🐇Rabbits are active animals and need an environment with plenty of room to hop, binky, run, dig, stretch out and stand tall...

It is very important to provide your rabbit with ample space to stretch, run, lie down, and binky. Did you know that there are guidelines for minimum space requirements for housing rabbits, whether they live inside or out?

The RSPCA advises that rabbits need the below as a minimum space requirement for two average-sized rabbits. But, of course, if you can provide more space, that is even better for your rabbit’s welfare.

A hutch should be permanently attached to a larger run to ensure they can exercise freely, such as rabbit friendly room indoors or a larger secure run outdoors.

It’s recommended it is at least 2m long x 60cm wide x 60 cm tall to house two paired rabbits, which they have access to at all times, so they can move freely and explore as they would if they were wild rabbits.

Top tips:
🐰It is important to note that the space must be across a single level, so raised hutches within the space will not count towards the minimum space requirement.

🐰If you can provide free-range space, that is even better, but please ensure roaming is supervised.

🐰 Most importantly, the bigger the space, the more room they will have to exercise and keep in shape!

🐰 This week is Rabbit Awareness Week, and this year's theme is 'Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies', so today, we wanted to share a little more about the importance of a balanced diet.

Rabbits require a diet based on 80% grass or feeding hay, 15% greens, 5% good-quality pellets or nuggets (around one egg cup twice a day), and fresh water.

Feeding nuggets ensures your rabbit eats a balanced diet, as it won't have the option to 'selective feed' by picking its favourite parts out of a mixed diet.

Feeding the correct diet is probably the single most important way to ensure a healthy and long-lived rabbit. Here are six top tips for ensuring your rabbit has a balanced diet...

🐇💧 You should ensure that your rabbit always has access to fresh, clean drinking water.

🐇🌿 When providing food for your rabbit, fresh grass is the preferred choice, but when not available, hay is a good substitute that is available all year round and provides them with the nutrients they require.

🐇🌾Hay provides lots of long-strand fibre, keeping your rabbit's gut moving. It is also the closest thing to a natural diet. Rabbits would naturally graze all day in the wild, so please ensure your rabbit has an unlimited supply.

🐇 🥗 Complete rabbit food is also available, but it should not be used as a replacement for hay. Please use it as a nutritional supplement.

🐇🥦 Many plants can be safely enjoyed by rabbits, including broccoli, parsley, spring greens, and dandelions. They also love the leaves from an apple or hazel tree. When feeding them plants, you should keep the portion sizes to a minimum.

🐇🥕 Fruits should be counted as a treat for your rabbit as they are high in sugar. Your rabbit may enjoy a grape, slice of apple, slice of orange or carrots.

🥪🌞 Today marks National Picnic Day, signalling the impending arrival of summer and the embrace of outdoor activities with freshly made picnics.

Imagine the joy of your dog joining in the fun on this National Picnic Day. You can prepare a dog-friendly packed lunch to include with your picnic, as many human foods are toxic or can cause gastrointestinal problems for dogs.

Ensuring your pet's safety is paramount. We recommend packing regular treats or even a frozen treat for them to enjoy slowly. Remember, when you're out in the sun with your pet, always be safe, stay in the shade, and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

⚠️ Here are some hazards to be aware of...

Did you know? The hot summer months create an increase in toxic blue-green algae across the UK.

This may appear as green or greenish-brown scum or foam on the water surface and contains toxins harmful to animals. It is not actually an algae but an accumulation of cyanobacteria. Dogs often swallow it by drinking water from an affected lake, river, or pond or by licking their fur after swimming. If you think blue-green algae is present, do not let your dog near it.

Unfortunately, the toxins can cause severe liver damage and can ultimately be fatal. There are currently no known preventative medicines, and prompt veterinary treatment is essential to ensure any chance of recovery.

If you are concerned, please get in touch with us immediately.

😺 Don't chip away at your cat's safety!

In a week, it will become compulsory for all cats to have a microchip. Cats must be microchipped before they turn 20 weeks old, and their owner's contact information must be accurately maintained in a designated pet microchipping registry.

Owners who fail to comply with this regulation will have 21 days to implant a microchip, or they may be subjected to a fine of up to £500.

If your cat has not yet been microchipped, book an appointment today. Microchipping increases the likelihood of being reunited with your cat if it becomes lost and provides a permanent and reliable method of pet identification.

Happy National Bee Day! 🐝❤️

Let's create a buzz together by planting more flowers and supporting our local beekeepers.

Bees are essential for pollinating plants, including the fruits and vegetables we enjoy; by cultivating bee-friendly flowers in our gardens, we can offer sustenance and refuge to these vital pollinators.

Remember to be mindful of using pesticides in your garden, as they can be harmful to bees and other beneficial insects.

Do you have any bee-friendly plants in your local outdoor area or garden? We'd love to hear your favourites in the comments below.

🐱 🐶 Student Veterinary Nurse 🐶 🐱

As we continue on in , this weeks theme is for our student veterinary nurses.

We currently have a one SVN at our practice, Kate.

Kate joined the team in 2020, where she was initially an animal care assistant. Kate soon impressed everyone with her eagerness, skills and dedication to the job where she then climbed the ladder to go on to do her Registered Veterinary Nursing training.

Kate is in her final year currently, and is due to undertake her final exams in November, then her practical OSCE exams in March.

Once completed, Kate will be a fully fledged RVN. And what a fantastic one she will be.

