One of my lovely liveries is trying to water our freshly planted trees. The boys are "helping" bt emptying the bucket before she can get to the trees. Poor lady had to fill the bucket 3 times to get water to the trees. Obviously deliveroo water is better than walking to the trough.

We knew Wispa would settle in well to track life when in quarantine she was enjoying browsing the hedges. She is our first youngster on the track and has taken to it really well.

Show Jumping was also on the same day, the arena was on a big down hill slope and time and fences were causing lots of penalties. We knew we had to go steady to make all the turns on all 4 feet. Bertie was as high as a kite. We got a lovely clear but with time penalties and no slips. Winner winner. Amazing bt if I go again we need to jump barefoot on an uneven sloping arena which is hard in our flat part of Yorkshire. Then it was time to hand graze and generally mooch around the show as cross country was on day 2. The course was amazing rolling hills but most of the fences were on flat bits of ground so the risk of us slipping was much reduced. Anyway Bertie flew round. There were a few tricky fences which took some riding and were causing some issues but Bertie didn't even look. He knows his job, he looks for flags and he does his best to jump between them. He was mega. Our only plan for next year is to work out what is causing his out burst of energy..... Is it being stabled.... He was never this high being stabled before track life... Is it that now he eats better so gets more energy from his food? Is it that his gut is doing better so again he gets more energy from his food? Or is it just both his and my excitement and nerves showing through..... Jen at Equinutrition I feel a conversation brewing. Lol.
So all in all despite the long drive times we had a great weekend.

Last weekend myself Bertie and the rest of my team from went to for the British Riding Clubs Horse Trials Championships. A huge thanks to white rose for sending us and helping financially you are an amazing club who we have been a part of for many years.
This trip was 5.5 hours away, a 2 day stay over and by far the BIGGEST event me and Bertie have ever been to. There was just under 1000 competitors over the 3 days. The venue was lovely. Set in huge rolling hills there wasn't a flat piece of land anywhere. Which as you can imagine was interesting for me and Bertie competing bare foot. See pics of stables there were rows and rows of stables and a look down on the cross country course. Our dressage was ok. Although Bertie was tense and excited to go into the ring. Bt calmed for the end of our test. With marks ranging from 6-8 so we got an average result. 34.7% amazingly there were 2 19% given and quite a few low 20s so I guess it's another winter of dressage Bertie!!!!

A video about the boots that we use on the track. If people would like to know more then pls ask any questions. I'll either answer in the comments or do another video.
Currently we use and Scoot Boot I also recommend Gem Thompson Equine Podiatry Student to come and fit boots for new liveries as she has a good selection of fit kits and knows what she is doing. I'd just be guessing. Our none ridden horses and some lightly ridden horses cope fine without boots. Bt many of our ridden horses need boots as their feet are under much more stress.

Whilst scrolling through Facebook today, I saw a post from someone wanting to share their horse's progress. Said post was a before and after of a woman's horse after a period of time on her track system, where the horse had clearly lost weight and was making great progress towards becoming a healthier and happier horse overall.

In the comment section of said post, another woman expressed her concern about the horse being too thin, my reminder that the equine world has grown so used to seeing fat horses as healthy and in turn, turning to what's familiar in the face of uncertainty. I wanted to take a moment to talk about this, and in particular, the process that many horses go through that often results in owner's second guessing themselves.

Traditionally, we keep horses in small paddocks of grass, sometimes with friends and sometimes without. The use of a stable can be involved overnight, or depending on the horse's or owner's circumstances, through the day too. Whilst this is common, it is a practice of inappropriate care for the equine species and often creates its own abundance of physical or physiological issues.

When we use alternative methods of horse management such as a paddock paradise track system, our horses are encouraged to move on a daily basis to fulfil their basic needs. Coupled with species appropriate adlib hay as their main source of forage, we can expect to see some changes in our horses. Depending on the issues that they first presented with, this can mean weight loss or weight gain.

When a horse with EMS or obesity begins to lose weight on track, it can be rather shocking and sometimes upsetting for the owner or bystanders. I personally believe this is thanks to a combination of the normalisation of overweight, unhealthy horses and a lack of understanding between obesity and muscle.

Over at PB Paddock Paradise Livery, we specialise in the rehabilitation and management of horses with Laminitis and EMS. During the rehabilitation process, we always expect to be presented with a skinny horse when the excess weight or fat pads melt away. Whilst sometimes distressing to see, this 'skinny' horse is considerably healthier than the overweight horse and is only deemed skinny due to lack of muscle, something terribly common in domestic horses. Said horses then go through a process of developing muscle through a correct diet and increased movement, which takes time to build.

