We had a super productive lesson last week on our Teenage Progression Course 😍
We chatted about understanding the unique interests of individual dogs and tailoring enrichment to improve teen dogs' mental wellbeing.
We then practised focus around doors & thresholds to reduce arousal and frustration, as well as calmly greeting people!
Not sure how Leads In Action and I managed to cram it into a single session, but it was great fun and the dogs and guardians aced the exercises by applying the foundations from week 1 😁
Video description: A tall man goes to open a door, and his small border terrier rushes to look out the door gap. Text reads: "Teen Progression Course: Door safety training in progress", then another clip plays where the same person is reaching to open the door, and the border terrier is sitting attentively and focused, and looks at both his guardians as the door opens slightly. They reward him by tossing a treat. Tect reads "Going back to basics pays off", then a final clip shows a woman and her large mixed breed dog standing by another door. The woman's hand is on the door handle, and her dog is standing next to her and being attentive, and she rewards her dog with a treat. The woman turns around and smiles at the camera. Text reads: "No frustration, just lots of fun. Nourishing the wonderful bond between guardian and their young dog by engaging in activities that matter to both." Fun music is playing throughout the video.
Can you believe this is only week 1 of the Teenage Progression Class with Leads In Action ? 😲
Great things are in store for this group 😍
Just a normal evening... sitting on the kitchen floor... dremeling pasta 😄
Video description: A woman is sat crosslegged on the floor. In front of her are two dogs, a setter puppy and a fox-lookalike mutt on a blanket. The woman is using a dremel to grind down pasta, then stopping promptly to give each dog a kibble. She repeats this a few times.
You've got until midnight tomorrow (evening of July 31st) to submit a video of your smiling leash walks! 😊
A smiling leash walk is...
- a walk on a longer leash (at least 2 meters, but ideally 5 meters!)
- a walk with a non-restrictive harness
- a walk where the dog is setting a natural slow pace
- a walk where the dog is sniffing and exploring at leisure
Don't forget to tag me "@ Ingenious Dogs" for a chance to win a snufflemat and tug toy 😍
Video description:
A ten-second clip shows a Gordon setter puppy on a teal harness and long line walking ahead of the camera on a dirt path in the shade. There is greenery on the side of the path. The puppy is walking calmly and the leash is loose. The puppy then stops and looks back at the person holding the camera. The puppy is panting, suggesting it is warm. A feminine voice says "Good girl!".
A 15-second clip shows an older white collie cross walking in the sun on the sidewalk. He is walking slowly and calmly on a relaxed long-line ahead of the camera.
A last 30-second clip shows the Gordon setter puppy again, but this time walking on the sidewalk as well. The puppy is sniffing a small hedge in front of a garden, and the person with the camera is following the puppy as they're exploring to keep the long-line loose. The puppy then carries on walking, and crosses in front of the camera to sniff a grass verge. The handler's hand holding the loops of the teal long-line comes into view of the camera, as the puppy stops to sniff. The handler stops as well, and the puppy looks down the road with interest.

Ingenious Puppy Class shenanigans 🥰
This past weekend, the puppies practised some confidence building exercises while their guardians learned to decipher their body language. We played as well - of course - and practised a little bit of focus and response to their name around distractions!
It was really fun. Thank you Sally from Leads In Action for hanging around to film 😁
Video description: Happy panio music is playing. A little black puppy in a harness walks towards her guardian and an Ikea bag on the floor. She confidently steps into the bag and snuffles around for treats. When she is done, she walks over to her guardian to reconnect and her tail wags. A little brown staffie follows his guardian's hand as she throws a treat to the left. He pounces after it, and then promptly returns to his guardian and receives another treat. A golden retriever is stood in the Ikea bag and is snuffling around. A little poodle cross also pounces after a treat that her guardian has throwm. Her leash is trailing on the floor. She eats the treat, looks up at the golden retriever in the background who is also practising mini recalls, and then turns around to her guardian.

