I've recently been re-evaluating my horses diets with Jen from Equinutrition and she asked for some updated pics. So the light chestnut (July 22) are the first pics I sent her. Dark chestnut are the ones sent last week of Bertie. Now over the last few years his competition results have improved... But I think ull all agree his body might have changed slightly to make that happen too. Thanks Jen for your help, putting and keeping weight on a picky eater is hard. Bt track life really does suit him and I think these pics show that too.

Remember we have a featured post with all our comparison pics and I've linked it below.

I did wonder if the mares would continue to use just 1 shelter or both.... I think these pics show they still use both really well despite them being apart and in different areas of the track.

Being a track pony Drifter hasn't been stabled very often. Over the last couple of weeks she had the odd night in to "practice" ready for her first big stay away show. She got to the Quest final at Arena UK. She was a superstar! It was the biggest atmosphere and longest journey she has done. Her test was tense which was to be expected. But we came away with a very respectable 10th place. Well done Drifter. Your super. Now she gets to chill out on her track and have a quiet winter.
Thanks to everyone who has helped to get us to this point. You all know who you are. I'm lucky to have a supportive large horsey family.

Now we have lovely fencing up on our track, I realised I forgot to bury an electric cable to get our middle electric fencing live.... So I had to spend yesterday digging up my lovely track by hand..... Some track jobs really make you cry. But it will be worth it to protect our nice new fencing.

The final part to a gathering/quarantine area on the mares track is our lovely shelter from this is our 2nd shelter from these guys as you all know the mares love their first one and as usual they couldn't wait to be in this one. It will be interesting to see how they split their time between the two shelters. Or do they all just use one shelter... Who knows?! Bt as you can see they love it as much as they do the first one.

Yep the mares love their hill.

Yep the mares love their hill.

We have added to the mares track. We have built a hill as ALL tracks need a hill. It gives us an additional surface (soil) for the horses and the horses love hills. Or they do in our flat part of Yorkshire. We also now have a purpose built quarantine area in the middle of the mare track. When it's not in use in can be a larger feeding gathering area for the mares and it allows us to quarantine horses all year round. We have made do with sectioning part of the gelding track but the only shelter was the hedge which in winter is lacking. It also makes the boys track much smaller. Hopefully this addition will make our life much easier and hopefully the horses will love it. Judging by this video they will do!!
This addition also makes the mares track circular now we started off with just a U. You might see we have left ourselves the ability to expand in future years..... So watch this space.

You might remember this post from Jan last year when Drifter helped Ian with his fencing on our track.
https://www.facebook.com/share/r/YHKLQ1KyuQGHpouQ/

Well this time round Ian had forgotten how helpful Drifter can be and asked if he could start his power tools near her, he was worried she would spook!!
Nah not Drifter. She would help if she could.

When I asked what you guys wanted to see more of you replied what equipment couldn't I live without.... Well my side kicks. It's rare for you to see me solo on the yard. These two keep me company most of the the time. Raz (black and tan) is older and doesn't like mornings anymore. But is always first inline for a hack and Bonita (tan and white) is well just Bonita. She is a rescue, thanks and we wouldn't be without either of them on the yard.

Before setting up our track I bought and read Jamie Jackson's Paddock Paradise book. It mentioned playing predator noises to help with movement. Here at Meaux we have actual predators (see the last pic).
But seriously the horses love looking out and watching deer, foxes, hares and lots of other wildlife that we have around us.

The hill is used for all sorts and Bertie loves rolling. They use the sandpit a lot for rolling. Bt obviously a down hill slope is best!!!
Where do Ur horses love rolling??!

Our farriers love coming to Meaux, Ben Machin Farriery and Chris. Usually I pretend that I'm holding the horses, bt I'm often too busy bombarding them with questions and watching (learning) what they are doing to do much effective holding.... Then there are days like today when I don't even pretend to be useful or holding the horses. Bertie is a good boy and enjoys his monthly pedicure.

Wispa gets done with Drifter and is coming along so we'll for a baby. I'm nearly at a stage when I can forget about holding her too. 😀

We always trim the horses on the track with their friends. Usually just out of reach of the other loose horses. Bt it makes for a much better experience for the horses than being tied up. Bertie used to be spooked by the farrier and hated being hot shod.... Bt Ben and Chris have always been understanding and he is great now.

I'm again trying to plant some mint near the track. For a plant which is hard to kill I'm finding it hard to keep it alive. Lol I used to be good at gardening. Bt now I work with horses I don't have time and seem to have lost my green finger 🤞 they will come back and this will survive winter.
Anyway ponies seem to enjoy it!

Bertie is horse number 2, who purposely avoids ALL the logs in the link below. Why after over a year is he now choosing to walk over the biggest log? The first time I saw this I thought I was seeing things. Bertie is well known as an energy concerver. So why the change? Track observations really do give me more questions than answers. Bt I love it. Hopefully the answer will come to me later or you guys will have some good thoughts.

The boys don't use there shelter very often. There is the occasional poo and after rain we find some bedding on the none rugged horses often. Bt it was great seeing Arthur use the shelter when it was raining. Below is a video of of Arthur rolling and being cross in the rain.... Not using the shelter.

We have moved our ring feeder which we love. to the mares track as we have more mares than geldings. Meaning now it's winter we can put out more higher calorie dry hay as the geldings are loosing weight really well and we don't want the weight loss to be too quick. We also don't want the round bale to spoil and it was taking 5 boys about 7 days to eat it.
As we did this move a few weeks ago I can tell you it takes the 6 mares 5 days to eat the same bale. We have more mares that need to loose a lot of weight so the bale feeder is better suited to that track. We also put out higher calorie hay on the mare track, but less until the weight is better on all the horses.

How lucky am I. Myself and Bertie qualified in April for the Combined Training Novice/80 section. This weekend We went to the final at and came 7th. Well done Bertie!!
We have taken Bertie back to basics this year and worked really hard trying to remove his tension. So suddenly going and doing a Novice test was a big step up for him. Also it was another stay away show and he seems to be taking these more in his stride, we at least entered this dressage arena in trot rather than canter which the judge appreciated and gave us an 8 for our entry. Throughout the day he was lovely and has matured in the last 12 months. Yes he is 14 bt as riders we never stop learning and changing our ways so why shouldn't our horses benefit from this growth, Bertie certainly has.
Track life has definitely improved Bertie over the last 3 years. His feet are constantly improving which means I can ask more and more from him and he is happy to give it. His gut is improving, this can be seen in his foot health, muscle development and over all tone and look. Yes we have a long way to go as he is fed lots of bucket feed. But this year he has been in so much more work and his food requirements have reduced which must mean his gut is healthier. He never displayed any gut issues except being a poor dooer and not being a huge fan of eating or forage. But these are definitely some of the beneficial side effects of track life.

A huge thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way and to my staff that keep the show on the road at home. You are all great.