However, when we fail to recognise that said skinny horse is the horse that was underneath the fat pads or extra weight, many owners resort to past, familiar methods such as grazing. Whilst allowing their horse to graze on grass again may appear to add weight or muscle rapidly, the reality is that fast weight gain is often unhealthy in itself. If your horse is metabolic or reacts to grass in other ways, be it behavioural or physical, then we begin trying to 'fix' one problem by creating another.

So, here's your reminder that the road to better equine health may not look how you expect.

It's great that it's finally summer in East Yorkshire. Ben Machin was able to come and trim our horses wearing his Xmas prezzie, his Meaux vest top. It did seem a bit strange giving him a vest top at Christmas.
Bt now the sun is shining hopefully he can make good use of it. If you see Ben or Chris Adamson in their Meaux tops feel free to tag Meaux Track Livery - MTL in any photos. It would be great to see where they get to around the county.

This little headline, breaking news note made me stop and think today.... Why did it need to be a negative statement? Could it have been written to make the statement more positive?

Do we all need a little bit more positivity in our lives. This is something I'm definitely thinking a lot more about recently. I'll be honest I don't watch the news regularly any more as I find it quite negative. I am also trying to be less involved on social media as I find it is a negative place quite often. I realise that as I'm writing this, it also sounds very negative and like I'm chronically depressed. πŸ˜‚ However this realisation has made me look at life a little differently.

Now when I compete, and achieve things in my day to day life, instead of immediately thinking I could have been better or I should have had a higher aim. I think, I've done well at achieving that, or hitting that goal. These are my aims, it's my journey and every little stop along the way needs celebrating. We all need to get better at celebrating our wins and achievements in life. We don't need to feel guilty or leave that negative bit on the end "there were only 2 in my class or it was only 80cm". Leave the last little bit off, it doesn't need saying.
Enjoy the celebration and the positivity of life, and celebrate all your wins not matter how big or small they are. All achievements should be celebrated.

Comment below with any of your recent big or little wins at life 😊 so we can celebrate with you.

Another what do my horses get fed post.

This time it's Arthur.
He gets fed once a day. He is a very good door. This feed can be adjusted if he is gaining too much weight or loosing too much weight. I love adjustable feeds to maintain optimal weight.

So while Bertie has been on small paddock rest he is getting through a 15kg Haynet every 2 days along with grass. So if given a choice would horses choose just to eat grass?

A mini experiment with Bertie.
Will horses choose grass over hay when they get a choice? Or do they like a mix of both?

Bertie is on "box rest" having tweaked his hock hopefully it will only be a week of rest then he can have a week of walking, then back to work.. Being on the track means he can still be with his friends and the track horses will have more feed placed near him to encourage them to stay close and keep him company.
We can box rest in the middle of our track and in our quarantine areas making the sizes bigger or smaller depending on what the vets advise.
So these guys never need to be stabled.

Introducing Drifter.
Well I think most of you know her quite well already. Bt she was born here at Meaux she is my last homebred horse. Her mum was meant to be a high level eventer but got injured early and her dad is John Whitakers Peppermill. She has always been opinionated she has always been very bold at less than 24 hours old she realised that all these people were here to see her!!! And she loved it!!! She was 4 during COVID so breaking her was stilted, then I set up track livery and got VERY busy and now at 8 we are finally getting there with her. She has been a very tricky horse to understand under saddle and despite having had her for life it's taken us a while to get and understand each other.
She loves track life. She would never have coped in a stable, she would have developed stable vices, almost definitely ulcers and I could imagine her being one of those aggressive mares on tiktoc. She grew up in a 40 acre field with a small herd for 3 years before coming back home for education. Track life has definitely been the making of this horse and I definitely think I'd have had to sell her for being unmanageable if she had to live a traditional life. So thank god I found track when I did. Thanks Samantha Linge Frith
So despite Drifter having always lived in a herd and with others she is always tricky to mix. She is a very ear pinny mare and pulls wonderful faces. However it's been great to see her behaviour mellow and see how she reacts differently to all the different horses. This is why we do indervidual and observed slow intros. To help the new horses and our current herd.

One of my liveries was trimming their willow tree so the gelding track benefitted with some lovely Willow branches. She had hidden them in the boxes and what was lovely was that when I put evening hay nets out they hadn't quite been round all the boxes so still had more bits to find.

So one of my liveries has been saying that I should do a post on our breathing horses (that's what I call them) so we have a few horses with breathing issues. You might remember I did some posts about our highland Hector and Arthur helping with his nebulizer. I've been holding off posting as although we have had high pollen days, we haven't had too much heat and dry land in East Yorkshire. Bt finally summer has arrived this week and I'm very excited to say that so far..... Touching wood madly. Hectors breathing is still fine and he is still off his nebulizer. Last year when we were feeding purely dry hay he ended up being on quite a high dose of steroids. This year due to last year's wet summer we produced all our Meaux Hay as wrapped hay. But still buy in our lovely meadow hay. We have reduced the amount of meadow hay we feed in summer and this seems to be working. So if you have horses with breathing issues id definitely recommend procuring some wrapped hay. 🀞 We can ditch the nebulizer. Bt realistically I'm not holding my breath as summer has only just started.

