15 week old black lab X French bulldog Willow playing a game of controlled tug with her dad. Tug is a great energy burner and can also be used to teach puppies to "drop" and develop the important skill of self control ๐คฉ
Gorgeous 6mo cockapoo Ozzy and her owner doing some desensitising to the harness training. Ozzy has tried a few harnesses and has not been keen. We chose this one because it unclips in 3 places so doesn't involve getting her to put her head or legs through any parts. Keep up the great work team Ozzy ๐
Building a more positive association with the brush and grooming for this little pup who hasn't been too keen ๐
Hannah and Ozzy working on their speedy "sit" this week ๐
9mo Border Collie Ernie and his dad learning loose-lead walking and doing a grand job. This is dog # 13 and the first time needing help with this skill, which goes to show every dog is an individual ๐
Using co-operative care to cover up Gracie's foot injury, before taking her wheels for a spin earlier ๐ Super chilled and in control ๐ ๐ถ๐
5 mo mini JRT Molly practising keeping all 4 paws on the floor when treats are being delivered - no mean feat when you are half kangaroo ๐๐
Fen is acing his recall training ๐ฅ
4-year-old Cavvy Simba is acing his Friday afternoon self-control food bowl challenge ๐. Simbaโs owner is working on reinforcing calmness and building frustration-tolerance to help reduce his jumping and barking around food, toys and outings. The aim of the exercise is to be able to place the food bowl on the floor without Simba moving towards it. We are setting him up for success by placing a single piece of kibble in the bowl and taking baby steps towards placing it on the floor. When he moves forward, the bowl moves away. Watch how quickly he readopts a stationary position in order to restart the game. Self-control is such an important life skill which you can start teaching in early puppyhood and practise throughout your dogโs life. Great work Tony and Simba! ๐คฉ
Putting on a harness can be tricky when your dog is constantly trying to bite at it, but getting ready for a walk doesnโt have to be stressful. Here, we are using a hand target to teach Fen to love putting his head into his harness. This video is Fenโs second 1-min training session on this. In just a few minutes more, he was calmly sitting while the buckles were done up so he was all ready to go. Smart boy, Fen! ๐ถ๐
5-month old golden doodle Holly is coming on leaps and bounds with her training. No leaping or bounding in this video though! That's because we are working on teaching Holly to keep 4 paws on the floor for greetings. Trying to teach a puppy not to jump up when a real visitor comes to the house is incredibly challenging โ for them and for you. This is where baby gates and leads come in useful. Meanwhile, you can teach your puppy more appropriate greeting behaviour in training sessions like this one :)
Happy Monday everyone! Love this short clip of shepherd mix Fen mastering his new Kong Wobbler ๐คฉ. Fen is 10 months old, which means the growth plates between his bones havenโt yet closed, making them soft and vulnerable to injury, with implications now and later in life. This means, as dog owners, we need to find ways to tire our energetic pups and young dogs mentally, as well as providing age-appropriate physical exercise. Feeding meals inside food toys like Kongs is a great way to do this, along with games such as hide and seek, finding toys and other hidden treasure, controlled tug, and positive reinforcement training ๐.
