Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

⚠ Alabama Rot - confirmed case ⚠

Unfortunately we have seen a confirmed case of Alabama Rot, also known as CRGV, this time in the Cleobury Mortimer area. An additional case is suspected but not yet confirmed.

While there is no need for panic, we're advising dog owners to be vigilant and to contact their vet if their dog develops unexplained skin lesions, particularly on the legs or paws.

We don't yet know what causes CRGV and it remains a very rare disease. Most cases occur between November and May and there is some evidence of a link to walking in wet, muddy woodland areas. It may be beneficial to wash and dry your dog after a muddy walk. Current advice is that there is no need to avoid walking in certain areas.

Signs to look for:

▪️ Skin sores not caused by a known injury, particularly on the legs or paws
▪️ Swollen skin
▪️ Redness

Signs that may be seen if kidney problems develop:

▪️ Vomiting
▪️ Changes in behaviour such as fatigue or lack of appetite

Yes, yes, and yes! Working with animals comes with a HUGE amount of responsibility. It doesn’t matter if you’re a groomer, boarder, house sitter, walker, veterinary care assistant, veterinary nurse, veterinary receptionist, veterinary surgeon, cat sitter, hydrotherapist, physiotherapist, holistic therapist, I know I’ve not included everyone and please do not take that personally! As you are ALL so very very important to the health, welfare, and wellbeing of our pets.

Your job, whatever your role, plays a massive part in that pets life. It is not a hobby, it is not an easy option, it is a choice, a vocation, a calling to care for pets who are often the most important part of somebodies life! That means you have to do your best and be your best by learning as much as you can, and realising that you should never be undervalued.

In many people’s lives their pets are one of the most important, sometime the most important. Your work, your care, your dedication, is worth everything.

So the next time someone thinks your job is just cuddling animals, remember this post. Cuddling is lovely, but your job is so much more than that ❤️

Everyone Help needed. One of our lovely customers due to personal circumstances unfortunately has to rehome her fur baby. The owner has tried rescue centres but they are all full so if any of my wonderful customers, family or friends could give Tilly a new home please get in touch.
Below is a bit of info about Tilly.
Everyone meet Tilly, she is 12 years old. all her injections up to date.
She doesn't like dogs, and is scared of children.
She is a mix of indoor and outdoor cat, likes to be out in dry warmer weather. Inside in the cold and rain.
She likes to lay on a blanket on the sofa near you. She is extremely vocal, let's you know she's around, can be very loud sometimes. She would suit an older family that love cats. No children or dogs, but unsure of cats now as its been 6 year's.