A post on what my personal horses get fed.
On our track we recommend that all horses have some form of balancer fed at the correct amount for the ideal weight of the horse. We provide the grass nuts or chop needed for any powders and if a small amount of grass nuts or micro used linseed is needed for weight or increased protein we will include that. We leave the balancer or powder choice up to liveries as everyone has a personal favorite which works best for their horses and their workload.

So this is Berties feed. All livery horses get fed once a day. But due to Berties workload he gets fed twice a day and they are large feeds. Bt he gets fenced off and he isn't a quick eater so this bucket can take him nearly hour to get through.
To get Bertie diet ideal for him I got in touch with Jen at Equinutrition. I had been struggling with what to feed Bertie for years as he is very fussy and Jen worked with our current feed and gave us some weeks which is really working for him now.

Flies on the track....
We don't get a huge amount. We often use fly spray or some horses have fly masks which we love repeatedly putting back on the horses. Bt when I tried one on Bertie he refused to move!! He is a sensitive sole!! So we use a fly fringe with him. It move enough to keep the flies away and allows him to see enough that he doesn't panic. We have tied it together with a thin bit of bailer band so it will break in an emergency. Bt as u can see Bertie can re-arrange it at will. It seems to be doing the trick.

Wow super super proud of this mare. We went to our first BD area Championship show and went a won the Intro section. With brilliant scores of 70% and 69%. So Drifter my last homebred horse and is 8 years old and we can't canter on demand yet. So prelim isn't an option at the moment, it's the aim for the end of summer. She has taken about 4 years to get to this stage. All my liveries know the big ups and downs we have had they have all been there to support me and offer advice. But it truly shows if you spend the time and have patience you can eventually get the horse of your dreams.
Well done Drifter you were so cool and calm and took it all in your stride it's about her 6th show so it's all still very new to her.

So yay us!!!

Thanks for our massage the day before I'm sure it helped with her suppleness and rhythm.

Sorry for the bad video quality. I was coming home in the lorry and found the boys mid play. So stopped to watch once I realised Jack was playing.
A key moment when introducing new horses is seeing them play and the biggest is seeing them lay down together. Those moments are amazing it means a horse and the herd have really settled together.

14/06/2024

I was going to do a post on the term "adlib hay," so I started to look up the definition. Which is
"as much and as often as desired".
This made me realize that people are using this term in the correct way. So do we need to change the term, or words used rather than the definition?
Is adlib the correct term to use when describing how much hay should be fed to horses?
The term we at MTL will now be using is "constant access" as I feel this is a better suited term. I shall explain why....

Although we feed low calorie, low sugar, low protein, clean but low nutritional value hay, I still need to make sure our track horses aren't eating too much especially those with weight issues. To help with this I use nets of different sizes holes, and monitor the horses weight visually by "body condition scoring" (BCS). Our horses are never left without hay. However referring back to my initial definition this is not adlib feeding of hay as we are limiting it, but giving constant access.
Is this where horse owners are going wrong? Is this why we are seeing a lot of morbidly obese horses because the wrong term has been used? When I use the term adlib, I take it to mean that my horses have constant access to forage. Not that the horses can eat as much as they want. So from this day forth please can anyone who hears or reads that I've used the term "adlib" correct me as I believe this is NOT the correct term to use when feeding and offering horses forage. The slightly longer term that I will be using is constant access.

Feel free to share and pls discuss. Keep all discussions polite bt id like to hear other people's opinions.

Photos below of some of our constant access hay options. As you can see they are definitely not adlib options.

Thanks Hannah

Hector is our lovely Highland pony. Bt wow he is a unit. His owner gets an independent nutritionist Nikki Meggison BSc Hons - Independent Equine Nutritionist to check his diet and weight him every 3 months as safe weight loss is definitely a team effort. At his first weigh-in Hector had lost a good amount of weight about 20kgs However at his 2nd weigh-in despite his girth going up a few extra holes he had only lost 5kg. It was safe to say that both myself and his owner were quite deflated. We could visually see that he was smaller but the scales were saying differently. Nikki did drop him by 0.5 of a body condition score so she could obviously see what we had been noticing.
I've been wanting to do a before and after photo but due to Hector's amazing winter coat he has just been a ball of fluff. I can't wait for him to loose his coat fully and we can see what is truly under there. So I cheated a little and picked a damp day where his winter coat was sitting flatter and this is the difference. Wow!!! Nikki is due in a few weeks so hopefully we can put a figure to these pictures. But I think the scales will definitely be telling us a smaller number this time when she visits.