Throughout her training, Kate must complete a last number of practical tasks where members of the team will supervise her undertaking these and sign off her competencies. At college, she also studies the anatomy and physiology of an array of species, husbandry, conditions and diseases of an array of species, nutrition, health and safety, radiography, anaesthesiology, pharmacology, genetics, breeding, professionalism, accountability, customer service, the list is endless! Where she will complete assignments and final exams.

Kate is pictured below, with Eric the XL bully, who was in for castration. As Eric is in a clinic area, which is not a public space, he is not required to wear his muzzle.

👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ Student Veterinary Nurses are working towards completing a qualification with a college or a university to become Registered Veterinary Nurses. While training, our students enrol in the RCVS and complete practical training.

Practical experience is a vital part of veterinary nurse training for our students. Our practice team supports them, providing supervision and guidance to assist them with developing their knowledge and clinical skills. This experience, alongside their qualification, prepares them to complete the roles that a Registered Veterinary Nurse undertakes.

When aspiring to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), you have two distinct paths to choose from. You can either pursue a vocational (diploma) route, which offers an on-the-job training option. You can also complete a higher education (degree) route, which provides you with the opportunity to experience university life whilst training. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

We encourage progression and growth and enjoy celebrating our Student Veterinary Nurses when they graduate and become a Registered Veterinary Nurse. 💚

🐱 🐶 Patient Care Assistant 🐶🐱

Following on from our , we would like to reintroduce our two PCAs, Lou and Jade.

Pictured below is Jade, who started working for us in 2020, where she had come from another busy practice!
Our PCAs are an integral part of our team that help assist our RVNs in their daily tasks, as well as the vets.

Jade has an interest Laboratory, and is currently undertaking a course in Laboratory Diagnostics, which will allow her to check multiple samples under the microscope and identify any abnormalities with the sample.
This will be a great help internally with the amount of samples taken such as urine, bloods, hair and many more!

ONE MONTH TO GO – DON'T DELAY AND BOOK TODAY!

As the deadline for microchipping cats over 20 weeks old fast approaches, it's important to understand the significance of this requirement, including:

😺 Microchipping is a safe and effective way to ensure your cat can be identified if they go missing or are stolen.

😺 The chip contains a unique number corresponding to your contact information, which can be accessed by a scanner at a vet's or an animal shelter.

😺 Failure to microchip your cat by the deadline could result in a fine or legal action, so it's important to act now if you haven't already done so.

If you haven't yet microchipped your cat, don't wait until the last minute. Contact us to schedule an appointment to ensure your feline friend complies with the upcoming law changes.

Our Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) can undertake a multitude of roles, providing crucial support and assistance to our veterinary nurses and vets.

We are passionate about supporting our PCAs in expanding their role as they form such an integral part of our veterinary nursing teams. PCAs can grow their skills through training, which can be done either in-house or through formal qualifications. They may also support their teams through mentoring and teaching or take on leadership responsibilities. This dynamic nature of the role keeps things interesting and engaging. 🦮🐈🐇🐁🐢🦎

Their unwavering dedication and compassion are not just qualities we value, but they also significantly contribute to the overall well-being of our patients and the smooth running of our practice. This impact is what makes this role truly rewarding. 💚

If you would like to work with animals, this could be a role for you to consider.

Adders are warming up... 🐍

☀️ With the weather warming up, it’s a timely moment to remind all dog owners to be aware of adders, the UK’s only native poisonous snake. Adders hibernate over the winter and emerge during the spring, putting dogs at increased risk during the summer months when the weather is generally warmer.

Adders only tend to bite in self-defence, for instance, when they are stepped on accidentally or disturbed by an inquisitive dog. However, when they do, bites can be dangerous as they can induce lameness, vomiting, and changes to the heartbeat, blood pressure, and breathing rate.

They are typically found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands, and woodland edges, although not limited to these environments.

Visually, bites typically result in dark-coloured swelling that can quickly become severe. If your dog has been bitten by an adder, please get in touch with us or your nearest vet immediately.

12/04/2024

As humans, we fret around the buzzing noise when a bee comes close; however, an inquisitive pet may seek to investigate and, as a result, could get stung. Pets seem to be fascinated by bees and wasps and can be stung when trying to play with them after rolling in the grass, rummaging in the garden or disturbing a nest.

Commonly, most stings will cause your pet some irritation and some pain, depending on where your pet has been stung and if they have been stung before. In some instances, there can be a lot of swelling, and they may continually scratch the stung area, which can result in fur loss. If your pet shows any of the following symptoms, they could have been stung:

🐝 Drooling
🐝 Whining
🐝 Swelling
🐝 Pawing at the face or mouth
🐝Biting at the site of the sting
🐝Holding up their paw (if that is where they have been stung)

If your pet has been stung near their mouth or nose, you should contact us immediately.

10/04/2024

Over the coming spring and summer months, the risk of "flystrike" increases among the rabbit population. Flystrike occurs when flies lay eggs on the rabbit, which hatch into maggots. These maggots then eat the rabbit's flesh, with often fatal results.

Due to rapid development, the best prevention is keeping your rabbit clean and in good health, feeding them an appropriate diet, carefully checking their bottoms at least twice daily and applying preventative treatments during the peak season.

Rabbits are at an increased risk of getting flystrike if they are unable to keep themselves clean due to obesity, arthritis, poor dental health or cramped, dirty living conditions.

Some of the typical signs of flystrike include:
🐰 Digging into a corner of their living area
🐰 A strong smell from their living area
🐰 Open sores or visible maggots on the skin
🐰 Lethargic and very quiet
🐰 Not eating or drinking

Please get in touch with us quickly for further help and advice if you have any suspicions.