Little bit of free search scentwork with Djuke in the garden today 🥰 Djuke is more of a nervous dog, but he is so brave and determined when doing scentwork.
He picked up the scent at 0:45, but followed it downwind! And it took him so long to hone in on the source, he nearly gave up. But he got it in the end 💪
Please excuse the state of the garden, we're in between projects!
Video description: A white and light brown collie cross is running around an overgrown garden. He picks up on some scent as he is walking along the fence, and follows it down the garden. He loops back around, and picks up on the scent again when coming around the laundry racks. He takes some time sniffing half a meter down from where a red Kong is wedged in the fence, before turning back towards the woman holding the camera. As he does, he immediately sticks his nose in the air again and follows the scent back to the Kong. He freezes with his nose on the red Kong, and the woman says "yes" and feeds him a treat. She then cues "Search" twice, and he immediately goes to indicate on the Kong again.
We've been having lots of fun at the Scentsational Sniffers Introductory Class.
The teams have completed their active searches, and have now moved on to working on passive searches. They've been absolutely fabulous. Have a look at the different active searches they've been doing! 😁
Video description: A black spaniel in a purple harness is searching next to her handler. There are lots of different items on the ground. She climbs over a red foam cube, then begins to sniff around an upturned cardboard box. She sniffs along the edges going back and forth, before finding a piece of cheese that was hidden behind it. The video pans to a second dog, a red cockerpoo who is being tasked by his handler to search among a few boxes and a couple of toys. He finds something at the bottom of a cardboard box. The video pans to a black labradoodle who is sniffing along a chair in front of a table. He is very focused as he's sniffing the edges of the chair. He walks around it and then finds a piece of cheese on the stretcher of the chair. His tail wags and he looks up at his handler who is holding his leash. The video pans to a different black spaniel in a yellow harness who is climbing into a shallow cardboard box with a carpet bottom. She sticks her head behind the edge of the box, between two other boxes, and pulls out a lime green lotus ball. She places the ball in the box she is standing in, and uses her nose and paws to pull it open and eat the treat hidden within it. Funky rock music is playing throughout.
Last week, I had taken Betty out for a walk & coffee with Amazing Grace Dog Training. Before we met up, we were lazily walking along in the park, but Betty suddenly froze.
Her ears perked up, she stuck her nose high into the air and spent 15 seconds airscenting. Her nose was twitching, her eyes half closed in the sun and her ears scanning around her.
She then started walking again, faster and with urgency. I followed her jogging, as she was trotting ahead of me and leading the way.
She eventually stopped at the curb to a road, and seemingly lost interest when I told her to wait before crossing.
It turned out she had picked up our friend's scent, and led me right across the road from where she had parked her car! Betty didn't know we were meeting up with Jem, but her nose betrayed the surprise. Aren't dogs and their sense of smell amazing? 😁
Video description: A fawn coloured small sized dog on a purple harness is walking rapidly along a path in a field. She then take a sharp turn right into the grass, and slowly curves back to the left, before stopping at the curb of a road. A car can be heard driving past, and a female voice says "wait". The dog's ears are perked up and she takes a step sideways before stopping and looking back at the handler.
The last week of the introductory scentwork class was all about progressing indications, and working on passive searches! 😁
This sprocker did a brilliant job of improving the precision of her indications when she found the odour. 😊
Video description:
A brown sprocker is sniffing a thick rubber mat full of holes (a hard standing mat for muddy ground) while sweeping her nose from left to right. Her tail is wagging furiously. Her nose stops over a piece of red rubber in one of the holes in the mat, and she lays down with her nose pointing at the red rubber piece. Her handler who is standing next to the mat, immediately feeds a treat to her dog right next to the hidden red piece of rubber.

It was the last week of puppy class, and the pups and their guardians showcased the super progress they have made in the past 6-7 weeks 😍
Staying focused on your handler while there's other giddy puppies running around the room is not easy, but this lot certainly made it look like it is!
Video description: A small and furry labradoodle puppy is standing in front of her guardian, who throws a treat to the side. The puppy rushes to eat the treat, then comes back when called and sits patiently in front of her handler while waiting for her well-earned treat.
The camera pans to the left, and shows a larger black collie cross puppy doing just the same. He sits very neatly in front of his handler after being called.
The camera pans 180°, showing a slender labradoodle puppy in a lime green harness being fed a treat. The handler throws another treat to the side, and the puppy bounces and pounces on it, before looking up (at another puppy out of shot). His handler calls him, and he excitedly walks back towards her.
The camera pans to the left again, showing a golden retriever puppy walking up to his guardian and sitting, before being fed a treat. She then throws another treat into the middle of the room, and he chases after it. He immediately turns around after eating his treat, and goes to sit calmly in front of his guardian, who rewards him for coming back.

Thank you to all my amazing clients and friends who handed me cards, chocolates and treats for the doggies. They are very much appreciated (and delicious!) 😍

Lots of love from me! 🥰
Image Description: A photograph shows a fox-looking mixed sandy coloured mixed breed standing on a large snow ball in a snow field. She looks to the left with a happy and amused facial expression. There are lots of white stars added to the photo, some of which twinkle. Text in red and green at the bottom reads "Merry Christmas to you, your family and pups"
Third scentwork session for this dream team, who have been acing their homework and it showed 😍
This gorgeous collie shows clear understanding of the search cue and his body language lets us know he's in odour. In the New Year, we'll start working on indications 😍
Video description:
A black and white border collie is standing facing the camera in a fenced in sensory dog garden. A woman in a large black winter coat motions with her hand to task the dog to search the area behind him. The border collie turns around, and starts sniffing up and down the corner of the wooden fence. He then nudges the small red kong that is attached to a metal ring on the fence. The handler cheers, the dog looks up walks towards her and is given a treat.
