grey mat next to her certificate and rosette. She is looking straight at the camera, and her ears are slightly pinned and her tail is pointing up in anticipation of interacting with the camera person.
Photo 4: A snapshot shows the golden retriever puppy walking on a loose leash next to her person. She is looking up in excitement, communicated by an open mouth, wide, open ears and a tail that is wagging high.
Photo 5: The golden retriever puppy is investigating orange plastic bowls floating in a blue kiddy pool, which also has squares of artificial grass going through the middle.
Photo 6: The cavapoo puppy is interacting with a shallow rubber purple bowl filled with water and other floating toys in a field. Her handler is squatting next to her and is placing treats in an orange toy while smiling. The Border terrier puppy is sniffing in snufflemats inside a colourful fabric tunnel in the background. Her person is standing next to the tunnel.
Photo 7: The Border terrier is leaping at the cavapoo playfully, who is dashing past her. The golden retriever puppy is laid relaxed in the grass next to them and is watching.
Photo 8: The cavapoo puppy is practising laying down on her grey mat in front of her person, who is placing a treat in front of the puppy's paws. Toys and a snufflemat are around them.
Photo 9: A male-presenting person is sitting cross-legged on the ground and is luring the golden retriever puppy's nose up with a treat in their hand.
Photo 10: The Border terrier puppy is laid in the grass in front of her female-presenting handler, who is looking down at her while wearing a cycling helmet. Flower pots are in the grass next to them.

HOT WEATHER & AN INCREASE IN BITE RISK 🥵

We've had some very hot weather recently in the UK, and for many parts of the UK- the next three days are going to be scorchio!

It's important to be aware that being too hot can lower thresholds for tolerance and overt reactions- and not just in 'reactive' dogs.

And not just in dogs!

There's a correlation between human riots and an increase in crime during a significant rise in temperature (27 to 32 degrees).
It is well established that in people, heat stress causes irritability and an increased likelihood of aggressive behaviour.

Being hot and bothered is a physical stressor - the body works hard to return to homeostasis.

Cognitive processes can be negatively affected. So if your dog is not responding to as they would normally, consider the effects of heat.

Furthermore- being too hot can interfere with a dog's ability to rest and sleep. During rest and sleep, stress is lowered, and subsequently compromised rest and sleep affects behaviour.

This can affect (lower) the dog's threshold for emotional stress.

🐕 Two unfamiliar dogs meeting while both are hot and bothered is less likely going to result in a healthy interaction. Now is the time to largely keep yourselves to yourselves on walks, or monitor the body language of both dogs very carefully.

🏡 Extra caution should be taken in situations that your dog may struggle with, such as around visitors to the home.

🧒 But the greatest caution of all should be taken around up-close interactions in ALL dogs, especially those who live children.

Remember these basic safeguarding rules;

1. No faces near faces.

2. Let sleeping dogs lie.

3. Do not forcefully take resources (toys, food or anything the dog has found/picked up) off a dog.
Children should never take things off a dog.

4. Do not 'box dogs in' with your interaction.

- Always ensure they can easily move away by not blocking a dog's ability to move forward/away (for example, wrapping your arms around to hug a dog front on makes it near impossible for them to easily disengage).

- The safest way to interact is to invite a dog to come to you.
Alternatively, if you do approach then do so when they are awake and instead of swooping straight in with strokes- wait for them to signal to you they are keen for an interaction.

- Stop stroking after 2-3 seconds, and see if your dog communicates to you they would like more, or if they are done.
This is called the consent test, and it's something all children (and adults) should be aware of.

Most people who get bitten by a dog know the dog well, didn't think their dog would ever bite someone and didn't see the bite coming.

Most dog bites are on faces and hands of someone close to the dog, and this tells us a lot about what the person was LIKELY doing (Note, there are always exceptions).

As I always say to my clients ......

🗣️ Never take your dog's current level of tolerance for granted.
